Gerry Talaoc is a "Filipino Invasion" guy, Walt Simonson briefly mentions swiping some lettering ideas from him in your shoot interview.

I actually have 2 copies of this book! One autographed by John Buscema! Met him only once in Ithaca just after the book was out! I asked him why he wasn’t drawing Conan anymore? Big John replies “ Conan NOT gonna put my kids through college! Blunt honesty but friendly curmudgeon and he knocks out a Wasp sketch for me with a pen! Whoa! Godspeed,Big John!

Super cool comic I've never seen! Buscema is the GOAT in my opinion. Sal is a very underrated artist as well.

Gerry Talaoc - one of the many awesome 1970s import filipino artists. I know him best from his run inking Sal Buscema on #291-312(?). His inks transformed Sal's work. ALL his work is solid.

Did some full art, pencils and inks, at DC on Phantom Stranger and Unknown Soldier. The run with Micheline in Star Spangled War is intense stuff.

Don't know what method he used with Frank Miller, but this is what Stan Lee said about John Buscema: "One thing I loved about Big John is the fact that I didn't have to spend time writing synopses for him. ... He'd always growl over the phone, 'Don't bother sending me any outlines, Stan. I hate to waste time reading them. Just tell what you've got in mind over the phone. I'll remember it.' So I'd tell him the story I wanted, and I have a hunch he didn't even write any notes while I spoke - because I spoke too fast - but it didn't matter. He remembered every last detail and the stories always came out perfect - at least as far as I was concerned."

I feel like with the mother character miller might be referencing an old jack kirby mob comic he did for DC in his 70’s era

That was literally Ma Barker in that Kirby Comic.

    Classic issue.
Great to hear the mention of Buscema on Wolverine. The teaming with Sienkiewicz needs to be seen in b&w. It's really on another level.

The Miller & Janson DD TPB are a good get for this comic. They did it right, not glossy white paper with bright colors like the Masterworks & Epic Collections stuff.

This could be the first Jack Reacher story, wonder if Lee Child ever read this

I wonder if Miller may have provided thumbnails or really quick breakdowns along with a script to move things along, giving Buscema license to deviate if he wished. Some of those layouts are a bit more compressed than what I remember about Buscema books.

Fantastic video! First time seeing this book for me, the only thing I would add is how beautiful the coloring and FX lettering are in it.

This book man, this fucking book. I think this is the first "grown-up" book that I ever owned/read. I must've been like 12 or 13 and was used to regular super hero books and a family friend gifted me this one for my bday along with some other regular books. This one immediately caught my eye, right from the cover; it seemed so dark, creepy and disturbing. Once I got to reading it, I was shaken up, it was so dirty and mean, there was no colorful super hero, it was just a lot of bad and depressed people. I didn't quite understand the story and had to read it a couple of times, my little brain couldn't grasp a story where good guys die and in such a violent way.
I haven't read it in a long time, but I think about it often, definitely one of my favorite DD stories of all time. Glad you guys took a look at it and it got me to appreciate the wonderful art by Buscema. It is quite gorgeous and is very well suited for this story. I can see a fair amount of Conan faces throughout the book.

This comic is actually just a retelling of the Clint Eastwood film, High Plains Drifter. Even some of the dialogue is exactly the same. It's pretty baffling. Miller must have just watched it and decided to make a comic.

When Kirby left the Fantastic Four and Thor it wasn't long before Stan got John Buscema on both books. Also John Romita Sr said he was glad to pass the book to Buscema.
