Hope you get up to 4000 subscribers for your birthday 👍. Many of us collect patterns and save them until a particular fabric inspires, so don’t toss or pass them on, wait for the perfect fabric.
Knowing and keeping track of your personal daily clothing choices can help you decide what to make but it doesn’t hurt to have a party/nice dinner dress all made and ready in the closet for an unexpected event, so, my suggestion would be go get some fabric that feels nice to your skin and in a color you love and create it for a special day/evening. That’s better than rushing to get an outfit for an emergency event! Then wearing it not quite finished or having an all night sewing marathon...been there, done that...LOL

Hi Tamlyn, I made the Betty dress but for my Niece and she looked fabulous in it and I was so proud as it was the first dress that I have ever made. I think you would look great in all of your pattern choices so I would say go for it and make them all... it's all good for sewing experience and if you don't like them you could pass them on for some other lucky person 😉😁👌💖😘

Life is too short to over think making a pattern. Make all of them and enjoy every moment. I think you would look great!

Good luck on 4000 subscribers- you really deserve it! As to the Nico it does look clingy in that white jersey and if you don’t have the body confidence no matter what anyone says, you will be uncomfortable in it and probably never wear it. However, rather than a jersey, what about a thickish scuba. That would have much more structure and not cling, more like a body con type dress. I love the Magnolia, I can see you in a black or red velvet version - get Sam to book something glorious, make it and flaunt it! ❤️

I would make the Magnolia dress in a fabric that makes it a little more casual. The long sleeved version would be great with thick tights and boots! You could shorten the skirt a bit. It would look great in a cosy knit fabric or a needlecord. Also, if you love something then wear it - don't wait for an occasion.....the occasion is now :-)

The Betty dress would totally suit you but you could make it in an edgier fabric and style it up with a leather jacket and boots!? And perhaps a belt with it, making it a bit more biker chic. I love the magnolia too. I think we should all make what we want and rock up the the cinema in them lol. Seriously though, you should make it and then at least when an event does pop up you'll have it in your wardrobe as a choice xx

Great video. You’d look fab in the Nico, but a dark colour, or patterned to detract from any body concerns. The special occasion dress would be perfect for the Sew North Soirée. The Sorrel would really suit you. Let’s hope your partner in the swapsharesew challenge chooses it 🤞🏻😊

Tamlyn I have just started watching and have had to pause your video to say this. Today I saw your mam’s Instagram post where she is wearing the pink pinafore dress, she says you persuaded her to try a different style. She was adventurous and responded to your request. I think you should be equally adventurous and try the Betty dress 🤪

I use OneNote for my pattern requirements. Every time I buy I new pattern I add a tab for it with fabric recommendations, notions needed and how much fabric is needed for my size. It means when I'm out in a shop or even just sitting on sofa shopping online, I have all the info I need on my phone to buy what I need when I see fabric I like. X

I was honestly so scared about making jeans, I'd only been dressmaking about 10 months but I had a little hand holding at a course and it was honestly fine. The basted fitting is your friend for sure!

Make the magnolia for that dressy up function you go to with the other sewists. Then make a short one for spring next year. Keep the betty it makes a lovely special occasion dress and a girl never knows when one will turn up. What's wrong with a beautiful dress in your wardrobe? Imagine the pride each time you see it. You don't make something special and then last minute something comes up and there is nothing to wear then you get a mad dash to make something you don't love. I don't go to funerals regularly but I have a dress in case... Also, you have a fantastic shape. Funny you acknowledge that most women feel conscious about their bump which means you know the bump life is real. Make the dress if you don't like it you won't die you just won't wear it but if you do like it imagine the possibilities of styling it up fun you get to have. Love from Barbados hun... #sewingfun :)

You should make the long white dress. You're young and now is the time! If not now, then when? You can always wear a good stretchy tummy tamer underneath to smooth you out!

Go try on ready to wear dresses in the similar style as Betty and Nico. I have a heavier, bumpier, post baby body that I'm not comfortable flaunting. But I feel fine in a merino jersey column dress. The Nico would also look great with a long open top, to distract and lengthen.

Love the short magnolia. Depending on the fabric I wud definitely wear it to church and out to dinner. The long white like someone else said there is plenty of nice shape wear out there. Go for it!

I have the Betty and th fabric i would probably use, but like you, I'm not sure if it's the style for me. I need to make a muslin and see how I feel then. I have made 2 Magnolia's - one short and one long, both with the long sleeves. I LOVE them. I have another one in my plans. It's a fabulous dress. The shorter version is great with boots and tights day to day. Make it :)

The Sorrel has you written all over it, it’s lovely. I think the top half of the Betty is really nice with the v back detail but I’m not a full circle kinda girl. Boyfriend jeans a WIN. Self Assembly Required recently made a beautiful Magnolia; your Fumeterre was gorgeous; maybe save it for an occasion

I like the dresses, not the long one shown in white so much. The jeans I personally don't care for, just me. The other dresses seem retro. I like them. I don't have those patterns over here, we have Simplicity, McCall's and Butterick and some others. I never pay full price for patterns. I wait for a sale at $1.99 and buy then. Up until a few short years ago they would have them for a dollar each and I would just stock up. I have lots of patterns. The retro looking patterns look like something I would have worn in the 1950's. I probably have patterns similar, but of course do not fit. I am now 85 years old. Thank you for your video.

I think they're all lovely patterns, I got a free Betty dress as part of international womens day but haven't made it as yet but will do one day. What do you mean no special occasions coming up - a birthday & then Christmas! The shorter version of the Magnolia would be stunning on you in a deep red double crepe for either occasion, you can have occasion wear. Jeans aren't as tough as you think. one step at a time but a good idea to save them for a fit workshop. The Nico will be a super basic turtle neck as a top, it would go with loads of separates, that way you can gauge what fabric type & colour works with it. Look forward to seeing what you make.

I have the Betty dress for well over a year and not found any excitement to make it, I don't know why but I think it would suit you. I have loads of patterns that I've not touched and just ordered more in the simplicity and vogue sale- whoops!! Your makes always look amazing so I'm sure whatever you make will be great.

I made the betty dress before but for some random reason the bodice fit so badly! Even though I usually fit the sew over it size 8 so easily with minimal adjustments. So weird!

  • @Chelbyuk

I have the Betty dress.... And it's still sitting there. I'm a bit nervous of it as I've read that the sizing can be a bit out. The only other SOI I've made is the silk cami pattern and the bust was an awful for on me☹️
The Sorrel - I also participated in the Kickstarter for this dress and I've now made 3 versions. It's turned out to be my favourite dress and one of my top 3 patterns for the YEAR! it's actually a straight forward (easy?) and quick pattern to make imho.
Niko - I'm completely the same here, looks lovely - on others, in too lumpy to risk this dress. You need to feel good/comfortable in your outfit or it will just sit in the wardrobe..... 🤔 I agree with the comment above - why not make the top version?
Jeans, when you've made them you'll be SO proud (rightly) of yourself 😉☺️
As for the Magnolia, as others have said EVERYONE needs a beautiful dress in their wardrobe "just in case" if it's one you love you'll end up either MAKING occasions to wear it or you'll just want to wear it all the time anyway 😉 x

These are all great patterns! I have the same dilemma with the Betty, although I got it for free so I don't feel like I have to make it. It might be too costume-y for me so I will keep the PDF file in case I ever need it for a costume party. The Sorrel is such a basic everyday shirt dress and I notice it online when people post it. It looks great on various figures and unique when made in different fabrics. The Morgan jeans are perfect for a sewing weekend with assistance: that will give you a jump start. I think you would look fab in the Nikko dress but start with the top (or a darker heavier fabric) if you aren't sure. Maxi dresses are in style now so you needn't save the Magnolia for a dressy occasion: fabric choice is key, a cotton lawn or viscose would keep it wearable every day. Good luck! I look forward to seeing what you make.

Make the Niko. If you're really self-concious make it in a dark ribbed jersey, charcoal, black or navy. But EVERYBODY has a little bit of belly. and in winter you mightn't even have that much because tights.
I also have TONS of patterns I haven't sewn yet, I also have the boyfriend jeans (the plan was to take a trouser-making workshop and THEN to tackle jeans, but alas...), the magnolia (it's printed, I even bought the fabric to make a short version with long sleeves and non-revealing neckline) but decided to rather make a fibremood mira with tiers, as I find it more wearable in my everyday life. And I have the Betty dress. Every time I look at the line drawings I'm thinking of a summer wedding. so yes, you should make one. next spring. in a beautiful fabric. and go to a wedding or a picnic or to the races. or just to go to the supermarket. Be bold!

Haven't made Nico but made teamwork neenah which is similar. My solution was to make it in an embossed ponte so it's not quite so closely fitted and I love it! The magnolia is the pattern I keep dreaming of but haven't bought for the same reasons as you. A big sewy event could be your prompt and then style it afterwards with boots ??

I can subscribe every comment you gave especially to the dresses. But you must go for the Jean's. Once you begin you'll see it's not that stressful!

  • @mizzworthy
    @mizzworthy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I think you should make all of the patterns! The Betty looks like a great style to wear for any occasion and you could make it more casual or a bit different by using a really unexpected fabric... maybe an Alexander Henry Frida Khalo fabric or something. The sorrel is awesome and will really really look good on you. The Niko dress looks intimidating because its styled in white on a very slim model. You might feel more comfortable making it in a darker or patterned fabric. Maybe make the top first and see how you feel in it? The Jean's are a definite yes but I get the fear and would definitely take them to the workshop and get fitting help. You'll feel so confident making a really well fitting Jean! The dere and doe dress is beautiful and I personally will happily wear a maci dress for most things... you can make it more every day if you want by getting rid of the split and doing the higher bodice... it's too nice not to make and wear! Dress it down with boots and a cardio or denim jacket. Life is too short not to wear beautiful things you've made!

  • @doreenchambers5817

    Make them all!
I dont have anywhere to go either but I have made a full length Magnoiia, admittedly just out of cotton lawn (from Abakhan), and I wear it to feel comfy in the evening - think a smelly candle and your glass of wine!
The Betty would make a fantastic Christmas dress for Christmas day/ staff party/etc. You would look great in it in a navy or black, solid or with just a print of sparkle/stars. If you use a soft fabric then underline the bodice pieces .
Make the Nikko as a top first.
Wear what you want and will make you happy!!

The Nikko would bring me out in a cold sweat (too much belly) but I bet you would look lovely. Perhaps try it as a toile in a cheaper fabric first.

The Magnolia is a lovely pattern, I made it for my Dressmaker's Ball dress this year, but if you make it in a floral or more informal viscose then it would make a great summer maxi. The short version with long sleeves would also work with tights in the daytime depending on the print :) I also have a ton of patterns that I love but haven't made yet, need to try and get some sewn up instead of making the same things!

The Betty Dress looks like a lot of work and fabric. If you're not sure it's you style, there's a great chance you won't wear it.
The Nikko could be made in a scuba that wouldn't show off every bump and lump and/or line it with mesh which also smooths out lumps & bumps?

  • @marilynbook4211
    @marilynbook4211 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Go for the Jeans, they are not as hard as you would think. Your number 1 would only be dressy if you made it out of dressy fabric. You could make it out of something casual looking and wear it often. I have the same problem as you when it comes to wearing jersey or clingy fabric, does not work well with my bumps but there are undergarments that could smooth you out, have you tried them? I am too bumpy for the undergarments LOL.

Marilyn Book I just saw a Mimi G tutorial where she talked about lining with power mesh. Specifically in a knit pencil skirt, but she showed other very close fitting garments. She says it is more comfortable than spans or others. I am going to try it.

I think the Nikki could make a great top for under jumpers or jackets, no need to make the dress if you’re not comfortable with it. And the last dress, the dressiness would all have to do with the fabric you made it in. A fun jersey print, voila it’s a work outfit.

All those patterns would look great on you if you worried about the body fit an the white dress. There are several things you can do 1. Use a fabric that won’t Kling to your body as much , or when you cutting out the dress give yourself a little extra size in that area. It will still be the same dress as is on the front of the pattern it will just fit you better.

  • @catreid1019

Make the Magnolia! Make it in some lovely fabric like black velvet or something you can wear over and over for multiple occasions dressed up and down or just go for it and make it in some boho fabric and just wear it whenever you like - maxi dresses are still in aren’t they (they are in the US)? I’ m sure you’d look fine in the Nikki - just get some Spanx if you’re feeling a bit overexposed. You’re only young once, don’t waste your time worrying about that stuff, in 30 years you’ll be kicking yourself. Ask me how I know :)

Wow all appear to be body conscious issues. Including the jeans that have to fit with non stretch denim. You can dk this. Take your measurements accurately allow the ease you are comfortable with and go for it. Do wearable muslins. Worst case you hate them and then donate. You can still pass on the patterns.
