    An interesting video as always Ralph. I know when I started to print my photographs it made me think more about the end result including the aspect ratio. More than I already was doing. My camera has very few options to view the aspect ratio in camera before taking the photograph. To get a bit more precise I have start to play around with a device called a view catcher which can be set to different aspect ratios to view a scene. I find it better and less distracting to use than a phone app that I have.

      Glad you found it interesting. My earlier cameras had no way to preview different aspect ratios so I became quite good at visualising them without any kind of aid. I just need to think more about printing when I'm composing the image. Thank you for watching and commenting

    Blimey Ralph , talk about timing i,ve just acquired a canon pro 10 printer from my local camera club and watching this will open my eyes for future printing projects, so thank you for sharing this with us. Have a great week and see you next Saturday

      Nice acquisition. The Pro 10 is a bit more upscale than my little G650. I'm sure you'll have great fun with it. Thank you for watching and commenting and have a great week yourself

    That was an interesting subject Ralph and worth taking on board when capturing an image if you are going to print and in what size. I do like the 7-5 that seems to work for me and the odd 16-9 thank you for that prospective. 👍👌👏

    What a great topic Ralph, thank you for starting the conversation. I have noticed more and more my images are 16:9 mainly now I think of it as I am biased towards cropping for TH-cam. When someone wants a print I always send my preferred aspect ration (be that 4:3, 3:2 or 1:1) for them to compare before making a final decision. As for framing I have a few framers on call... some very expensive and some nearer the budget end. Oh and I really do love a high quality aluminium print, then you can dispense with a frame altogether 😂

      Glad you liked the topic Izzy. The printing game is new to me, I've always had my printing done externally before and I'm only printing for personal use now. I've looked at some framing options around here and they all seem very expensive for what I want, for bigger stuff I will probably stick to the metal prints but I'm enjoying doing the smaller stuff for at home. Nice video Ralph. Printing your own photos is indeed something that provides an extra level of satisfaction but can also give you headaches. I have been printing for years on an old Canon Pixma Pro9000 Mark II which a member of a local photo club did not need any longer and gave it to me (as i was the first to react to his offer). The printer was introduced in 2009, but it has been as reliable as all the Toyota cars that we have driven over the years. Unfortunately, for a while now Canon is not providing drivers for this printer anymore for the new versions of the OS on Macs (and PCs I believe). In addition, the ink for this printers are increasingly difficult to find. Hence, the perfectly-functioning printer has become a very heavy paperweight. In fact, I am awaiting the arrival of a new Canon Pixma Pro 200 which was on sale a few days ago and will fill the void.
    As a (primarily) wildlife photographer, I do a lot of cropping. While there is certainly a significant amount of composing while taking the photo, there is virtually always a significant amount of cropping needed for the best result at the end. I typically aim at a final print size of 8x10 or 11x14 using mats of 11x14 and 16x20 respectively as those are sizes for which (here in the US at least) it is easy to find (affordable) frames. Funny enough, when I started playing around with my old Canon AE1 film camera, I quickly realized that there are virtually no frames available in the local stores that allow framing (with or without mat) in that aspect ratio...... weird......

      Glad you enjoyed it Andy. The printer I have felt like it would be a good learning platform and, if I really get into printing, I will probably upgrade it at some point, not for a while yet. The Pro 200 looks like a great printer and is probably what I would go for if I wanted something bigger and more capable. I may well look at alternative frame sizes and print aspect ratios at some point, although that will also mean starting to trim the prints as well. Thank you for watching and commenting

    Something i fail to do as much as i should is print my images , the 16:9 i think has come about because thats the aspect ratio of most modern TVs and monitors so its easy to compose an image knowing that it will all appear in the frame its something else to think about shooting wider than we require in order to crop to the correct aspect ratio, I suspect this is something you develop over time with practice so i look forward to seeing your printing journey !

      I'm enjoying the printing process so far. I agree with the thoughts on 16:9 although I do alos like it as a way to make a scene look wider and potential avoid boring skies or untidy foregrounds. Thank you for watching and commenting

    Yes! Somehow finding affordable photo frames in a size fitting to a print ratio is the hardest part.

      Yes. I know if some people who have gone in for making their own frames but that's not cheap either. Thank you for watching and commenting

    It is always very difficult to match some ratios with available ready-made frames, particularly with the 16x9 size. I tend to buy some bespoke frames over the internet these days and I am really pleased with the result.

      @RalphGoldsmith  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some bespoke frames might be the way to go in the future but makes it harder to swap images around (which I want to do). Thank you for watching and commenting

    I store A4 prints that I have taken down in empty printer paper boxes :) Also since I got my printer I stopped cropping in post. I'm now all about getting it right in camera with keeping in mind that I'm gonna print the image. I got an A3+ printer and would love to print some A3+ stuff but there's virtually 0 frames for A3+ available.

      @RalphGoldsmith  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great tip on the storage. I tend to favour third party metal prints for larger stuff, no need to frame. Thank you for watching and commenting

      I print a lot on A3+ paper but typically at 11x14. I use 16x20 mats as there is a plethora of 16x20 frames available in the stores around me (in the US)

      @@andywesselsphotographyart thanks for the tip. I'll look up if those are common here, too.
