No, that would be horrendous for the environment! If they did this, millions of flights would go out 75%-85% full! This is a huge waste of resources and fuel and would make the airlines require more planes and flights.
I volunteered for a bump on an overbooked flight. Got $500 future airfare, hotel night and the extra day at the vacay site. The $500 flights were then used for a Vegas trip :-D. They were asking for volunteers, given the bad videos of the passenger being removed from his seat. The lady next to me was desperate to get to a wedding. Sadly she did not get my seat.....

Empty seats are not lost if they are paid for and the lighter load mean that they save fuel. As such, there are no excuses for overbooking short of technical problems with the aircraft.
First time I hear about it. Usually you get your seat when you check-in online and that is it. I am talking about Europe here, I'm guessing this only happens in the US? If not, I will have to be more careful in the future 😊
Once I was flying from India to Middle East it was peak time. My name was called out I went to the crew and they gave me a business class upgrade as I was a frequent flyer with them I was so happy
It's better to do web check-in 24 hrs prior to the flight schedule so that in case the check-in counter closes when you arrived, they would still accommodate you to fly on your scheduled flight and there will be no hassle on your part. 😀
Once there was a time I was flying back home and a flight was overbooked, there were no more flights that day so we got 1,000 $ and got a free hotel room with three beds , a free restaurant to eat at , and another day of vacation!
One time my flight was overbooked, so they compensated me by refunding my $750 ticket, putting me in a decent hotel with free food, taxi ride paid for and booked me a ticket for the next morning. I couldn't have been happier! XD
I never got in an overbooked situation. Sitting in airport waiting for hours is one of my biggest fear. But luckily it never happened and I wish it won't either
actually it happened to me 2 weeks ago when i boarded a flight from bucharest to london , a lady had the same place as mine, so i asked the flight attendants about that, and they let me stay at extra-leg chairs for no extra fee, i must mention that i had a basic ticket with only 20 euros , besides i was lucky that only half of the plane was full.... p.s. this is also the first flight in my life
I had to face same problem in Norwegian airlines last month. My ticket was from Gatwick to Copenhagen. I had to go thru next flight after 1.5 hours. I had to reimburse thru complete security system of Gatwick to get the next ticket. It was really pathetic and singlemost incident happened in my life. This this really hectic to face such situation. However, if you can judge the season and day and time right way, chance is very less to get stuck on overbooking situation anywhere. Good luck folks!!!
Phillips wrote a whole chapter about overbooking in his book about pricing and revenue management. For those who are interested, there you can learn more about the theory behind overbooking and why airlines do this to maximize revenue. Nice video!
My whole family was involuntary bumped (5) on a DC flight to Germany, when we were military. The airline gave us $500 per person and provided transportation to BWI for a different flight that was headed to the same location in Germany. It was inconvenient as heck. We had gone to a funeral for a family member and were trying to get back to work. I’m sure we weren’t happy
Yeah just happened to me when we were going from Dubai to India in Emirates plan. The plane was overbooked therefore they booked a ticket for us and one day stay in Le meridian hotel .They even gave a free ticket round trip which was valid till one year

Hotels do this too. The last people that try to check in on an oversold night get a free night...at another hotel. I never knew this till I started working for IHG.
24 hours before your flight you can go online and get a boarding pass. This guarantees your seat unless you show up after boarding has closed. Get to the airport early to allow for traffic problems and getting through security. I recommend at least 2 hours before.
Also, I recommend getting dropped off by family, friend, or taxi/shuttle service instead of having to park your car. Then you don't have to worry about finding your way back to your car upon return or fear your car is damaged or stolen. And don't have to pay the parking fare.
One time, I was visiting my sister in Boston and my plane from San Francisco to Minneapolis then Minneapolis to Boston. My first from hometown in San Francisco was delayed by the weather and my connecting flight I was not going to make it so the flightlady saw my flight plan told me "You ant going to make it, but don't worry I will put you on the next connecting flight for Boston and want to check your bag for free?" I replied "Thank you. Yes, I would like to check my bag. Thank you."
I was bumped before I could do the online check in 24 hours prior to departure. I had no options, but was compensated with cash, meal, hotel and phone call card. So it’s not always the last person to check in.

I worked for a major airline. They don’t have to put you on the next flight. They won’t take a buying passenger off to make room for you. If there is a open seat you will get on. Also once you het compensation for your first flight you can’t get it again if you can’t get it again for later flights.
To this day I get stressed out flying and always arrive early when I was a preteen my dad and I were traveling and we arrived just on time and he got seated and I got bumped.
