    I always though keeping birds was cruel. I consider a 55 gallon the minimum size for all but a few fish. When I had my 625 gallon tank people kept commenting how much room they had to swim around. Yes that is the point of having fish.

      Most pet birds are captive bred. ... My biggest complaint is that far too many people get large parrots that are highly intelligent, temperamental and demanding. These birds rarely get the attention they need, and really suffer for it.

      @@jonleiend1381 - If we're talking about parrots, you're supposed to let them out of their cage every day so they can interact with their keeper. ... If we're talking about something like a Zebra Finch, they need a proportionally larger cage, since they're more active, like to live in groups and don't like to be handled.

      Of course it's also possible to keep large parrots in pairs or groups if you have room for an aviary. However, birds that have been hand raised and kept as pets their whole lives don't always know how to be birds.

    • @veledwin1
      @veledwin1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Why consider keeping birds cruel? Just like you can provide tons of enrichment and space for your fish, people can do the same and keep parrots very well. Pigeons do really well in captivity as well

    We have Minnows (both store bought and Creek) in with Hannibal (Our very large Piranha), and Gold fish in with Goodman (Red Oscar), both treat they (so called feeders) as tank mates. lol They love Cut shrimp and Tilapia. Still can not break the Arowana from Feeder Minnows. He is now about 15" and was raised on them before we got him. I figure sooner or later he will be in the bigger tank and maybe he will learn from the other fish (or win the battle and get feeders still).
    I agree with this info 100%. We do have some Monsters growing out now. We still need to build the big tank. It will be done by the end of the year and they will look like babies in it. I think one thing you missed was "OK so you took the time to find and buy a monster tank (that is relative to the person) and now you have your still small "Monster Fish", you need to fight the urge to fill the tank with a bunch of "Future Monsters". We will be building a 4,000 gallon here that will house 1 Tiger Shovel nose catfish, 3 Channel Catfish, and 3 or 4 Bluegills. 2 Common Pleco 14" and 18". Sadly the bass went Nuts and started killing the other bass and he had to be rehomed to a large Private pond. The biggest of the fish are all at that 18-20" range. In the 135 gallon they are in now, they are not overly active and most Hide out except the smallest catfish, the TSC, and the Plecos. So when they land in a 4K they will likely do the same thing since we will give them places to hide (that will be designed for their full size potential) and as other fish get to big for their breeding tanks they will go to the 135 (grow out) until they can live with the big fish (Fishy retirement home). I guess in short I am saying what you are saying. Remember when planning ahead, actually plan ahead. Understand you think a 140 gallon tank is huge, and it is for the average person but it s not near enough for many fish and sure as Hell not enough for a few monsters.
    If you have found yourself in this position and truly can not keep your monster because he has outgrown your resources Ohio Fish Rescue is always willing to take fish in as well as many people with truly big tanks. By all means make sure the guy taking your monster has the means to make his next home his forever home. We were given Kat Man Do (The tiger shovel nose) because the person that had him knew we already have the glass for the big tank, she knew the plans were for the end of the year, and we had a 135g to keep him in until the big tank is done. he has grown in under 4 months from a skinny 12" to a thick 18"+ fish.

    Speaking as someone who is very anti wild caught fish, (without an extremely good reason) I am very grateful that you made it number 1 on your list. 😀 I am massively into conservation and I'm very lucky to have in the past travelled to Australia & North Africa to experience what it's like to observe some of these fish in the natural habitat and consequently, I get very protective of it.

    If decorations like plants, rocks, air stones, internal filters, driftwood, etc. will be torn up and moved all around the tank, could these items be considered toys or enrichment for these monster fish?

    • @janicetan3874
      @janicetan3874 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes it could! My main issue is not just how the tanks look, but what the fish stand to gain or lose from how we decorate our tanks. A lot of people don't even think about enrichment for their fishes so it's great that you do! For my flowerhorn and oscar I put coral chips (you can use pebbles or marbles or anything, as long as they can't swallow it and it's aquarium safe) and that'll at least give them something to rearrange into a "nest". I give them all coconut huts (half a coconut with two semi circle holes cut into the sides) too and when they get too big to use them as hides they'll figure out what they want to use it for on their own.
      My flowerhorn turned his upside down so that he can still go there to sleep in something like a bed. You can also try clicker training to interact with them more in a fun way and mentally stimulate them too!!

    That bit about buying the fish before you have the means to house the fish properly is no joke. I d8d very little research on Silver Arowanas. I think I googled it and the first article I saw that said the can get as long as 24" is what I wanted to hear and I bought one. Like you, he started at about 3 inches in a 29g tank and quickly outgrew it so that he had to be moved to a 55. I was trying to grow her out enough so she to go into my 210 which housed two established and fully grown oscars that I'm certain would have made a meal of her. Then, one day out of the blue, the oscars decided they didn't like living under my dictatorship and tried to move out (they didn't get far). That forced me to start over and the scenario reversed itself. Now the aro was too big and is waiting for the new 210 residents to get big enough that she wouldn't/couldn't eat them. Ooftah, what a mess. She's still waiting, because some of the smaller species I chose aren't growing as fast as I would have hoped.
    People, don't be a schmuck like me. Do your research and have the aquarium the fish will need long term in place prior to buying the fish.

I have been keeping 2 silver arowanas and 1 albino arowana, 1 albino giant Gourami, 1 albino pacu and a jaguar cichlid in a 100 gallon tank and they grew too fast. i fed them feeder fishes then now for only once every week and then, every time i got home from work my filtration is all ways off. they keep on swimming through the pipe and smackin them off.. I just love watching them hunt.. every thing you said in your content made me realize i now need to fund a much more bigger tank.. Thank you very much !! ( Currently selling assets) HAHHAHHAHAHAHA

    Word and reasoning is not viewed as it should be these days, I think the best way to approach this problem is money. I mean for example, cost of tank, cost of heater and filtration, cost of feeding the animal. The work involved in keeping tank clean and fish healthy. then there is the cost of breakables be it tanks or heating. You said a lot of great stuff, but i feel you missed on some things. I say hit these crazy people where it will count. There money in there pockets. Big fish cost way more than one think, It why the shops sell them. They know you will be back, again and again. Im a keeper of peacocks, I know my limit. Great video sir, but crazy's have no ears.

      Money should never be the only standard/focus. The cheapest way to keep an animal will almost always be one of the least ethical as well. Without sympathy for the animal itself people wont care much about keeping it healthy and happy, and unless the animal itself was really expensive, probably not even about getting it to live most of its lifespan. But of course people need to consider money as an important factor, whether they can actually afford to care for it properly or not

    I took my 5” Yellow Rock Kribensis($48 fish) to my local ma & pa store and all I got was 2 $5 balls of Java Moss for my shrimp tanks! I had to get rid of him because he was very aggressive towards my Peacocks/Haps in my African Cichlid tank...

    I suspect a lot of monster fish are raised as food on overseas fish farms. It would explain the regular availability of babies at low prices.

    I kept a largemouth bass that I caught in the wild and he was awesome but destroyed anything I put in the tank. I ended up releasing him back to the wild at 14 in. I hope he lived a happy life.

    wow, that was a fantastic video. The last point, it brings up a whole ethical debate in this hobby that just doesn't have a clear answer. On one hand they have a much higher chance of surviving and having an enjoyable life in your care but they are confined. Personally I think it is the right thing (for captive-bred, that's really all I get) because we have the chance to give them enjoyment not available in the wild

    Hello John, do you or anyone else have a full proof way to wean a jardini aro off of goldfish? I have aro sticks, but it just spits them out. I’ve been putting sticks into the goldfish’s mouth prior to feeding, and he loves that, but he still doesn’t eat em alone. If starving, how long do I have to wait? Don’t want to stress him out. He’s about 7” long at the moment.

    • @oceanbliss1923
      @oceanbliss1923 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When he's hungry, He will eat, just don't feed him, offer him the sticks, if he doesn't want it, take it away with a net, when he gets hungry enough, he will eat, it's the same thing with kids and dogs & cats, they won't starve themselves. If you're concerned, you can try frozen food, like blood worms, you can get jumbo blood worms, or jumbo frozen shrimp. Lastly, try garlic, fish love garlic and there is a product Seachem Garlic Guard which not only makes the food more tasty (soak the food in the garlic guard) but also helps prevent illness.

    So I should buy the "wild caught" monster fish from the pet store, fly to south america and set them free?

    • @oceanbliss1923
      @oceanbliss1923 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *Insert eye roll here* He shared an opinion about wild caught monster fish, most aren't wild caught, some are, ok fine, but it 1) costs a lot more to import wild fish from other countries 2) Isn't practical time wise, pet stores buy fish from most fish farms situated in north America, fish that are imported are once again, from fish farms
