He has captured the definitive camp and impending dread of fascism by performing as a literal puppet of the third Reich. His performance was chilling and flawless. My favorite Broadway performance and revival to date!
Just saw the show in NYC on June 3 and it is OUTSTANDING!! He takes this role to a new place and seeing him in person throughout the show is mesmerizing. Must see if you’re headed to NYC.
Eddie Redmayne's interpretation of the MC character is definitely different from any other actor's. That doesn't mean it is wrong or bad. This entire production, from what I have seen and read is very different. I believe it is somewhat updated. I have not seen it and hope it keeps the integrity of the story, which is dark and scary, with comedy infused to keep the audience entertained.
People are forgetting that the camera is inches away from his face. In the theatre you wouldn't see him up close. Why the director felt the need to film his performance like this instead of from afar like in a regular audience is baffling.
He was BRILLIANT!!! This the decadent, morally testing and imaginative era of 1930s Germany...some amazing things came out of that...one NOT BEING the Nazi regime...art,furniture design, architecture was far ahead of its time..something to consider about the difference in cultural history...loved it!🎉
People can be so stupid. They are judging a performance with no idea of what and who the character is supposed to be. I think he was epic. The ultimate emcee is and always will be Joel Grey (who , in my opinion, is much scarier) but Eddie was the best I've seen since Joel Grey. This character is supposed to be scary and menacing as hell and he accomplished that well.
@@BrowardWitch954Stop grouping all critics into the same group… some people don’t know what Cabaret is and think the performance is unsettling… but most people do know what Cabaret is but do not enjoy Eddie’s stylistic choices as an actor… two very different groups

@@kasity I’m not grouping anyone. I have always stated there are the educated theatre critics whose opinions matter & then ‘critics’ (nobodies) with access to the internet that have never heard of Cabaret. The LOUDER opinions seem to be, as always, coming from the uneducated.
Ignorance. People talk without knowing and just responding to their first very personal emotion. I don't know a S about this and just knowing is Eddy Redmaine and watching just a bit of that performance in TH-cam I know the rest. He's doing an amazing job. That kind of performances are full of different details which tells something. Maybe something in history, something emotional, something psychological, something the creators and authors souls dare to say and the actors dare to act. That's a piece of Art. That's all.
The play takes place in Weimar Germany in the 1930s, with creeping fascism and the rise of Nazism. And so it's particularly striking when the Emcee poses with his arms creating a swastika...this performance definitely strikes the right tone, and if you think it's creepy and disturbing, then Eddie Redmayne and the rest of the cast have done their jobs. It's supposed to make you uncomfortable, and hopefully it will wake people up to the current situation with the rise of white nationalism and Right-wing national populism around the world.
It was an amazing show! I did not know Cabaret before this, and I left the theater with a hole on my soul. I thought Redmayne was amazing! I do, however, like Alan Cummings ending better.
I have seen Cabaret 4 times, both in NY and in the West End. I know what Cabaret is about, and I still find Eddie Redmayne's portrayal disgusting. When I saw it on the Tony's, my jaw dropped. I thought I was seeing a clip from one of the Saw movies.
Yaaaa, no. The popular opinion is the exact opposite. & I’ve seen MANY variations of Cabaret. His rendition is epic. I don’t see ‘clown’ either.. all the actors were dressed in the same style.
Fascinating that you KNOW what it is or isn't. I think this is an absolute brilliant reimagination of the character. If you want an actual Cabaret show might I suggest going to Moulin Rouge. This "Cabaret" should be disturbing and leave you feeling fairly uncomfortable. It should resemble the human but should be clearly inhuman considering the content it is addressing

I’m annoyed of people hating on his performance. It LITERALLY IS HIS INTERPRETATION. And he was influenced by French puppetry.

He was terrific 💪🏻
Saw it on Mother’s Day☺️
He was so awesome, see it in person!
Eddie is brilliant. May jet to NY to see Cabaret
❤
Eddie is fabulous 🎉

Brilliance in action!
It’s a wonderful what Eddy does! Very artistic and it’s beautiful on its own 👏👏👏👏
I loved the 'sleep paralysis demon' description 😅😅😅😅😅
I've seen the London revival. It's fantastic!
Eddie Redmayne, you absolutely SMASHED this role and made it completely new and your own. BRAVO - what a treat to be able to watch it!
This interpretation is BRILLIANT. I will not stand for Eddie Redmayne hate!
Those disjointed arm movements depict a swastika if you watch carefully.... brilliant choreo.
He is fabulous❤❤❤

YES! Exactly what I said. Unqualified commentators who obviously don’t understand ‘Cabaret’ or, it seems, theatre at all.

Did anyone see Barry Dennen as MC in the original London Production because he sounds amazing on the cast recording?
Muppet treasure island. 🤣🤣
He is absolutely incredible. These unqualified commentators don’t obviously understand how theatre works & their opinions hold no weight.

Well said
Agreed!
Watch the Graham Norton version with Callum Scott Howell from it’s a sin ! And Madeline from the hands maid tale ! That’s unreal ❤
It was an amazing show! I did not know Cabaret before this, and I left the theater with a hole on my soul. I thought Redmayne was amazing! I do, however, like Alan Cummings ending better.
Eddie was awesome
😂 I love it! ❤
It's a very disconcerting performance but that's not necessarily a bad thing!
At least his performance was better than that god awful take on 'The Outsiders' 😭

It was very disjointed and off-putting. Certainly a choice - but probably translates better in the theater than on film.
Cabaret is NOT a clown show. If one understands or knows Cabaret one would see how bad this is.

you spelled brilliant wrong
The Outsiders and Redmayne: 👎👎
