The Kinabatangan river is one of the best and most easily accessible places to see wildlife in Asia! The population density of animals on this stretch of the Kinabatangan river is second to none, including so much of Sabah's most sought after wildlife: Orang-utans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, langurs, wild cats, crocodiles, amazing birdlife and much much more! We recommend you take a 3 day 2 night Kinabatangan river trip as this will give you the best chances of seeing as much wildlife as possible. Over the course of 3 days you will be surrounded by nature, join sunrise & sunset river cruises, trek through the jungle and also get the chance to experience the jungle at night, on night walks. Experienced, eagle-eyed nature guides will be with you throughout to help you spot the critters you may otherwise miss! With varied trip options and accommodation ranging from dorms and private A/C rooms to private villas, our Kinabatangan river trips can accommodate just about all budgets and comfort levels.
DAY 1
Your day will start with pick up Sandakan hotels, Sandakan airport or Sepilok area between 12pm and 1pm. Make sure to have something to eat before pick up or bring some snacks for the journey as the estimated transfer time to the Kinabatangan River is 2 to 2.5 hours. Upon arrival, check-into your room and enjoy tea, coffee and snacks at our restaurant overlooking the river before embarking on your first river cruise at 4pm. Over the next 2 hours, your guide will be on the lookout for proboscis monkeys, long-tail & pig-tail macaques, silver leaf monkeys, orang-utans, crocodiles, birds and more! After your river cruise, return to the lodge for dinner before joining your guide on an included night walk .

DAY 2
As day dawns, join your second river cruise and watch as the river comes to life. Keep an eye out for bird life including Borneo’s endemic hornbills and have another chance to spot multiple species of primates. Return to the lodge for breakfast then join your guide for a jungle walk looking for signs of orang-utans such as nests in the trees or even orang-utans themselves if you are lucky! Enjoy lunch overlooking the river and a chance to rest before joining your afternoon river cruise. This cruise will focus on searching for pygmy elephants and may depart a little earlier if we need to travel further up or down river, there will also be plenty of other wildlife spotting opportunities along the way. After dinner, join your guide for a night walk or add-on a night cruise in search of nocturnal wildlife along the river bank.
DAY 3
Wake up early and join your guide for a final dawn river cruise or opt to join an early morning walk to watch the sunrise over the river from our wildlife observation tower (max 10 pax per day). Return to the lodge for breakfast then catch your transfer back to Sandakan / Sepilok. Drop off time at Sandakan airport and hotels in Sepilok and Sandakan is between 11 - 11.30am Meals - B

* The sunrise observation tower trip is at no additional charge but will be in lieu of your early morning river cruise, please book at reception at least 1 day before. Due to limited space at the tower, a maximum of 10 spaces are available each morning.
​Transfers to other overland destinations such as Lahad Datu, Semporna or Tawau are available on request and subject to additional charges.
