  • Phyllis and Mary are friends who sell flowers on Meath St. Here they talk about their love of the area and their strong beliefs on why The Liberties might be headed in the wrong direction.
    -----------
    A series of 12 crafted short films, each focuses on a different character within Dublins Liberties community. It has been described as the documentary film equivalent of a portrait gallery.

The Liberties captures the character and unique humour of the people who live there. The documentary celebrates ordinary lives well lived in The Liberties - Tailor Eugene Fagan sews in a button for an 80 year old customer as they chat; Meath Street butcher Declan Larkin carries quartered cattle into his shop at dawn; Flower Ladies, Phyllis Kavanagh and Mary Hand judge passers by on Meath St; Theyre not going to buy flowers, Theyre not going to buy flowers. Brenda Fricker polishes her Oscar at home, just off the Coombe and recounts the comment from friends; What are you doing living up there, Brenda, Youll be murdered, Youll be killed.

The film was shot, produced and directed by Shane Hogan and Tom Burke and edited by Tom Burke. Original music composition was by Gerry Horan. Audio post-production was by Kevin Breathnach at Avondale Studios. Titles were designed & produced by Lorcan Finnegan and Brunella Cocchiglia at Lovely Productions. The series of films was originally funded by the Arts Council under the Once-Off Project Award in 2008.

    I was born in the liberties. Now live in the USA . I was born on Meath street and went back in 2011 and found the flat where I was as a baby. The locals were just like theses ladies and helped me find where I was as a baby.

      Me too. I was born where the Liberty market is back in '61. It burned down in I think it was '64 and I was rescued by a local man. I think it was Mikey Sweeney. I am now living in the US for the last 10 yrs, and how I miss home.

    The Liberties is on its last legs as far as Meath Street is concerned. I saw it happen to a market I worked in back in South London. Today it's gone, just the way of the world, the council did most of the damage to be honest, and slowly killed off what was left. It's a shame really as Meath Street reminds me of the place I come from and I can see it happening in Dublin.

    These are genuine nice women just a bit ignorant.If they talked to Africans or Asians they would see they are sound.

    • @Fatfrogsrock
      @Fatfrogsrock 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      They have genuine grievances though. I grew up in e london in the early 90s and it was similar to what Dublin is now, multicultural but still for the most part felt like a European city. I went back a few months ago and parts of it literally feel like Pakistan now, no cockneys like there used to be. I felt out of place being white. Blindly saying that Africans and Asians are sound and we just need to get to know them better isn't going to be much consolation when the culture you love is being replaced rapidly, even if most Africans and Asians are sound. These people are a dying breed and are being replaced on purpose by politicians with an anti nationalism and pro multiculturalism ideology. Very sad.
