Just an amazing lens. I've held onto it for ages & saw some slightly sharper but this has a buttery smooth character to it. Paired in my f1.4D trinity w/ the 28 & 50, it's blooming brilliant. This does great w/ a B+W VND filter in daylight matrix balanced fill flash 1/250.
Lovely little review -nicely done. I'm awaiting this little beauty in the post and I'm really looking forward to it. The examples on flickr look awesome !
I bought the lens in 2010 and never looked back. 9 years later and still using it. Can't say enough the beauty of the lens and the moment I felt in love with it.
I found this a very interesting review and I pretty much agree with you completely. I've used this lenses sense it came out. I sold mine to get the 85mm f/1.4 G, but after about 2 months, I didn't like it much. The G lens is ever-so slightly sharper wide open, but the D lens built so much better, has perfect contrast for portraits, better bokeh and truer color and much better/more real skin tones. My camera shop allow me to swap for my old lens (same exact lens). I lost a few hundred, but I'm much happier with the D lens. Best wishes Steven.
Interesting, I was going to change to the G years ago but for the same reasons, I prefer the cooler rendering of the D vs the G and the, the less saturated colour and nicer bokeh, so I kept the D. I now shoot it on a D810. Keep in touch.
Owned many years ago and now this week bought it again in super condition. Its a keeper and although i own the 86G and the 104 1,4 i will use this on my Nikon Df as a great combo for some amazing portraits :)
The 85mm f/1.4 Nikkor is my second favorite head & shoulder portrait lens. My first favorite is the 180mm for my Mamiya RB67 medium format film SLR. Both lenses use 77mm filters.
Steve have you still got this lens? I got mine a couple of months ago and only recently noticed that the rear element wobbles a little bit when you press on it; does your lens behave the same? Thanks
Sorry, sounded like you said "always shittin' near windows" 😂😂 Nice review! I just can't seem to justify the extra $900-1000 for the G lens, especially because you can pick one of these up used for around $700-800. does this focal length work well for a dx camera? I'm currently shooting on a D7100 :)
+Cassidy Moore Ha ha thanks. It will be about 128mm on a DX camera (will appear more "zoomed in"). 85mm and 135mm are good portrait lengths. I still own this lens. I find it better than the G which is why I have not upgraded.
Add me on facebook - facebook.com/stevenrobinsonpictures you'll see this lens in action, it's my most used.

Ive gone from dslrs to mirrorless and now back to dslrs. I like the images more filmic than mirrorless and the lenses are much cheaper too!
Great review, gorgeous lens. Many thanks!

Gorgeous lens, great review. Thank you.
Gotta grab these 3D-pop lenses while they still exist
I don’t use it often but it goes on my camera for almost all people photos.
What's the weigh from this lens?

Excellent review Steven, I'm sold!
Just shifted from CANON .....how is the AF speed of this lens with Nikon D850
Can it be used on a full frame like D750? Thank you.
+andreiiasi Yes it's made for full frame (ie 35mm sensors).
I come from Canon ...no idea about Nikon lenses etc etc. I learn a lot now about all this stuff.
Can I use it for Dx camera ?
wont autofocus on cheaper models such as D3000, D5000 series but should work fine on D7000 series or D500
