Please see the description of the video to know where to buy red wigglers or composting worms . If cow manure is not available , brown cardboard that is soaked overnight in water and shredded is also an excellent option for a bedding , worms absolutely love brown cardboard . Yup that’s a good tip. It’s what did. I had a large ibc 500 gallon tote I cut in half. And then I added worms and filled it half way up with horse manure and other things cause like ya said bedding is good. It’s amazing how fast they eat. I filled it clear to the top later on with shredded paper, wood debris, and lawn/leaves and they reduced it by half the volume. I would go months without feeding or watering. It’d rain and that seemed to keep the bottom wet enough, but the top would dry out in the summer so I’d water it. I’d hate thou recommend large ibc totes since you can add a ton of manure and worms and sort of forget about it.
I am brand new to your videos and I already love you. This is the second one I’m watching. You are so informative and I just love your voice! So much love from the USA
thank you for sharing your expertize with us. Your voice is very comforting. I am getting used to the idea of worms. They kind of freak me out but I know I need them for a healthy soil.
Nice to see you back with videos on vermicomposting. Same thing has happened with me but I could not find any worms. I need to start afresh. You mentioned that there were only few small worms but from where so many suddenly apoeared. Thanks for providing the contact details of Mr Gujjar. Hope he shipps the worms. Anyway I will try to contact him. Seeing your videos gets one charged again to continue the hobby.
Thank you !! These worms in the plate were really tiny , far and few through out the bin, had to look with hawk's eyes to locate them. Here you see them together and feel there are many but infact they were few . Normally in a worm bin that is thriving you will see large number of worms together enjoying the scraps , you wont need to look for them . Yes we get inspired by others , I too watch gardeners and their work and get inspired , glad to know you are all charged to start your worm bin again :)
Thankfully worm bins can be very forgiving to us If we neglect them whether it be a little loss of interest as i myself do with all things I like to do in life. As long as they aren't left for a month or more and are kept moist with plenty of carbon matter, for the most part they will be alright. The longest I've ever neglected my bins was 3 weeks an i was honestly mad at myself and scared to check an find the poor lil guys dead or died trying to migrate. Luckily about 2 inchs below the surface it was still damp and I was shocked they were perfectly fine. I don't suggest neglecting them often but it's a fact more people screw up a bin by babying it and stressing out their worms by checking an messing with them daily. P.S. I apologized to my worms fed them 8 honeydew melons and threw them one hell of a knee slappin shindig. They assured me it was all forgiven and were greatful.🙂
Haha yes I can relate to everything you have mentioned . After the initial enthusiasm ( mine lasted for several years lol) we are all guilty of neglecting our worm bins and they really are so forgiving , we have to mend our ways with our pets :)
Really depends on available space with you . Any container / breathable sac of your choice , not air tight and you can sprinkle water from time to time to keep microbial life going on .
Hi , I have already done a video on how to get worms for the first time a few weeks ago , please see that video . Regular earthworms present in the soil are not composting worms .
Can I add dried leaves instead of coco-peat? Also do i have to continuosly add food scraps? I want to do this at my office, where we dont have regular food scrap. What can be done?
First time bedding needs to be cocopeat , cow manure and powdered egg shells , please see that video ( how to set up a new worm bin ) . Once bin is established , you can add other things , please see that video - worm bin bedding options . In office fruit peels , coffee grounds , teabags if available and shredded paper can be added .

Yes the worms were barely visible in the bin and really tiny because of the neglect and I had no idea they were going to put on this show !! The worms are really such sweet creatures . I still remember the days I was stalking them every 10 mins , then I didnt have the bees to stalk lol :)
I am looking to start my own worm bin in mumbai but since i am extremely scared of lizards i think i may go with a closed crate. Will it work in these temperatures if I keep it moist enough??
If you want to use a closed crate and be successful , the only way is to keep your bin indoors in an ac environment . Our weather in Mumbai is not suitable for worm composting at least 8 months of the year , the heat kills most of the worms , watering cannot change the temperature much , you cannot keep watering either . It is a tricky situation even with an open bin like mine . Hope you get the idea .
That's a great video for which i am waiting to learn about worms and composting in a easy way. I have prepared my worm bin according to your instruction and shifted the worms with there previous bedding on the one side of my new one. How much time take my worms to shift in new bedding. Thanks for sharing your experance.
Thank you , glad to know you found the video helpful . The worms will take at least 2 weeks to shift to the new bedding . You can use the watermelon trick to capture the tiny worms from the old bedding to remove all of them , if you are okay with them going into your garden with the vermicompost , you can skip the watermelon trick . The video is there ,you must have seen it .
As a survival instinct most earthworms come up during rains , even composting worms . So yes you could give it a try with the worms you collect in the rains , some of them could be red wigglers or African night crawlers . Good luck !!
I don’t understand what happened around the flipping of the plate; is it she didn’t realize how many handful of worms she had found in the 1hr? Or had she set the plate on the vermicompost and they migrated there since it was the only undisturbed area?
The bin looked like there were no worms in it , so I decided to investigate and hand pick what I could find into this plate after putting a small amount of VC in the plate so that worms could hide under it . Once I was done I turned over the plate to check and the worms had collected like this - it's a survival instinct to stay together when stressed . I was also surprised to see there were enough worms . Since then I don't check no of worms any more , they reduce in numbers when too hot and increase when conditions are favorable . Hope you got it .
Really love your videos. Just a humble request please share a video of worm compsting with minute details like what should be requirements of the container for worm composting at home what to add first
Honestly the purpose of having a worm bin is defeated if one uses cornmeal or special foods unless ofcourse one wants to sell the worms . I use corn cobs . You can just grate off corn , keep the corn for yourself and put the cob for the worms. Ample kitchen scraps too to keep them happy . Never used corn flour .
Soil worms are not composting worms . You will need to connect with a local gardener or someone who keeps composting worms - red wigglers or African night crawlers.
You will need to fix the problem , change location , place your worm bin on a raised platform ( may be 4 bricks or a small table ) and put the bricks or legs of the table in a bowl or dish of water to prevent ants going to the worm bin . Put neem oil in the water to prevent mosquito breeding . Also water your bin so that ants present will leave , they come when they find a dry location. If this is a worm bed in ground , just water it very well , can't think of any other option for it .
I'm confused. Did you pick them from the bin and placed it onto the plate? Did they just gather in the plate by themselves? You just placed the plate under the soil or over it?
Yes I picked them from the bin into the plate to know how many worms are there , on routine look through it seemed there were hardly any . The worms arranged themselves in the plate in that manner which I saw when I turned the plate over . It was a fun moment !!
Oh dear.. this is so stunning to watch. Even I want to start a worm bin. But I live in desert. Is It feasible here in hot and arid climate here in UAE? Or I should keep it indoors?
Yes the worms are amazing , if you can get hold of some worms definitely you can do this in the UAE , it will have to be an indoor bin and they will thrive in AC temps .
African night crawers are the best worms in hot climates I live now in Thailand and no problems with the heat with them. I also have tiger worms ( Same woŕm as red wrigglers ) Even they are doing OK up to now Tiger worms eat in the top two inches of the bin Night crawers feed deeper down So some people mix the two types in the same bin But if you intend to sell the worms People only want one type of worm usually
Those worms are probably regular earthworms not composting worms . I suggest you dig a hole in your yard ( shaded area) , put a good quantity of kitchen scraps , cover and water it . Check after 2 weeks to see if there are worms around this area and use those worms to start your worm bin .
Fresh bedding options are many , just coco coir isn't ideal . Search bedding options on my channel . For a brand new bin mix of cow manure , coco coir , powdered egg shells , all of which is moist is best ( check the video for new worm bin ) .
