One of the few artists or bands brave and talented enough to write about self-harm, as well as eating disorders, alcoholism, mental disorders, and more. This band and Shirley have done so much and I'm so grateful. To everyone else who was part of this too. It's not easy when there's such stigma, especially in the past when it was worse.

Everyone in that time refused to talk about everything Shirley sing in this music, things like self-harm, alcoholism, mental disorders, etc., and threatened the people that suffer with this things like they're weird or monsters, which made them suffer even more and most of them lost their life because of it. You know nothing, kid.
Victims of self-violence and outsiders on the fringes of mainstream society needs a uniting voice like this to set them free, imploring all to "try to comprehend what you'd never". There are many great artists out there with corny lyrics, but Shirley is both poet and philosopher.
For sure, I'm in a major "crisis", the 3rd of my life, BPD which I usually manage pretty well having a good mindfullness but when I'm close to getting outta control, all I need is hearing her voice, playing the band songs all day long, especialy "I Think I'm paranoïd", as if the lyrics were written by myself, or for me.

I find it more universal than that. For me, the lyric "come on baby do you bleed like me?" recalls the merchant of venice- "if you prick me, do I not bleed?" This is a call for every human to recognize ourselves in each other- we ALL bleed like me. She paints pictures of specific people and pain, and I'm glad for people who feel particularly seen in those pictures. I hope some people have felt profoundly helped by this song. Just wanted to put in my two cents for why this song touched me as a non-fringe person.
Interesting. I find some of the lyrics quite dated. I figured, it's 1980s material, so that can be forgiven, but a re-release now, as is, seems a little problematic.

Everyone has their own struggle and for example the transgender theme is really a current one right now. it might not be put totally safe-space-speak, but that is what makes lyrics good. me as someone having problems with eating disorder while I listened to this song in the past and cutting myself and now having a close friend changing gender don't feel like these lyrics are offensive for anyone.

Sorry, I don’t know you, but I think I know enough, from my experience from abuse on the part of some very horrible nurses and doctors, including my parents, they need to screen shrinks and mental health workers a bit more carefully…. A lot of you are complete monsters! You know, I took a lot of shit from women and men just because 😼 I’m cool…It’ll never be forgiven. You are in a position of power, much like the police 👮♀️ who you work very closely with, and it-the power you think is yours, is all too often abused. Don’t look to me for sympathy 💐. Too many of you, doctors, nurses, my family, little Snitch girls 👧 crossed me way too much to ever forgive any of you- and you all seemed to get a lot of pleasure out of it too. I've had an eating disorder for 16 years and I'm finally getting help for the first time. At a really healthy mental place for the first time. This song hits deep. I felt like it was speaking directly to me when it came out. So surreal to reflect now.
Reminds me of those story-like Lou Reed songs like "Walk on the Wild Side" and especially "Chelsea Girls." Garbage KNOWS rock history and pays homage to the greats.
wallstreetfox3 It's not my favorite Garbage album, but it is good. It remains me of the good parts of Beautiful Garbage. Very moody and atmospheric. Almost like a movie soundtrack. I would say that the best tracks on the album are "Empty", "Night Drive Loneliness", and "We never tell". "Sometimes" has grown a lot on me too.
When I was a teen and Garbage came out, I liked them...now that I have had a chance to experience the ups and downs of life, they have become a band I've fallen in love with. One of the most brilliant and artistic set of humans to grace the airwaves.

Garbage is a PHENOMENAL band, and I'm amazed that this tune does not have a higher play count. Each vignette in the story of characters with (Avalanche's eating disorder; Chris's gender-identity; Doodle's borderline personality; Sweetie's narcissism/hystrionic?; J.T.'s alcoholism) speaks to life's pain and struggles, but with such an amazing delivery of musical perfection. A very dark and strong message. People who struggle with depression need help and never be ignored. I was depressed for a long time and feeling alone is extremely painful. I've been depressed for almost 21 years because my sister who was older than me and protected me changed into someone I don't know. I miss her terribly everyday feeling like she is dead.
You should see my scars. Thank you for making this song. It helps thinking others deal with the same problems... problems that others can't comprehend. On a lighter note, she looks great in a nurse outfit.

Appropriately enough, before I heard the lyrics about Avalanche I was thinking that I feel so fat looking at her and maybe not eating anymore would do the trick. It worked before. The comments are several years old, so here's a new one - Shirley Manson is the sexiest, classiest singer of all time and the whole band is/was DYNAMITE. By the way, I'm almost 78 and I've heard a lot of good bands in my time. Garbage is my all time favourite.

Appropriately enough, before I heard the lyrics about Avalanche I was thinking that I feel so fat looking at her and maybe not eating anymore would do the trick. It worked before.
