    Thank you for sharing your technique on camelias, just got two little ones to practice, some sansaqua with tiny leaves and red flowers, it's autumn here and the buds are formed 😊

      That’s great! Yes sasanqua flower earlier and also have smaller leaves than japonica. Enjoy your trees. I think they’re very charming species.

      The detail about listening for cracks was super helpful, as supple as they were for camelia, I still got a little crack but managed to stop on time by listening. 😂 Also appreciate how you explained that Camelia is all about showing off the flowers and attempted to place my bends on spots that made the buds visible. Thanks Terry!

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai

      I must admit to cracking many myself, it’s unavoidable if trying to put some tight bends into plants that have woody growth. However I just seal the crack immediately and they are usually fine.
      Thanks for the feedback! 👍🏻🙏🏻

    Stunning! I would have never thought that Camellia lend themselves to literati style, but the effect is just stunning! Do you find them difficult to maintain with the lower leaf mass? The large trees are equally impressive. Very interesting seeing the different strategies required for placement of future flower buds. Do you handle similar to azalea or do camellia have their own special needs?

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai

      Thanks so much Sue, always nice to read your great questions.
      In fact I think Camellia are very suited to bunjin or literati style as they have a stunning bark and when in flower if you limit the number of flowers severely they are very powerful. I always allow foliage to develop within reason to boost the plant’s health but before it is likely to leave a large scar it can be cut off. But I also think you ca. rebuild the branches so quickly and easily.
      Mmmm comparing strategy between azalea and camellia. To be honest I cannot think of something that I do differently. However a fundamental difference would be that you’re NEVER going to get the same degree of ramification on a camellia that you will on an azalea. Plus the branching is a coarser on camellia.

    Dear Terry.
    I guess they don’t reduce the foliage.
    Am in right Terry?

      Hi Isidro, thanks for the question. I assume you mean if one cuts the leaves will the size reduce? Yes, if you defoliate you will definately reduce the leaf size.

    Great video as always Terry! Do Camelia air-layer well? My parents have one in their yard and I’d love to air-layer a thicker branch to add a Camelia to my flowering tree collection…

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Vinnie, done at the right time and using the right substrate yes. I’d suggest spring. Use Kanuma if you can get it. Ring bark the branch. The roots are extremely brittle though. So be super careful when separating the layered portion.

      @@TerryErasmusbonsai Thanks for the quick reply! I have quite a bit of kanuma as I use it for my azalea and beech bonsai. I’ll wait until the plant is growing strongly, say, in the summer, and attempt the air-layer then…🌸

      Thanks Robert. Yes, I’m in South Africa so same timing as Australia but more or less opposite the northern hemisphere. However you can’t of course do what I’m doing in Autumn in your Spring, it would need to be your Autumn too.

    Hi Terry please may i request how to thicken roots on a Ficus Ginseng, the ones they sell in Woolies

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Stefan. I am not sure to be honest. Usually they are so thick they’re disproportionate to the grafted trunk and branches. I think the only way would be to plant into a larger container and allow the roots to run.

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! Yes, I love the smaller ones too. When in flower it really attracts a lot of attention.
      I don’t really have a special technique per se for the cuttings. Just take them at the right time of the year. I also find kanuma (substrate) increases the strike rate.

    Beautiful work! 👏🏽 Do you always use 100% Kanuma on your camellias? 🪴

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. But you can grow them in a mix with akadama added too.
