between Pain and Itachi I can never figure out who I love more. Both amazing characters, so in depth, so well written, so well acted out, 2 of the most amazing anime characters in history.
Personally i think that Itachi had the best Backstory and Character development but the Pain story is more realistic and impactful within the plot i liked Kishi for demonstrating the cruel reality of orphans that living in War Zones this is one of the reasons that i personally wanted the plot to end with the Pain presence in the leaf Village.

The Anime kind of polished his ideas, and in this season they reached the absolute peak. Minor flaws ignored.

Pain's speech about "Cycle of hatred" is the best anime speech I've ever heard. I don't even remember any movie speech that challenges his speech. Such a great character. RIP Nagato, Yahiko and Konan...
At first, when i saw him, i thought he seemed very annoying and i didn't like him since he killed Jiraiya. But when I heard his Cycle of Hatred or something like that, I felt his pain. It hit me hard when he said, "what about MY parents, MY friends, MY village?" And when he said, "Everybody feels pain when you lose something precious to you." He was truly a great person.
The thing that hurts me in all of this is that in the end, despite all the efforts of our protagonists, despite all that why Naruto, Jiraya and the others fought, In the end Nagato (Pain) was right. After an Ephemeral peace, the cycle of hatred resumes. You can see it in Boruto. And the thing that marks me the most in Pain's words is when he tells Naruto that humans are not the most intelligent creatures in the universe, I never understood what Pain meant at that time, I realize now that he was speaking consciously or unconsciously of Ôtsutsuki.

Pain was honestly suppressed by the directors of this movie he showed use of the rinegan beyond even it's originals brought back a whole village to life.Too bad the seventh pain was never really shown in true action without tailed beast power or the power directed to reincarnates showing such imense capability unlike even all the others who had to rely on hashirama cells or their uchiha bloodline he can only be second to sage of six paths...obito couldn't even use the powers of both the rinegans on his eye and diverse the jutsus on his six paths and Sasuke gets tired from even using his one eyed rinegan...reanimated Madara losing still to hashirama despite wielding a rinegan said to absorb wood release proves all that
but the thing is that those eyes belonged to Madara Uchiha, he woke those eyes up and when he was about to die he gave those eyes to Nagato. means Nagato couldnt make full use of the Rinnegan aswell. the only one who could make full use of those eyes was Madara Uchiha as he woke them up, you can see that those eyes belonged to Madara when he sealed all 9 tailed beasts in Gado Mazo with ease.

Yeah the Whole manga was built towards those two as the final "endboss" for sasuke itachi and nagato for naruto
