Black metal is something you have to develop and ear for, like opera. Once it clicks you'll find one of the most amazing genres of metal. It just takes patience
@@keeperofknowledge4120 Not me, I couldn't stand black metal at first. I loved death metal but couldn't understand black metal. Dimmu Borgirs Stormblast is what made it click for me. That entire album is perfection
@keeperofknowledge4120 It's weird with me, I was a very devote christian when I got into black metal. I loved the imagery, lyrics and back story of it but was still a bible thumper. Hell I still know a few christian death metal bands I used to listen to. When I turned 22 I finally left the religion.
@keeperofknowledge4120 I love it when people can set aside their beliefs and appreciate beautiful music. I've been around so many people that refuse to hear any kind of music that isn't gospel or country because it's "of the devil" and it makes me sad. Hell as an atheist I still enjoy some of those really old gospel songs. I love the entire soundtrack from O' Brother and will sing them every time I watch the movie. Music is art so just enjoy it. On another note I absolutely hate metal elitist and gatekeepers. Those people that say "that band isn't real metal". Who the fuck cares let people listen to what they enjoy.
Awesome! One of the best and most important blackmetal bands ever. Their Unholy trilogy ”A Blaze in the Northen Sky”, ”Transylvanian Hunger” and ”Under a Funeral Moon are true milestones of puré true icecold beautiful blackmetal. The album ”Panzerfaust” is just as good too👌🤘🔥🤘
Black Metal is known for the blast beats and fast tremolo guitar picking, but something about it has always felt meditative to me. I think it might be the repetition.. it just puts me in a very relaxed and calm mood despite how raw it is. The new wave of black metal is really playing up this aspect with Atmospheric Black Metal and Blackgaze, which I also love. It's hard to really say what is so special about black metal because on its surface it's really unpolished, but if the vibe hits you then it really sticks with you.
Not much of a chance seeing them live, as they don't do concerts. Anyway, in 2004 there was a Satyricon show at Wacken where a special Darkthrone set feat. Nocturno Culto (vocals/guitars) appeared and they played a couple of Darkthrone songs live incl. Transilvanian Hunger. May you find it somewhere. And if I am asked about what the most atmospheric concert I ever attended - there you go!
My favorite Darkthrone album is actually their first album from 1991 named “Soulside Journey”. Imo, it is a perfect OSDM (old school death metal) record. It definitely has some bolt thrower influence. It still has a very blackened influence lyrically, artistically, and vibe-wise but you get to hear all the instruments clearly before they went full lo-fi black metal. Fenriz is a very talented drummer and he kills it on this album. One point to be made about black metal is that a lot of it was a response to the generic becoming and overproduced death metal at the time. So although I understand your thoughts on this tracks sound, it was completely the goal to have it sounds as cold, grim, and low production as possible.
You had to listen to the album when it came out in 1994 (but you're too young), it was a devastating thing that left its mark, even if many metal magazines didn't immediately understand the greatness of the album
Darkthrone were one of the first black metal bands I listened to and instantly made me fall in love with the genre. They're definitely one of the pioneering godfathers of the BM sound.
Oh, and they ARE still together. It's just two guys and they don't like playing live and prefer to make music. Extreme Metal split in the 80s into Black Metal and Death Metal. They started as the Death Metal band Black Death, then changed ro Darkthrone and released the dm album Soulside Journey. Influenced in '91 by fellow Norwegian musicians and friends Emperor, Thorns, Mayhem, and Varg among others. That's when they became one of the founding bands of that scene. But yeah, glad to see you hitting the Black Metal and thanks for finally doing my favorite band. 'Where Cold Winds Blow' is probably my favorite track. Hard to pick a favorite album.
For me darkthrone is the definition of a metal band. If youre just listening to their early black metal youre doing yourself a disservice. They are still a band and just released an album last December DarkThrone is the best, and most consistent black metal band out there. My favorite albums by them is hard to say they have a lot of good albums. "A blaze in the northern sky, Panzerfaust, Ravishing Grimness, Total Death, F.O.A.D., the "too old too cold" EP is good. And the latest release Astral Fortress is really good and I believe you as a studio snob will like all the mixing in it.
They're still a band. They changed genres a couple times, what you listened to is black metal. They don't play live, I believe the closest thing is Nocturno Culto doing a Darkthrone song with Satyricon.
2 pointers on vibe: 1 mood, if your not happy metal sounds ten times better (to me) some times it also mekes you very happy i almost cried once listening to metal! 2, for black metal sitting in nature walking in nature and it shoutbe cold (i never did it but it seems right!
I like Darkthrone allot. Not something I would listen to all the time but when you are in the mood its nice. Also one of the Black Metal Bands from the earlier days that has aged incredibly well compared to their contemporaries
The vibe of black metal, good black metal at least is a mix of deeply miserable and yet beautiful, its very guitar melody driven. Its best to listen out in nature with earphones on, especially in the winter.

Anything from Behexen's two first studio albums would make a nice reaction. Absolute top shelf black metal and modern classics of the genre. Recommended tracks would be Blessed Be the Darkness, Baphomet's Call, Saatanan Varjon Synkkyydessä, Under the Eye of the Lord, By the Blessing of Satan, Celebration of Christ's Fall, Fist Of The Satanist and Mouth of Leviathan. P.S. Darkthrone's Unholy Trinity rules!

"Extreme Metal" is not a Metal sub genre per se, it´s a label where you can put bands that are on the heaviest side of Metal. Usually includes Black Metal, Death Metal, a good part of Thrash Metal, and a few other things.
Definitely the 'Throne at their rawest...such a great back catalog, been listening since 'Soulside Journey' when they were a death metal band; enjoy all the eras; welcome to the Norge Black Metal sound! Metal Archives is a better source than Wikipedia. Regarding Darkthrone, Panzerfaust is my absolute favourite album. P.S: It's pronounced "vargh" instead of "varj". Cheers🤘
No, it actually is pronounced "varj". In norwegian and swedish at least. The "g" is pronounced "j". It's usually the "a" that is difficult to get to sound "nordic" I guess. It should be pronounced rather short and with an attack, not like a drawling "aaaaa" that americans seem to favour.
Darkthrone played their final show at the Rockefeller Music Hall in Oslo, Norway on April 6, 1996. The band has since put out roughly a dozen records since then but absolutely refuses to play live. Or as Darkthrone guitarist Nocturno Culto puts it in an interview with Wall Of Sound, Darkthrone has turned down plenty of opportunities to be wealthy over the years. Culto explains that he and Fenriz view themselves as two dudes passionate about what they do, and have no interest in the public adoration that comes with live shows. Which is a super respectable decision… but how much are these tour and show offers for?
"I know like these original black metal bands were like garage basement recordings." Yep, this was recorded in Fenriz's bedroom on the cheapest 4 track that they could find in 1993, mostly because they were broke. That ended up unintentionally creating a trend and now people deliberately want to sound like that lol.
Darkthrone has released quite a few records over the years and latest just came out while ago. Worthy to check them all out!! Yeah, they where the first or least one of those who played black metal, in the way the Norwegian became famous for. You can hear influences from different metal styles on their records. Everybody has their own fav era of bands catalog. Some like only this early black metal albums, some maybe all and so on. Great band still. I like how they do their recordings. They sound a little different every time - but still Darkthrone!! One of my fav records from them is The Underground Resistance (2013), Goatlord (1996), The Cult Is Alive (2006), Astral Fortress (2022)..
I run into Fenriz from Darkthrone at my local shop every now and then, crazy how almost noone recognizes the dude, he just looks like a everyday metaldude. He is such a legend, and pretty much the most loved guy in all of Metal lol
Fenriz says the songs came from series of depressions; katabasis to anabasis. "Music for the evil in man." Darkness is perhaps a better word than evil; the music isn't evil. Pessimistic meditation.
“A blaze in the northern sky” is my favorite. I think you would like the production of that album more than this one actually. It’s very nicely mixed, but it still has the primitive classic black metal sound!
Great reaction, yeah black metal is more like vibe music with emphasis on feel and atmosphere. If you like black metal with better production, worth checking out bands like Mgla, Odraza, Dissection or Drudkh.
Darkthrone is one of the original of the second wave of black metal that came out of Norway. One of my favorite bands of all time. I'd have to go with "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" if I were to pick an album, it's definitely one that's worth a deep dive although still a tough choice between all of their early stuff. It's too bad they don't play live anymore but at least they're still putting out some pretty killer albums \m/ \m/
We all want to hear darkthrone live!! Millions and millions of black metal fans would love to experience that I think that would be like one of the biggest selling metal events of all time besides if varg decided to do burzum live if both bands decided for some miraculous reason to do music live I'm telling you that would be historical for black metal .
I don't want to see Darkthrone live! Ever! Not Burzum either. I am certain that live would ruin everything. Some music is better experienced alone with no idiot drunks around you shouting for their favorite hit songs.
I listen to atmospheric black metal when I sleep haha. when it comes to the Norwegian bands from the 90s, I have to be done with punk for the day while I'm listening to music at work
Darkthrone have some of the most sick albuns on Black metal..you should listem to Mayhem, pioneers of norwegian black metal, and about their sick history..theres even an american movie about their history
Great assessment and summation. I have the first four Darkthrone CDs on original 1st pressings. Looking forward to your critique on... Post Mortem Superstar -Which Witch Wroughts! **It will definitely surprise you**
Darkthrone album favorites change over time--right now, my favorite is "Old Star," which came out in 2019. But there's a time and a place for each. I have to admit I have been enjoying the current "Doomthrone" era, too... \m/@@\m/
Darkthrone are classic, and still releasing great music. It's funny you kept talking about how this would be great live because they refuse to play live.
Cool thing about Darkthrone which is why I'm a longtime huge fan is there's still mystery to them, mainly musically, every record they put out, you never really know how they're gonna sound exactly, although at their core, they're still Black Metal, but they made so many changes and experiments to their sound, every couple records, they'll play a different style or genre!, some bands sounds the same each record so gets stale and boring, Darkthrone records always sounds different from each other, vocally too, some records, Nocturnal Culto, the main vocalist, does all while others, Fenriz does some vocal parts too, Culto has changed his vocal style on various releases over the years, as bandmate Fenriz puts it " we don't rehearse vocals, we just go in and do them, so i never know how Ted(Culto) is gonna do them, so it's always a surprise" good example is on Panzerfaust, which they did after Transylvanian Hunger, i listened to the commentary track they put out for their records, they recorded Panzerfaust in Fenriz house and were doing the vocals in his living room, he thought that NC was gonna do them like he had before, they been hanging out and getting drunk and when it got time to do record his tracks, Culto decided to do them a little different, he was screaming them so loud, Fenriz said the whole house shook!it's the angriest, craziest primal screams i think ever recorded to tape, you can head how much pain he's in screaming and in some places sounds like he's gonna puke! Darkthrone is definitely a musical journey🤘⸸⛧⸸🤘😎
I think black metal is the closest we get to classical music without the use of atmospheric or normal classical string instruments. Black metal captures the dark emotions and anger so amazing. You could pick an instrument in black metal songs and each one will show the song is about something dark. All black metal is about evil, darkness, anger and things like that and you don’t even have to know the lyrics to know that’s what it is. Love black metal
Indeed my favorite musical genres are classical music and black metal. Some might consider this weird, but to me it's like the two sides of the same coin.
They're still a band. They don't play live. They have gone through black metal, punk, heavy metal. Somehow they always manage to just capture something so them.
Interesting reaction to the band! Super curious as to what you think about Deafheaven (it gets a lot hate for not being black metal enough). Sunbather is one of my favorite albums of theirs
Transilvanian Hunger's main riff is one of the best metal riffs ever made, iconic and recognizable everywhere.
It's so weirdly catchy too. Almost pop somehow [like you can whistle it. It's a sweet little tune]. But so anti in the sound. Darkthrone rocks.
The riff to Transylvania hunger is one of the most haunting yet beautiful black metal riffs ever constructed

I listen to atmospheric black metal when I sleep haha. when it comes to the Norwegian bands from the 90s, I have to be done with punk for the day while I'm listening to music at work
They played so few shows and yes they are still a band. One of my favourites!
Contt-Darkthrone,not just music.
Why not, but they don't make it "live" any more. Time machine to early nineties you'll need.
Darkthrone have some of the most sick albuns on Black metal..you should listem to Mayhem, pioneers of norwegian black metal, and about their sick history..theres even an american movie about their history
A great review :) as always!
Transilvanian Hunger is perhaps the best example of Darkthrone 2nd wave. The coldest, fastest, blurriest.
They rule I've had this cd for years thats cool ....enjoy
Great assessment and summation. I have the first four Darkthrone CDs on original 1st pressings. Looking forward to your critique on...
Post Mortem Superstar -Which Witch Wroughts!
**It will definitely surprise you**
You should get a blaze in the northern sky. It’s easily better than this
Love your reaction
Darkthrone album favorites change over time--right now, my favorite is "Old Star," which came out in 2019. But there's a time and a place for each. I have to admit I have been enjoying the current "Doomthrone" era, too... \m/@@\m/
Darkthrone are classic, and still releasing great music. It's funny you kept talking about how this would be great live because they refuse to play live.
You should dig into darkthrone. Hear what they sound like now that they're old men.
Darkthrone is definitely a musical journey🤘⸸⛧⸸🤘😎
i think you are ready for burzum 1992 album.
Transylvanian hunger ... dark ... cold ... my favorite
Fenriz is the man period 🤘😈🤘
They're still a band. They don't play live. They have gone through black metal, punk, heavy metal. Somehow they always manage to just capture something so them.
Transylvanian hunger is a studio Recorded album the not being clean is kinda part of the genre
This is what every modern black metal band wishes they sounded like
Bad news on the Darkthrone live bit. They have refused to play live since the mid 90s.
Mayhem - Funeral Fog, please??
Transelvanion hunger is my fav song by dark throne🤘💀🤘
Interesting reaction to the band! Super curious as to what you think about Deafheaven (it gets a lot hate for not being black metal enough). Sunbather is one of my favorite albums of theirs
Definitely one of BM OGs. I'd suggest you to listen to those Burzum, Satyricon & Mayhem early albums.
Darkthrone doesn't tour. I think they did one show?
And I think they're also a 2 piece band atm.
I think Darkthrone last played live in the 80s. Maybe they will again though! lol
They are still going but have never play live. Their fist album Soulside Journey is a brilliant death album.
