A COUPLE THINGS: 1) This is a college exhibition show, not a high school 2) I know you were probably told just “march over people” that went down 3) If you’re wondering why there are hardly any views on a video with nearly 2 million views, there used to be thousands of comments. I set the video to private by mistake not realizing it would remove all the comments so now the comment section is empty. Enjoy the video. Be a good person.
First thing I would have done after sitting them down is taking off their uniform jacket for them if able to then get soemone to help (if they have a core uniform underneath)
I’m in high school and they told us “If you see someone faint whether it’s summer band, after school rehearsal, football games, competition, UIL, state championships, or even grand nationals, help them out. Don’t put a fellow bandmate’s life in jeopardy just to get a better score, 'cause depending on the judge they might lower your score.”
As someone who is currently studying to be a band director, I’d be proud to have a student like you. A score on a piece of paper means nothing compared to a student’s safety. I hope your band director saw it the same way.
Jack Moseley so what your saying is if someone happened to have a seizure or heart attack you would rather continue with the show then to stop and help that person 🤔
@@jackmoseley1628 maybe you don't know, but people can literally just start having heart attacks, strokes, seizures, etc. A lot of the time they've never had one before and don't know what's going on. Obviously if you have issues you wouldn't even be cleared to do a sport in the first place.
@@jackmoseley1628 Uh yes it does happen. A heart attack happens when tissue in the heart doesn't get enough blood. Sure it isn't likely but it definitely isn't 'close to none' to happening. Again the person may have an underlying condition that wasn't known. Yes maybe they shouldn't "stop the show" but someone, like in the video, definitely needs to help the kid because they could easily die if they don't get the help they need. I really really hope for the sake of students that you aren't and won't be a band director because obviously your best interest is the show, winning, and perfecting, and not the students.
Dear Scott. I have never seen this before and never knew who had "rescued" Weston off the field. Thank you so much for "stepping up" and showing him compassion and grace. This Mama thanks you :)
The quotations are meant to emphasize that it was a rescue and not just someone who didnt care dragging someone off the field to get them out of the way. Rescue as in having compassion and making sure the person was ok and getting the necessary help. As for stepping up...its because no one else did and is emphasizing that at least Scott did. I totally get the quotations as there is nothing hard to understand about it and is not sarcasm.
Caleb Matlock he could have had a searious medical problem and could have died, who gives a fuck about scoring if someone’s life is endangered its better to be safe than sorry and if it was serious they could have taken one loss just because someone needed help, not ruining the show isn’t anyone’s priority but the band instructor so just chill dude and rethink the value of a human life
I've always been told in my band "if someone falls, you DON'T stop to help them, the show has to go on" completely different story when that person has fallen and not gotten up, I applaud you.
Sarah Estell I was told that the show must go on no matter what, the most to do is try and signal medics if they haven't yet noticed and otherwise do nothing different to usual
We don’t have drum corps here in New Zealand but I air trading corps and we sometime do three hour parades and we’re told if anyone faints we aren’t allowed to move we have to stay at attention. I applaud what you did you are amazing
Well in this case the marcher fainted, either meaning he brain lost oxygen or blood supply. if the lack of nutrients last he could become cripple for the rest of his life or even die, so any director that follows those rules should reevaluate the situation
My band director said “I don’t care if someone dies on the field, you keep going! No matter what! From brass player to a guard performer” but knowing me I’d go help then (even if I’m only in color guard)
I had a thought. During a football game, when someone faints or is injured, the whole entire game is stopped and everybody stays silent for the fallen player out of respect. But when it comes around band, if somebody faints, the marcher is ignored and everybody continues on. I am in marching band myself so I understand the value of how a show looks. But shouldn’t the marcher be shown the same respect?
Well actually, in my band, the coaches always asks the team wether that we are ready or not before the performance. Its a mistake if you force yourself for the show. You better just take a rest because the risk is what's in that video might happen. Wether you're a drum corps or a marching band, our main goal is to perform the best show. That's why we're tought to cover up our mistakes and improvise.
Pomfiyon In my school, marching band isn’t a sport but it should be. We get more support than our football team. And that’s saying something Moral of this: 👏🏻Make 👏🏻Marching 👏🏻Band👏🏻a 👏🏻Sport 👏🏻
I’ve seen so many comments on people who’s band is unwilling to help if someone collapses. The person could be dehydrated, overheated, having a stroke, having a seizure, and so much more. That person’s life could be in danger and people aren’t willing to risk a performance for a fellow band member? That’s insane.
I know a few people who are in band, and ive seen people go down during games and everyone stops. Our games are at night and its still rediculously hot out here and no matter what, you stop and help.
Kronk well, it’s not the band members fault all the time. Like echo said, you only need 1 person to help, 2 max. And a lot of directors drill into your head, “don’t stop for anything, the show must go on” while a lot of directors wouldn’t mean, don’t stop and help someone if they’ve passed out, but rather the band members thinking that way. I know I personally would stop no matter what, even if my director told me not to, luckily she doesn’t, but still. Unless I really couldn’t, I would definitely stop. And I know a lot of people would too.
The band ur in is like a second family if u don’t help them it’s like saying u would not save a family member from death and it makes me mad bc like I said it’s ur family u have to help family screw competition marks help ur band mates first
DragonLover 3690 I agree, only one or two people need to help and often times it’s not to serious but if what happened is life threatening, I think the whole band should stop because that persons life is more important than a score. And if it’s at a game or something when your just playing on the sideline, someone should stop and make sure they’re ok and then help them best they can
jinnie eats When I worked the city day parades with the PD, there were 5ft troughs of water along the route. If any band member was looking like heat exhaustion or sun stroke, they were immediately dunked in the water. Uniform and all to cool the person down immediately. Many schools that marched had only fall/winter wool uniforms to wear for football season. Didn’t go well for the summer day parade. The dunk saved many from further complications.
Yeah it really is dangerous to March in some degrees. They won't stop the show for ANYTHING at all. 4 years ago a girl guard broke her foot in the middle of the show and she had to crawl back off the field to get out of everyone's way. Another light-hearted example, two days ago when we were practicing I had shoes on that were a little too big for me (in our style of March, we March backwards on our toes) so I started back marching and both my shoes fell off and are woodwinds the director had to sprint and take them off the field.
I dont care if this is a competition. You my friend are a good person and sacrificing your part in the show to help him was the most selfless thing you could do. And to stay by him was even more selfless. you are an inspiration
I know that was a tough call but it was better 2 keep going. Also don't make the people who ignored him seem like bad people. They just followed orders
Ethan McKelroy "Following orders"? This isn't the marines or something, its marching band. I'm pretty sure the judges (if there even are any) aren't going to point him for helping a marcher who fainted off the field. When someone faints, you must always assume its serious. Sure, it could just be heat stroke or exhaustion, but he could have been having a stroke, and no one would save him just to save a performance. This was the right call.
Ethan McKelroy Are you kidding me, kid? Someone fainting could be something serious, he could've been having a stroke or any sort of attack. "Follow orders", dude, no, when someone is on the ground FOR THAT LONG, you know it's something serious, yeah, sometimes kids fall and they get up and it makes a funny TH-cam video in the future, but this guy said, he had been on the floor for 10 seconds, that's a little too long for someone to not get off the ground and dust themselves off. He did the right thing, trophies and medals aren't everything, kid. Smh
As a band director, good for you! Thank you for helping your teammate, and not just helping to the sideline, but making sure he got water and sat down in the shade. That level of community and commitment to each other is what band is all about. Internet high five!
I've seen violinists faint off their chairs and their violin was still clutched in their hand. It's fascinating how we are all trained to grip that thing and don't let go no matter what. Even our subconscious knows not to drop the instrument
lmao thats me with my glasses when i sleep in the car, i never let go of my glasses because i know that it could fall and i wouldn’t be able to find them for like 5 minutes
My old director say “you can fall on your stuff, you can fall on yourself, but never, ever fall on your instrument” and I think we all got that talk at some point haha
Bruh I passed out at a competition before because I was was having a seizure and they just left me there. Stepping over me. No body came to help to until AFTER they were done preforming. Because they waited so long I got put into a coma for 2 months and my family still paying off my bill from 7 years ago
That's SO fucked. I am so sorry nobody could've been bothered to help. It's so disgusting the pride that some band directors have over a petty and irrelevant rating.
Thats fucked up Band Directors really need to know how important it is to help someone or 2 fainted they could die, get a coma and so on and so forth i dont care about your damn scores help the damn kid and get him or her some water dont step over him/her its not right to do just save the kid!!!
The thing was I was the bad guy and everyone hated me because I made our score go down and we got 2nd place because I passed out. As soon as I got out the coma and I got back to school everyone attacked me because we got 2nd at one competition.
People in my band tell us all the time, "If you faint, or trip and sprain your ankle, nobody is going to help you up, and we don't care.", I screenshotted your explanation and posted it onto the group chat that we have, and they didn't even respond, but saw it. I've collapsed before, lucky as we were getting off, and I had to army crawl the rest of the way off, because my section kept telling others not to help. ANYWAYS! THIS IS GREAT! I love that you stepped up!
+Kiyanna Martinez just because it’s good for people to not only see the video but to read what I said which is why I wrote it all up. It’s just funny and feels good to shut people up that are quick to judge without knowing the full story.
Grant band practices everyday for about 3 hours in the son and the room is only air conditioned for like once a week and we walk around with heavy instruments and there is times we forget to Drink water and the band teacher barely lets you use the restroom? We litteraly go through hell to learn songs and you have to memorize like six different songs and you have to play a really high scale P
Rs Wavy you agree with him? Band spends time in hotter weather then the football team marching band has no breaks we do not get water breaks like you guys try working your ads off and see people leave after the football game while you are still performing
A band is a team. if one of your friends are getting ill, the only way to truly win is to show that it is truly a team. Team play comes before anything else.
@@lils994 my sis is in colorgaurd and one of them locked their legs and fell onto pavement and she was the first to run out there and help Just sayin \_·-·_/
@@TheDoc98117 Yes you can. He has fainted. He would be allowed because it is a health concern. There are times where a band avo makes semi finals will not wear the jacket or hat but only the pants down. Rules are changing now days. We use to be all or none when I was in band.
@@squidknees6576 I noticed our HS band no longer follows that. They had them on but then for semi finals, they had to rush back from dinner and just went in the pants. I was like nah, I would have wanted to wear it all! But yeah, this situation is different. If someone had to step off, we always told them to unzip it and pull it down a bit.
I know this video is over two years old now, but it just popped up in my recommended. I would just like to say how amazing this is. As marchers, most of our directors have passed on such toxic attitudes to us about “if someone falls, leave them, they’re down,” but marching band is a team sport. We cannot be a team if we don’t support each other. This person obviously wasn’t getting up on their own and no one else was coming to help, so thank you for helping them when that massive band would not.
Alyssa Dominy I was a member of this band and in this performance. We had many people pass out during this performance. It was so hot. And our shows are basically DCI level because our who our director is. He’s a damn loon. People pass out all the time during performances and rehearsals.
Scott Wilson I had to resign from my position as uniform chief last season because my grandfather was sick and I wouldn’t have been able to spend as much time with him if I stayed in band. David yelled at me and treated me horribly after I handed him my resignation. So, seriously I’m glad to be away from him.
Yeah, my band director tells us the same thing but we have emt's on the sideline that rush out to get them if they fall. We aren't supposed to stop cause we lose points.
I honestly didn't believe you could faint from marching band but this proves me wrong. And that is some scary stuff I hope while I'm in marching band no one faints becuse I honestly don't know what I would have done in that situation
As a marching band kid, I've always been told the whole "you see someone down, you keep going" mindset from other students, but not my band director exactly. I'm a rather shy person, and I hate getting told off for doing something wrong. This video, however, has given me the courage to be like you. From this day onward, I will help anyone who passes out in one of my shows (not that it's happened yet, but if it does). Screw what others have to say about me for simply extending my hand when they choose not to.
There’s a toxic mindset that a lot of marching band directors (especially old ones) try to drill that’s “no matter what happens, keep marching”. Not only does that mean you keep marching if you drop your music or your pants fall off, it includes leaving a comrade behind or running into a bystander during a parade for fear of breaking line. It’s really stupid, because some directors flip a shit whenever someone holds up the line during practice, even if it’s for a good reason, so there’s that “I can’t help anyone” mindset that the marchers develop. I’m proud of you for helping. I don’t know your director, and I don’t know if they had that WHATEVER YOU DO JUST MOVE ALONG attitude, but unfortunately so many do. So glad you sacrificed your spot in line!
This has happened twice in my band and the first time it happened no one helped but the second time a lot of people helped. I don't understand how people would care more about docked points then someones well being. There are always more competitions.
@Caleb I promise the last thing I wanna do is start beef with a stranger on the internet, but that's just plain rude. Maybe these people dont know the difference between a marching band and drum corps. I didn't even know until I looked it up, and I'm IN marching band. You calling me and other people and marchers "ignorant" actually kinda hurt my feelings. Maybe instead of berating people you could just patiently explain the difference, even though that's not even the point of this video. Don't attack me it's just my opinion.
Honestly, I would've done the same thing. I'm a senior in high school and my band director tells us to look out for our fellow band mates. And btw, he was down for at least 20 seconds, which is really sad considering band, to me, is like a second family.
band is family. last year we had someone pass away the night before our big state competition. We went out and gave it our all that day and got the highest score in our high schools history. Did it all in honor for him. The best part... our show name was called “heroes fallen, not forgotten”. we played amazing grace and i’ve never cried so hard. On a day that was windy like no other, from our first step off to our last note, there was no wind whatsoever...
I think you forget the state of mind in marching band. Just b/c some one messes up and falls you don't. If something goes wrong you act like everything is fine. Now that being said, I would and also encourage some others to help some one if they faint in a show as that is very serious and they're not on the ground b/c they messed up. However under normal circumstances the show must go on and normally if other people fall even in your way you keep going. I've even been ran over and have ran over others it happens. And I've also seen this but I didn't have to stop and help myself as others were quick to. So just keep this in mind when you attempt to pass judgment on others. Esp. When you work months for scores of this one performance. And walking off the field most definitely DQ this band
Dude, as corny as it sounds, this made me cry. I have epilepsy and there were numerous times where these kind of situations happened when I was in marching band back in high school, and having people like you help out is what really makes a band family. This is kind of a late comment, but I thought I'd drop it here anyways.
For anyone who might need it later, the last thing you should do when someone passes out is to have them stand up. You should sit them upright and have them put their head between their knees. I get you couldnt exactly do that in this situation but just for future reference.
I know in marching band you are never supposed to leave your spot, and always look professional, but you truly made a huge sacrifice back there. You had the strength and courage to help your comrade in one of his most desperate time of need. You are definitely the definition of HERO. God bless you!
@Caleb chill out he's not a dumbass I didn't even know this was drum corps and I'm in the Marching band ( look up inglemoor high school marching band 2018)
I remember how hot this competition was. Fortunately, our band was either the first or second to perform, so it wasn't too hot when we were in uniform.
I mean I’m in pit and I one saw my section leader run out to the middle of the field to also help out a guy who passed out. Band kids honestly become family even though we all hate each other lmao
Honestly, that was a great move. If that was anyone else, they would have no idea what to do. Us marchers, since the very beginning, have been taught to keep the show going no matter what happens. Marching Band is way underestimated, we do a lot, and we work so hard towards perfection. It’s even harder than most sports... But High school doesn’t see it that way, we are seen as the nerds because we can read music notes, which I bet they wouldn’t even make it through the basics.
i don’t think it’s harder than any sports, but it is pretty demanding. unless you’re talking about “sports” like curling then yeah it’s harder than that😂
Even though I'm not in marching band, I do have respect for what people in marching band do because I play volleyball and I know that I cant do that even if I'm the largest perfectionist on my team do props🙌🏾
@@cakepeace3395 I ran track and I'm in Marching Band and I can soundly say that both are physically demanding, but Marching Band is more like advanced dance for musicians.
Michael Sceizina had this same thing happen. Our poor guard didn't have shoes for their uniform and they were screaming and crying throughout the show, meanwhile I felt it burning THROUGH my shoes. It was like a war zone
we've had it get so cold during parades that icicles start forming on the bottoms of woodwind instruments. we've also had parades where multiple people almost pass out.
Absolute god bro I’m a percussionist and we just had a march show yesterday and one of my drum line members blacked out due to extreme heat I helped him back to the band tent and after the show I got the same response “I was gonna help him but” it’s in my nature to help when I can and swing my best friend down like that and no one helped made me angry
Just encourage her to drink LOTS of water and to avoid her knees locking up. My fiancé is in college marching band and it can be scary (especially when you account the fact that there are over 200 people in the band). I'm sure your sister kicks ass and is doing a great job!
I did high school marching band in Texas and there were days it was too hot to be wearing a thick uniform. Drinking a ton of water and having enough food in your system helps. I'm in college marching band now in the north and I only like day performances since it's way too cold at night.
We went to a competition and 14 kids were sent to the hospital because it was 100° outside and the turf was 120°. Four of those kids were apart of our band and our uniforms are all black accept for a small red sash. My feet were burning and my best friend fell and was screaming because she was in so much pain. I hate it when people say this is easy because in reality, it's one of the toughest things you can do.
This was one of the things that I hated most about marching band was this mindset that, no matter what happened, the band was to continue on. I understand dropping your music or instrument and just leaving it there, but walking over/around someone clearly in need of help makes me so angry.
Wow I give mad props to that guy I know how hard it is to march and then he goes and helps someone that is the kind of people who we need in this world
Bro is such a legend, I remember being a rookie and almost passing out during one of our first runs in uniform, it’s crazy man, respect for getting him to safety 💪
“If you faint we will march around you” that’s the motto of my band we also have a deal with the football team that a couple big guys run out of the tunnel to pick anyone up and get them off the field and 5 seconds later the rest of the team comes out. We are a very small band of 39 anyway. Every band I have been apart of which is a lot you get punished for breaking set/ stopping to help.
Ew. They say band is like a family but I could never just casually ignore somebody passed out on the ground limp. If I was the one passed out on the ground, I would leave band. That would make me feel so beyond worthless.
If you guys seriously think that letting your bandmates suffer is better than hurting your chances of winning the competition, then you need to reassess your priorities. The performance is not worth losing a teammate. End of story.
And this kids, is why they tell you to drink more water on water breaks! Take them seriously, it isnt a time to mess around with your friends, especially if you need more water than the average person. (Gingers ect.) Good job on saving that person, you are a selfless person. Im sure they are gratefull for you. Edit: And yes, those uniforms can get VERY hot, especially in the day time, even though im only in guard i know how hot those can be because my brother has descirbed it for me. And no, im not saying guard uniforms arent hot and you shouldnt drink as much water in guard because you should.
Band/Corps uniforms: Retain no heat when it's cold, deflects no heat when it's hot. 100° on the thermometer, 120° on the turf. A message from an experienced hs band and DCI mom who has done her fair share of dragging heat exhausted kids off of fields: Drink the water even when you dont think you need it, supplement with electrolytes, protein packed snacks... and stay the fuck away from fries n' nuggs. Use enduracools when possible. Kthx. Frikkin kids. 🙄
@@laughoutgoudo1084 well, super for you in November. My kids groups (high school, college OR corps) didnt have that luxury. I'm sure they would have appreciated a little retained warmth on Friday nights.
Sad as hell to see no one else stepped in and everyone just went around him lmao those of y’all who have band directors that say that, y’all got twisted minded ass band directors. I had mine say a couple weeks ago that if we were missing games and Monday evening practices for being sick or other personal issues, like family issues, then we have our priorities set wrong. That just did it for me. I wish I had been wide awake that morning because I would have set him as straight as he thinks his priorities are.
Angelica Martinez unfortunately you are really not supposed to just stop and help the show must go on especially when it’s a real performance your supposed to march around them this young man to a big risk by doing this
John waffle WV Your bandmate’s health should matter far more than a temporary score. This man could’ve been seizing, could’ve had heat stroke, or could’ve been going through something life threatening. A field show does not matter as much as a human life.
@@annaa.9990 Could have been something worse. But, was most likely just either a fall, locking knees, or overheating. Marching band is like synchronized swimming. If one person is out, it sucks. Even more so when multiple people break the form to help someone.
even though you didnt upload this for attention i just wanna say youre like a guardian angel, if i passed out during guard and i woke up and someone just guided me off the field and helped me out i’d give them all my money
last year, our Bari sax broke her ankle during a show (not even at a competition, just a small football game) and no one, literally N O O N E helped her, I didnt know until after (due to me being on the side lines in a wheelchair and not seeing her), I wish someone would have helped, its people like you who really count, thank you for existing and doing such a good deed
Kind of the opposite but Jack State University 2016 was the coldest I have ever been. My friend (Baritone) and I (flute) were both in our member jackets, had blankets and had hot hands and we were still freezing. But the person that had it worse was the little girl sitting behind us. She was a thin little girl wearing a light jacket and that was it. She kept telling her mom she was cold and her mom couldn't do anything so she kept telling her that it would be over soon but in reality there was still two more performances and then awards. The only thing that we could do to help was to give her some of our unopened hot hands. When we asked her mom if she wanted them and explained how they worked, the look in the moms face was something I don't think either of us will ever forget. The little girl of course didn't really understand what we were talking about but the mom did and I am glad that we could help that little girl and her mom out. I don't think anyone knew that it would be that cold. We swear it got below freezing if not in the single digits. I can appreciate what you did and I hope someone would do the same for me if that ever happened. I'm from George Walton Achademy by the way.
Suga's Aegyo I was at the cedar shoals band competition , I'm in the hart county high school band , I play tuba. I'm a very large person so when we get to the competitions and it's freezing people will literally get in my jacket with me to keep them warm
andrew it's well worth it , you meet new great people. it's so much fun but you definitely have to work for it. We practiced three days a week , it's all worth the blood , yes blood😂 , sweat and tears in the end
at football games near the end of the season, I make sure to bring at least 3 sweatshirts so I can share if I need to. I also bring a 10 foot long blanket and share it with 2 other people. I've brought hot hands before too. we've had games where it got down to around 20 degrees Fahrenheit while we were sitting in the stands, and the guard freezes to death on field in their sleeveless vests.
Anna Senk What're Hot Hands? I live in South East Texas, can't relate. I just finished a game where it was in the 40s with 15mph wind and everyone was miserable. I know it barely seems like anything but for us it's something
When a football player gets hurt, everyone in the stadium stops, goes silent, gets on one knee, and cheers when they get off the field. What the hell is the difference between that and a band marcher??? Smh
Willow Sky because football injuries can be WAY worse than collapsing on the field. Pretty much all of the time it's being dehydrated, locking knees, or twisting an ankle. Football is a different story however. That's why they're treated differently
@@ta3kwondo Fainting on a field should be seen exactly as getting a cramp in the leg as a football player. Football players know the risk just like band members. Each should be treated equally with respect. If a football player fainted from exhaustion/ heat, the game would stop, so why not for a band member?
Hannah Walters football games are constantly stopping and starting. To stop for an injured player is no big deal. Competitions, however, are not something you stop and start again. For one, it would throw the the time off for every band after. Each band has a certain amount of time on the field. You can't go over this time. And it's not the performers job to help other members. There should be band boosters or athletic trainers on the sideline ready to help people, just like football. It's not about showing respect. It's just not feasible to stop the show for one member.
Double standards man it's double standards like these that I just hate living on this cruel world. We all try our best in these sports and should be treated equally! We band players deserve respect
because the band has spent their entire season preparing for competitions like this. They cant just stop what they're doing, if one person breaks formation and helps that fine, but in the competition owlrd, she show must go on under all circumstances.
I’ve seen this happen too many times in my band while marching. Thankfully a director, a judge, or someone who wasn’t marching saw and got them off the field immediately. It’s scary to experience and just as scary to watch. You just see the person go down and have no idea what is happening. What makes it even scarier is that sometimes you don’t even know they go down until after the performance is over. I’m sure that everyone has been told at one point or another to “not stop for anything”, but if something like this happens, you should stop and help. Whether it be in practice or a competition, something like this should be taken care of as soon as possible. You shouldn’t march past the person and leave them there. That decision reflects badly on you. And while I’m sure people have their own reasons for marching past the person this has happened to, I don’t believe it to be right. The whole band is in this together and every decision you make reflects positively or negatively on the entire band. I believe that your decision to help this person instead of leaving him there reflects positively on your band and what kind of person you are. I know many people would not have the courage to step out of the drill and do what you did. It was a very courageous thing to do. Thank you for everything you did to help this person.
That is why we are called a family in marching band and drum corps. When one’s in need there will always be someone there to pick you up when you fall! That young man was absolutely amazing and I love how he didn’t even think just acted. Kudos to that young man!
It is more someone has to have an instrument that is a size that allows them to be able to pick him up and get him off the field. And then secondly The marchers who passed out is extremely tall. Someone my height wouldn’t be able to get him off the field. Then someone would have to notice him. There are 500 people of the field and he’s back field.
I’m in AFJROTC, and we had this one cadet faint while we were running, so... I decided to stop running, and help him finish the mile instead of getting my PR. So, I guess you could say that Band and ROTC both have something in common... We both care for one another, and when one of our brethren fall, we must help them up and do what we can to finish the job. No matter if it means stopping a competition, or a performance to help them. YOU MUST HELP NO MATTER WHAT, OR IT WILL COME BACK TO BITE YOU IN THE FUTURE!!!
Ummm i dont think you've read the other comments here. Band is apparently "you faint and we walk over you" kinda mentality braught to the students by band directors.
That's fine in afjrotc. I did that for my AFROTC unit. But in marching band, it's very controversial to do this. I understand that you can't have 20 people stop to help the guy, but SOMEONE has to.
@@cadenorris4009 these people are completely brainwashed it's insane. a competition/sport made up by humans, scores being written on a thin piece of paper that won't even matter in the future is more important than saving a human being's life..."we're not supposed to" so because some other human tells you not to assist another human being that's suffering, you're going to listen to them? i hope people like this get a taste of their own medicine. then they'll see the true value of protocol, a concept made up by ordinary beings to keep others under control.
_And they say it isnt a sport_ Anways Its really stupid about the whole "Dont help someone who has fallen" thing. Like what the heck Its a human being oh my god Edit:Wow thats alot of likes Also if this seemed too agressive im sorry lol.
@@saintcel51 I would definitely say it's a sport. There is so much sweat, time, effort, and teamwork that goes into this. If golf is considered a sport and all you're doing is swinging a club, marching band (whether at a highschool or college level), far surpasses the term.
As a former band kid, this was awesomeness in action. We will never what that voice inside the ‘rescuer’ said to make him break formation to help another band mate. But what he did was nothing short of spectacular. I hope the one who fainted was okay.
I did this once during a run through at the end of a practice. A freshman trumpet player fainted and everyone just kept going. I ran, picked her up with my sousaphone still on me and brought her to the sideline to get water. I'd do it again if I had to but bottom line is. You can never have too much H2O
I’m so touched by this! No matter what, a person’s life is worth more than any performance you will ever do. I have so much respect for you, and I only wish the world can follow in your footsteps! Band is tough and this kind of stuff does happen, this is something that should happen more...not the buts or the “I was going to...” Thank you for sharing!
Comment section is completely funny at this point full of arguing whether this is Drum Corps or Marching band and arguing over if the person who helped should have or not which is dumb.
It's called straight leg technique. It's not locked, but as straight as possible. Some bands are starting to change to the bent leg technique like what SCV and a few other drum corps use because it isn't as hard on your knees.
Shiny 428 Sup another freshman. Idk man idk. My band does straight leg technique as well. Just know your limits and signs of fainting. Drink plenty of water (of course) and sit out when needed. That’s what I did in summer band. CURSE YOU HEAT AND HUMIDITY!!!!! Edit: I misread your comment whoops lol
I get “the show must go on” but wth! I’m in marching band, and if that were to have happened to someone on the field I would have left my set to help them ( not all hero’s were capes, mine wear plumes)
@@Shadow_1923 this kind of mindset is why the world is in such a poor state today. made up rewards over a human being's life. life, something trillions more valuable than some human made concept.
This is true, I'm a freshman this year and we had someone trip and go down when we were at a rehearsal thankfully the director was watching that area and was able to stop us before someone backed up into him and cause a "TH-cam fail" moment or ended up getting a lot of people hurt.. he didn't pass out or anything but his clarinet jabbed the top of his mouth and he injured his wrist really badly, I had spoken to him the next time I saw him and he said he was absolutely terrified that a brass or drum line member was gonna run him over cause trombones, sousaphones and the quads were all backing in that general area at the fastest point in the show
who cares if this is a competition he could even seriously hurt I am in marching band I actually struggle with bulimia one performance i fainted and I remember waking up to kids literally marching over me. I know in the description you said its not to brag but good for you man, not everyone would do that
I wish I had the courage to do this the other day. We were premiering our show and it was dark outside and during one set my friend (clarinet) and I (flute) have to push these big heavy props on deflated wheels across the pad and when I got to that set my friend was sobbing and when I asked why apparently her knee popped out of place and she was in so much pain and I didn’t know what to do because your never supposed to leave formation so I told her to push through for another 20 sets (about) and the second we ended I carried her off the field before my director even called us to relax. It was the bravest thing I’ve ever done, just because your told never to leave formation. Even if someone passes out, you march over them. But I wish I wouldn’t have pushed her to finish the show and I wish I would’ve helped her off the field mid rep.
I remember a month ago during practice when I nearly fainted. We were practicing our sets when all of the sudden I started to feel ill and my vision became fuzzy to the point which I lost my balance at one point. I regained coordination for a short time, however, it started to get worse to the point which I felt my eyes roll back and I nearly fainted. Luckily, one of the sousaphone players in my section pushed me to the sidelines. Turns out the cause of me nearly fainting was due to dehydration. So as a tip, always ALWAYS drink LOTS of water before or during practice.
Yep it's happened to me once a few times as well but I'm a have to get some bigger water drivers and how to keep it cool and to eat more just that this is my first year and didn't know much of it but I will make sure to keep pushing until the end of the year and decide to keep playing or do something else but I'm a keep drinking water just that i was outside most of the day and yep it cause me to pass out with the drum in me and yeep my head started hurting but I'm doing better just that next if that ever happens I'm a have to just step aside in case if I ever feel like I can't stand ,but like u said I felt like vision was getting blurry and for me the music was getting lower and lower until i lost balance and I fell But right now I'm ok and still being better in trying to stay hydrated and from all the movements ok Take care pal 👍✨
I’ve had a situation like this before during our first competition it was like 90 degrees(lovely boiling springs South Carolina right) and I passed out halfway through. No one helped me but instead just marched around me. The person that helped me was the drum major. No one else because they were “too focused on performing” or “didn’t want to let my section down”. The point of this is if a situation like this arises, help the f*** out of that person because it’s the right thing to do. If you get yelled at by your BD, they can get over it. Rant over😅😅
No my guy I marched 4 years in Florida and never passed out cause I drank water, not only that but you dont stop the performance for anything, ESPECIALLY a competition like yall actin like he was gonna die, that kid should have got his bearings and moved out of the form to avoid breaking the picture but instead he played there for 20 seconds. He gave up, in Drum corps they would not have stopped so why should they have stopped if you are about to pass out it's your own responsibility to get out of the form, nobody else should have to do it for you. He also moved other people out of the form. Breaking protocol on several different levels.
Pretty much every time someone falls on the field, it was something easily preventable. It sounds to me that you didn't take care of yourself beforehand, and decided instead to blame everyone but yourself. Hydrate or diedrate.
I have the utmost respect for you. Marching band is insanely taxing on you and I am so glad that you helped a brother out. You are the reason there is still good in this world. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. - A High School Alto Sax Player
There was a band member in my high school marching band who fainted during a competition. I ended up helping them, and luckily that person didn't get trampled on. We ended up getting second place.
There's no such thing as a momentary lack of integrity. Having a momentary lack of integrity means you don't have integrity. You my friend, have integrity.
Nicole Likes Hetalia our uniforms are like 70% black and 30% blue and gold, and we march in southern Florida heat during the hottest months of summer 😅😅 idk how we haven't had someone like die, but I'm lucky bc I don't even march, although I have thrown up from the heat because of the uniforms
Lol, we went to Clarksville this year for boa, and I've never sweated so much in my life, it was a really good first performance but since our uniforms are literally 98% black with a little bit of royal blue, it did not feel great haha
Coming from someone who almost fainted granted, during practice not a competition, thank you for helping. It means a lot to go out of your way to save someone.
I think that is beautiful. I just had my first marching competition today and we made a 2. I put on my Snapchat story that I was so proud of the band for making a 2! After that, a bunch of freshmen (I'm an 8th grader) told me that I didn't care and I shouldn't be happy and that I need to take the post down and ect. After that I was trying not to cry while I told them at least we didn't make a 3. They got in trouble, and I re posted that I was proud! I hope there are a lot more people like you! You made a big difference that day, and so did I! I hope there will be more people like us to stand up for what's right and make a difference in this world!
I personally don't think I'd help cuz my teacher is rlly intimidating and says u cant stop for anything. I also have a bari saxophone so it would be impossible to kneel down and help someome who is on the ground. But you were really selfless to help that kid out :)
soybeans I’d much rather have my director yell at me or kick me out of band than leave someone and risk him getting run over and potentially messing things up, or maybe even worse, he can get hospitalized.
Yeah. I mean, who knows. This person could've been having a stroke or something happening to them, and they would've left there in the sun. I'm glad someone stopped to help.
soybeans If it is something small like tripping and getting back up, running into someone, or dropping your horn you still have to go on no matter what, but when it becomes a risk to someone's life then that is a valid reason to stop.
Realistically though you would probably not be kicked out, especially if the drill has already been written. Unless you are in a huge massive band, unlike me.
One time at BOA, I had finished performing and we were watching other bands and this kid had a seizure on the field and his friend came and shielded him from the other marchers who were not aware yet. The parents ran onto the field to help him and get him off the field and since the judges at BOA are super strict, THEY DOCKED THEM POINTS FOR HELPING HIM OFF THE FIELD. Judges at BOA and ISSMA are brutal but props to everyone who has helped a fellow marcher on the field. I always say put your fellow marchers first and the show second
I'm not a band director but I am a instructor who helps a lot of bands. I would be super proud of that student to help. I would probably even run out on the field to help.
A person life is better than continue to match, end of story. Love this man, all respects due to him and the ones that have gotten injured (from the comments I’ve seen).
A COUPLE THINGS:
1) This is a college exhibition show, not a high school
2) I know you were probably told just “march over people” that went down
3) If you’re wondering why there are hardly any views on a video with nearly 2 million views, there used to be thousands of comments. I set the video to private by mistake not realizing it would remove all the comments so now the comment section is empty.
Enjoy the video. Be a good person.

"march over people"
yeah, let's march over johnny, an 18 year old who fainted and is getting trampled.
What college
@@jackmoseley1628I'm am fairly sure that that is the most ridiculous thing I've heard about band.

Absolutely no problem! I did what I would have wanted other people do do. When they didn’t I knew I had to do something. More than happy to help 😊
Why the quotation marks it makes you sound like you are being sarcastic
The quotations are meant to emphasize that it was a rescue and not just someone who didnt care dragging someone off the field to get them out of the way. Rescue as in having compassion and making sure the person was ok and getting the necessary help. As for stepping up...its because no one else did and is emphasizing that at least Scott did. I totally get the quotations as there is nothing hard to understand about it and is not sarcasm.
Life Talk - Upper Midwest That’s not how you use quotations, btw, but yknow.
I mean this a little bit different because he fainted and fell. 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
The show must go on lol 🤘
Well actually, in my band, the coaches always asks the team wether that we are ready or not before the performance. Its a mistake if you force yourself for the show. You better just take a rest because the risk is what's in that video might happen.
Wether you're a drum corps or a marching band, our main goal is to perform the best show. That's why we're tought to cover up our mistakes and improvise.
But if its practice session, i believe that the coaches will stop the session for a period of time to help that player
Well I mean who is more important. Y'all there just cause y'all there. But I'm pretty sure football niggas are more important than band niggas. Lmao

Moral of this: 👏🏻Make 👏🏻Marching 👏🏻Band👏🏻a 👏🏻Sport 👏🏻
Thats a lot of breathing from playing, moving around, & the heat
Pomfiyon it’s not a sport , because of dumb rules like these .
Wearing warm clothes in hot weather while playing music and moving around a little isn't a sport.
Marching band is my life but personally I don’t think it’s a sport it more of a performing art.
The band ur in is like a second family if u don’t help them it’s like saying u would not save a family member from death and it makes me mad bc like I said it’s ur family u have to help family screw competition marks help ur band mates first
I have people in my band that if they passed out and I helped them and we got docked points there’d be pissed about it
DragonLover 3690 I agree, only one or two people need to help and often times it’s not to serious but if what happened is life threatening, I think the whole band should stop because that persons life is more important than a score. And if it’s at a game or something when your just playing on the sideline, someone should stop and make sure they’re ok and then help them best they can
meanwhile my marching band is like "injured? keep marching"
ps: that was real heroic of you all people should be like that. that person could be dying
same😭
This is relatable
They were not going to stop the whole thing for just this reason.
jinnie eats
When I worked the city day parades with the PD, there were 5ft troughs of water along the route.
Well I appreciate it! Just trying to do what was right and what no one else seemed to be willing to do 😊
Sorry to say but I felt bad for the guy 2 but it was more selfish 2 help him cause u just effected the WHOLE band
Ethan McKelroy
Are you kidding me, kid?

Because they waited so long I got put into a coma for 2 months and my family still paying off my bill from 7 years ago
That's SO fucked. I am so sorry nobody could've been bothered to help. It's so disgusting the pride that some band directors have over a petty and irrelevant rating.
Thats fucked up Band Directors really need to know how important it is to help someone or 2 fainted they could die, get a coma and so on and so forth i dont care about your damn scores help the damn kid and get him or her some water dont step over him/her its not right to do just save the kid!!!
omg i'm so sorry
I liked your comment but I don't like what happened to you.
He’s definitely a loon which is a big part why I’m not marching anymore 😅
That’s our director for you. Good old David Starnes.
You’ll get docked points during judged performances for doing that.
Al Harrington At that point I would think the well-being of one of their own members would be more important than getting a specific placement.
Acacia Sterling the thing is we were competing. We were performing in exhibition for the crowd as we are a university band
This has happened twice in my band and the first time it happened no one helped but the second time a lot of people helped. I don't understand how people would care more about
docked points then someones well being. There are always more competitions.
Wtf I didn’t know a marching band was so serious that you weren’t allowed to help people who faint lol.
Marching band is brutal
@Caleb I promise the last thing I wanna do is start beef with a stranger on the internet, but that's just plain rude. Maybe these people dont know the difference between a marching band and drum corps. I didn't even know until I looked it up, and I'm IN marching band. You calling me and other people and marchers "ignorant" actually kinda hurt my feelings. Maybe instead of berating people you could just patiently explain the difference, even though that's not even the point of this video. Don't attack me it's just my opinion.
@Caleb *know the
*when
Be sure to berate people with proper spelling if you are berating them about not knowing the difference between two things :)
Caleb Btw drum corps IS marching band, but marching band is NOT drum corps. It is like saying geometry is math, but math is not geometry.
Caleb Yes, and that is why the commenter must be informed appropriately and efficiently.
I hope I'd be able to do that during a competition. Takes guts to break formation in the middle of a show. Definitely earned my respect
Lucas Walters well actually I’d hope no one would ever have to experience that!
Especially during A competing, I would be too scared 😓
This warms my heart, cause as a person in marching band, I know you’re not allowed to stop marching for someone who passes out.
Honestly, I would've done the same thing. I'm a senior in high school and my band director tells us to look out for our fellow band mates. And btw, he was down for at least 20 seconds, which is really sad considering band, to me, is like a second family.
Randi Abel yea today people were being mean to me after competition. I posted on Snapchat that I thought we were supposed to be a family
band is family. last year we had someone pass away the night before our big state competition.
Stephen Sharp wow man that’s all I know to say but I felt like I needed to say something
Stephen Sharp that’s very sweet! Amazing!
Proud of you, Scott. I'm sure the guy that you helped up and moved safely definitely appreciated it as well.
Thank you Hannah ☺️ can't imagine doing that daily throughout band camp though!
Dude, as corny as it sounds, this made me cry. I have epilepsy and there were numerous times where these kind of situations happened when I was in marching band back in high school, and having people like you help out is what really makes a band family. This is kind of a late comment, but I thought I'd drop it here anyways.
That’s so awesome 😊 I appreciated the comment so much, doesn’t matter if it’s late!
Plz don’t say corny
Caleb ...this is a college marching band (PotM) not drum corps, dumbass.
I fainted at a practice and people marched on and around me. That was a practice and no where near a competition. Good job
my director says that only one person should break off to help them off the field.
I remember how hot this competition was. Fortunately, our band was either the first or second to perform, so it wasn't too hot when we were in uniform.
Yeah, it was awful! Hopefully, that doesn't happen again!
Temperature wise, amazing! Competitive wise, I'd rather go last lol

I mean I'm garbo at my instrument so really it's more of a endurance test than a field show for me, but yeah I agree.
i don’t think it’s harder than any sports, but it is pretty demanding. unless you’re talking about “sports” like curling then yeah it’s harder than that😂
Even though I'm not in marching band, I do have respect for what people in marching band do because I play volleyball and I know that I cant do that even if I'm the largest perfectionist on my team do props🙌🏾

Michael Sceizina it was so hot! Thank you for watching! :)
One time we could feel ourselves sliding, and another time some kid got a 2nd degree burn bc of the turf

Was he playing tenors, bass (if so 1,2
2, 3, 4, or 5), or snare
This is why I’m scared for my sister when she goes to catching competitions during the day
Just encourage her to drink LOTS of water and to avoid her knees locking up. My fiancé is in college marching band and it can be scary (especially when you account the fact that there are over 200 people in the band).
I'm sure your sister kicks ass and is doing a great job!

I hate having competitions during the day, it way to hot
I did high school marching band in Texas and there were days it was too hot to be wearing a thick uniform. Drinking a ton of water and having enough food in your system helps. I'm in college marching band now in the north and I only like day performances since it's way too cold at night.
We went to a competition and 14 kids were sent to the hospital because it was 100° outside and the turf was 120°. Four of those kids were apart of our band and our uniforms are all black accept for a small red sash. My feet were burning and my best friend fell and was screaming because she was in so much pain. I hate it when people say this is easy because in reality, it's one of the toughest things you can do.
our drillmasters melted once at a competition

“If you faint we will march around you” that’s the motto of my band we also have a deal with the football team that a couple big guys run out of the tunnel to pick anyone up and get them off the field and 5 seconds later the rest of the team comes out. We are a very small band of 39 anyway. Every band I have been apart of which is a lot you get punished for breaking set/ stopping to help.
In my marching band if you faint then they can run you over. Like March ON you.
I have an even smaller band of 20 so I refuse to let someone just lay on the field passed out and let people walk on them
Obviously you guys I’ve never been to a sports event because you ain’t got time to stop and fucking help people. Get your priorities in order

Good one and bless you for helping your fellow band mate to safety, thank you if no one thanked you.
Proof that their are still good people on this planet

We were practicing our sets when all of the sudden I started to feel ill and my vision became fuzzy to the point which I lost my balance at one point. I regained coordination for a short time, however, it started to get worse to the point which I felt my eyes roll back and I nearly fainted. Luckily, one of the sousaphone players in my section pushed me to the sidelines. Turns out the cause of me nearly fainting was due to dehydration. So as a tip, always ALWAYS drink LOTS of water before or during practice.
Yep it's happened to me once a few times as well but I'm a have to get some bigger water drivers and how to keep it cool and to eat more just that this is my first year and didn't know much of it but I will make sure to keep pushing until the end of the year and decide to keep playing or do something else but I'm a keep drinking water just that i was outside most of the day and yep it cause me to pass out with the drum in me and yeep my head started hurting but I'm doing better just that next if that ever happens I'm a have to just step aside in case if I ever feel like I can't stand ,but like u said I felt like vision was getting blurry and for me the music was getting lower and lower until i lost balance and I fell
But right now I'm ok and still being better in trying to stay hydrated and from all the movements ok
Take care pal 👍✨

The point of this is if a situation like this arises, help the f*** out of that person because it’s the right thing to do. If you get yelled at by your BD, they can get over it. Rant over😅😅
Damn, I feel lucky that I don't live in those terribly hot southern states. Greetings from Michigan!
We need more people like you in this world. :)
I have the utmost respect for you. Marching band is insanely taxing on you and I am so glad that you helped a brother out. You are the reason there is still good in this world. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

There was a band member in my high school marching band who fainted during a competition. I ended up helping them, and luckily that person didn't get trampled on. We ended up getting second place.
There's no such thing as a momentary lack of integrity.
Having a momentary lack of integrity means you don't have integrity.
You my friend, have integrity.
xInsane ok so everyone but this one dude lacks integrity? Alright
kinda sad that they’re uniforms are black
on a hot ass day
Nicole Likes Hetalia our uniforms are like 70% black and 30% blue and gold, and we march in southern Florida heat during the hottest months of summer 😅😅 idk how we haven't had someone like die, but I'm lucky bc I don't even march, although I have thrown up from the heat because of the uniforms
Lol, we went to Clarksville this year for boa, and I've never sweated so much in my life, it was a really good first performance but since our uniforms are literally 98% black with a little bit of royal blue, it did not feel great haha
Nicole Likes Hetalia kek I live on florida and our uniforms are 100% black except for a white band going down our uniform and the gauntlets and gloves
Our uniforms are entirely black except for a streak of maroon and white on the front. We're in Texas.
JammerPlays I was at that boa with you!
Coming from someone who almost fainted granted, during practice not a competition, thank you for helping. It means a lot to go out of your way to save someone.
“Marching band isn’t hard”
Obviously your not doing it right if its not hard
Slender Dog not really
Slender Dog whoosh

In my band if I did that to help someone I’d get chewed out for not going on
Great job helping another in need instead of just looking away

If it is something small like tripping and getting back up, running into someone, or dropping your horn you still have to go on no matter what, but when it becomes a risk to someone's life then that is a valid reason to stop.

You're teacher needs to learn some compassion. Maybe show them this video?
Realistically though you would probably not be kicked out, especially if the drill has already been written. Unless you are in a huge massive band, unlike me.
this was actually pretty scary to watch 💀 when people faint it scares the shit out of me. literally my only fear!!
As much as I applaud you for helping him, I cannot help but wonder how the rest of your band, including you band director, replied to your action.
Honestly, bless this guy for helping a fellow band member!! ❤❤ I think for me it proves how much of a family marching band can be!!
I straight up almost cried happy tears hope the dude is ok and back at it!
I'm not a band director but I am a instructor who helps a lot of bands. I would be super proud of that student to help. I would probably even run out on the field to help.
A person life is better than continue to match, end of story. Love this man, all respects due to him and the ones that have gotten injured (from the comments I’ve seen).
