- James Carville & Al Hunt discuss the current presidential race, focusing on the dynamics between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. They analyze the economic factors influencing voter perception, particularly the impact of unemployment rates and inflation. The discussion also highlights the importance of campaign strategies, emphasizing the need for a consistent daily messaging approach to effectively communicate the risks associated with Trump's economic policies, particularly tariffs.

"Trumpflation!" That's the word we need to describe both tariffs and mass deportations.
Maybe "Tarifflation" would be better. Much as I dislike him, the voters that are persuadable are going to see "Trumpflation" as an attack on Trump, where what might be needed is something that highlights his bad policies.
THERE IS HISTORY FOR THIS TYPE OF TARIFFS--- IT IS CALLED THE GREAT DEPRESSION
Tariffs are what Herbert Hoover tried to save the economy. How did that work out?
200% tariff on John Deere. Unbelievable.
And, let's not forget the 10% - 20% on all imports and an extra 60% on Chinese imports. 🙄
Tariffs add cost…plain and simple…higher cost…means higher inflation.
Tariffs were a major contributor to the Great Depression. I think that the media is doing our nation a disservice by not doing some reporting about that. Our schools don't teach history very well.
The words "Trump's Great Depression Tariff Policy" should be coming out of every Democrat's mouth in every economic campaign event from now until Election Day. People don't need to know much about history to know what the Great Depression was.
@@thesquirrelchase-exploreph5635 Trump takes advantage of lack of knowledge to push bad policies. The 1929 stock market crash and "The Great Depression" aren't the same event and the damage done by tariffs likely stretched out the economic pain for years longer than it had to.
@@alphabrainwave But they do need to know how it was brought about; the mechanics of it.
@@virginiaoflaherty2983 Yes, that can supplement it, but democrats need to use simple language to their advantage to reach the small slice of undecided or persuadable voters who tend to be less tuned in to politics and economics. They should also take the advice of history and borrow FDR's terms 'competitive tariffs' and 'prohibitive tariffs' to explain why and how Biden has continued some of Trump's tariffs, as that is a counter-argument his supporters might make.
I certainly hope Team Harris is listening, too.
Yes. The Harris campaign needs to stop calling it a tax increase without explaining tariffs lead to higher prices.
James, Yeah; tariffs are crap for American consumers. Thanks from Seattle.
But they may help American manufacturing and workers.
I will be voting for Harris because of the economy. The 2016 Trump is not the same as the Trump we have now. I am actually terrified for the economy if he gets back in. His proposals do not seem well thought out and he does not seem to grasp basic economic principles.
you should be a bit more terrified than just worrying about the economy. HOw does Trump hold an advantage on economy when it is doing better under BIden? like wtf dumb people
@@didmooretheundone2299 His economic "ideas" seem to be on par with what you'd expect from a 7th grader. The problem is that most Americans don't have enough knowledge to see through the BS and realize Trump's policies aren't common-sense, they're common-stupid.
He didn't in 2017-2020 either darlin'.
I went shopping and my bill went down 8 bucks since last time I shopped, same things... So, YES is it getting better..
"The higher industrial tariffs go, my friends, the greater is the burden of the farmer. ... It was a stupid, blundering idea, and we know it today and we know it has brought disaster."
- Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Sioux City, Iowa, September 29, 1932
James is right! The farmers of South Dakota suffered the fallout of Trump's tariffs the last time he was in office. Trump's "bailout help" all went to corporate farms and left family farms out in the cold! It was so bad we lost some good farmers. RIP to the good people we lost.
But a lot of the farmers in South Dakota will most likely vote for trump and trump will win the state. I live near a town and the local bar (owned by a farmer) is waving the trump flag proudly.
Maybe that was the plan. Why is land all over the west being scarfed up by tech bros, and investment NOT from the US. So we are selling our land to China, Saudi Arabia and other great allies of the US. Think about that. Why does your house cost that much? Why does land in relatively uninhabited states cost so much?
It's price gouging local and corporate we know where trump stands
Under trump’s tariff policy foreign governments would impose tariffs on U.S. products. Under his theory of who pays the tariffs, the U.S. government would have to pay huge sums to China, for example, for any of the products exported by the US to China.
Hard hitting. I liked the notion of ' what have you got to lose? " talk of Trump is... when directly seen for what they are - nonsense, that the Harris team should hammer on that. For me, any threatening change to the current Healthcare system ( Donald " I have a concept of a plan.. } is a hot button to me certainly.
Captain Butthurt must be so surrounded by 'yes men' that no one will tell him he doesn't understand tariffs.
I sure hope the Harris/Walz campaign is listening to Carville!!!
I am greatly invested in the stock market. Under Trump I lost money. Since Biden came in my portfolio has gone up six figures. Keep Trump away from my money.
Me too! Though Wall Street is claiming Trump was great for them. Ignore the fact the markets are breaking records. If this entire economy and stock market was under Trump's presidency and he was running as an incumbent, corporate media would be saying he created the 8th wonder of the world.
So glad you have 6 figure investments.
@@virginiaoflaherty2983 I worked my ass off for that money. I was a humble self employed carpenter with a family. I invested little by little. It did not come easy and I’m sorry if I came across as anything else. I only made mention to contrast the economic differences between Biden/Harris and Trump and how it affects a tradesman such as myself.
@@virginiaoflaherty2983 You are aware people invest their money, correct? Or were you being sarcastic because you felt that was a way for you to lash out?
He was making a point, because Trump claims the stock market is down and was better under his horrible presidency.
I didn't take what he posted as bragging. He didn't say how many hundreds of thousand he made on investments.
When a market goes up rapidly breaking historical highs, many people make six figure returns. I have friends who've made seven to eight figure returns. They've earned a lot through their work and invested when the market was low and rode it out until it went back up.
My wife and I both invested money separately prior to getting married and together for 25 years. We sacrificed a lot to save for a debt free future retirement, along with sending our kids to college without student loans.
The stock market under Joe Biden has quadrupled since Trump was president and hit record highs. If you had money in the broad stock market indexes, you made a good deal of money. However, if the market suddenly goes down, you can lose a lot or most of those Fl gains.
That's a total lie. Anyone who invests in their 401k or IRA is investing. It doesn't mean they're super rich. Also, when you invest, you're not spending money on cars you don't need etc..
Tarriffs are bad enough, but what Trump has said is that he wants to replace revenue from income tax with revenue from tarriffs.
I hope Jimmy has a hotline to the Harris campaign

@@rhondah1587 I'm not someone who is optimistic about the election. I believe even if Trump doesn't win through votes the corrupt apparatus of the Republican party will manage to send it to the courts to decide and I've lost faith in our justice system. If it worked the way it should we wouldn't even be dealing with this right now. America will have to deal with Trump the hard way and will suffer a self-inflicted wound.
A 200% tariff on John Deere equipment is Trump’s Quid pro quo.
James...just bring up the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act (1930) passed during the Hoover Administration triggered the Great Depression. Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act significantly worsened the American economy during the Great Depression by drastically reducing international trade through high tariffs, leading to retaliatory tariffs from other countries, which ultimately decreased U.S. exports and further depressed the economy. Trump is trying to do the same thing.
You are EXACTLY right!
We indeed have a lot to lose , the main thing is Trump being stupid and occupying the oval office again would only further erode our Democracy.
If trump gets back in the white house Democracy won't just erode, it will disappear completely .

I do hope the Dems speak more on Farmers/ AG issues during the rest of this campaign . Thank you. 🔵
Does nobody remember the Smoot-Hawley Act of 1930 from history class in high school? And why is nobody talking about it? What they are talking about with tariffs is exactly what the Smoot-Hawley Act did. Granted it started out as tariffs on foreign farm goods but after Congress got done, it kinda went crazy. The trade war that ensued was a disaster. You know that DT will propose tariffs on some things, Congress will jump in and jack it up more and we'll be off to the races. Just like in 1930- did we learn nothing. Apparently, DT never learned this lesson at Wharton.
I remember it from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The lesson from the famous "Bueller... Bueller..." scene was on this topic. I hope Harris can frame this in a more interesting way than Ben Stein did.
She should just make a commercial to run in agricultural areas..."Trump is insisting on putting tariffs on every import (cut to a few clips of Trump insisting tariffs are his whole plan) -- explain how tariffs are passed on to American consumers -- say how much a 20% increase on a refrigerator and a 200% tariff on a basic John Deere tractor would cost -- end with 'Trump wants to make it hard for your family and friends to get by. Can you afford another Trump presidency?'".
am terrified that Trump will prevail; there is so much that is not making the news. My husband is a retired military officer, and a pilot, and I see so many exchanges about not necessarily pro-Trump, but 'anti-socialism/communism," pro 2nd amendment, voting for Trump-aligned SC justices ('whose only agenda is following the Constitution...?'). These comments are from retired Lt. Col, etc., from all branches. And, there are a whole lot of them. For the life of me, I do not see how they do not consider Trump and his next administration a threat, especially officers, but there you have it. The surprise will be the mass voters for Trump; they are keeping their cards close to their vest. The only solution I see is every voting age woman, and like-minded men, to vote for Kamala. Supposedly, women voters outnumber men?
Intellectually, James is correct, however I think low information voters give Trump the benefit of the doubt because the economy was good from 2016-January 2020. They completely ignore him fumbling the economy during COVID and justify it by saying that no matter who was in charge the economy would have tanked.
Farmers had to be bailed out by federal government 12 billion because of Trump tariffs.
James!!!!!
I wish James would run for President!
Tariffs are protective measures, for instance, setting tariffs on Chinese EV's is necessary to mitigate heavy Chinese governmental subsidies (and Chinese tech theft to design EV's). Actually, if the revenue from those tariffs would go to subsidize domestic EV sales, you could say Chinese subsidies lands with the American people. Wouldn't that be funny?
Otherwise tariffs are just taxes and inflation drivers. Talking about setting a 200% tariff on JohnDeere products if they set up manufacturing in Mexico is beyond stupid - a pure tax on American farmers.
The American farmer, who will vote for Trump and then complain about the parts to repair his John Deere equipment, all the while cashing those government subsidized by the American tax payers.
Xi is a strong man and bold man a powerful man. Don't Trump sound like a closeted gay dude?

James, I wish VP Harris would bring you on to her Campaign for the remaining days to help her 👍👍👍
Prof Carville needs to join the Harris election team.
Correct thank you James lorax vs onceler.speak for the trees
James is right. Go after tariffs. But, dump the vague reference to 200, 400 “economists”. Really bad messaging. There’s a really strong anti expert sentiment in the country. But, put a face on it. And, yeah, the problem with tarries is the tit for tat, and last time Trump had to send billions to the farmers he screwed with his tariffs.
Harris needs some short-term policy to show a direct attack on high prices. People are primarily hurting from bills that come in weekly or at most monthly (e.g. groceries, normal shopping, gas, electricity/heating and rent etc). Housing & price gouging & tax cuts are good but more mid to long term.
This could be anything from a straight cash payment per household, or coupons, or anything that directly and immediately impacts some of those costs.
I fear many will not feel their #1 issue is being addressed without this & may not vote for her.
I could be cynical & say she need not carry through on the promise if elected but putting some policy of this sort is possibly the key to gain sufficient votes to win.
Mr.Carvill you being a Democrat can you please relay this Message to the Harris campaign i was thinking the same thing she needs to start saying this in Michigan Pennsylvania and Wisconsin please sir i think it would really help with the voters
So agree. Tariffs are ridiculous and no one is pushing on it. Meanwhile scary Don is still on track to be president.
I agree that elevating tariffs is very important. However I also think that we shouldn’t gloss over Vance’s speech yesterday where he had that wacky idea of putting people with existing health problems into their own insurance pool I doubt there are many voters in this country that don’t have at least a family member that that would negatively impact honestly I think we should be screaming that from the rooftops every day Mr. Carville perhaps you can raise this with the campaign I know today anyway I haven’t seen any coverage about it
This is not new to you, James, but unfortunately, a vast portion of this population will never vote for a woman or a woman of color because they are obsessed with hate in their hearts and Trump represents sadly that very large portion of this country and we’re never gonna get past it and I appreciate your candor and frankness because I am a plain spoken person too!
Kamala has touched on how tariffs will increase grocery prices $4,000 annually - hope she and Tim stay healthy and strong so they can get to the people everywhere everyday!
I hope you have the ear of the Harris people!!
You guys are the best.
Pose a straightforward question to him. Pick a number of items, state their price now and ask what their prices would be with a tariff added. Simple black and white demonstration of tariff's affect on prices in simple terms
The entire argument of tarrifs bringing manufacturing to the US, means "raise the consumer price to a point where it becomes financially advisable to invest in a new manufacturing facility domestically". The entire thing is based on raising consumer price by artificially causing scarcity.
Yet somehow they do not equate that to prices increasing.
Should be another debate and focus on the economy! Chicken trump!
Tariffs are much more popular across the mid-west than you would like to admit, farmers will still 100% vote for Trump.
Some farmers might 100% vote for him; but 100% of all farmers will not.

Check farm foreclosures in the 80s as the corporate farmers and the bankers farmed foreclosured land as the farmers watched. Losing our connection to the land is disaster.
Yeah , i would rather go to Walmart and buy a t - shirts for 75 cents than buy one at a clothing store for 12$ . Man you got to love those Chinese. They make and provide us with goods that are dirt cheap . And they really know how to treat their labor force . They even subsidize their buisnesses to drive prices even lower so we dont need those U. S. textile manufacturing plants . Screw those tariffs . And the American folks that work there . And while qe are at it , mive rhe car manufacturer plantscto Mexico so we make the cars cheaper .
Tariffs should NOT be something that can be unilaterally imposed. The Denocratic party is just as much to blame because they could have worked with Republicans who likely would have supported clarifying the law ro force furure levies and subsequent trade wars to go through Congress. If Trump gets back into the White House there won't be any way to stop this from happening unless they can ram something through before he's sworn in.
I haven’t seen anyone asking who benefits from tariffs. If a widget costs $1000 now but say has a 25% tariff imposed. Who gets the extra cash? Consumers pay but if this widget is made outside the US by a US owned company my guess is the corporation reaps the benefits. Of course foreign owned company executives win as long as the widgets keep selling at the higher price. Is this why corporations and their shareholders aren’t weighing in on this? Just wondering.
I must say that his threat against Deere was interesting. He said he would do it if they moved their production to Mexico. Sorry folks but that's going to be candy to a lot of ears. It's a threat that working people will like to hear and Kamala needs to get some of that mojo. Maybe not threaten tariffs but something to let these corporations know that they can't offshore jobs with no consequences.
The simplest thing you have to understand about tariffs is, that the country or countries that you impose tariffs on, they're just going to turn around and impose tariffs of equal or even greater amounts on YOUR goods that YOUR countries companies and your people export and expect to get sold overseas. So then not only are you hurting the regular consumer because they're going to pay a lot more for products because companies on THIS side will buy at that higher rate because of the tariffs, and then just sell at the higher rate to cover the costs, YOU are also going to have hundreds of companies in THIS country having to cut and lay off people and cut back because their goods are not being sold as much overseas because the other countries ALSO imposed tariffs to counteract what you're doing. It's one big huge scam and it destroys economies and jobs and the cost of goods for General americans.
Every single economics professor I’ve ever had said tariffs are not the answer, every single one of them…
After the disaster of his Trade War I'm shocked Congress didnt act to try and chsnge the law of allowing presidents to unilaterally impose tariffs. If they act quickly it's not too late, otherwise there will be nothing to stop him from destroying the economy if he gets back into power.
Wealth transfer upwards via Tariffs..?
Hey, if the tariffs are so awful, how come Biden never recinded them? And when the tariffs were put on during Trump‘s presidency, we still had very low inflation. I’ve been working in manufacturing most of my life, and I can tell you a lot of these tariffs are not inflationary. The tariffs are also good strategy for a lot of factories have moved over the Vietnam and Thailand.
Dn’t just talk….make a money flow chart of what happens from the overseas supplier to the actual end user. It would show the money collected by the US government from the supplier going to the US treasury and the end user eventually paying more for the additional cost of the tariff. In other words an additional tax on imports.
And we are not just talking about end products but many of the imported parts used on products assembled in the US. This is inflationary. If you shop for a lot of non-grocery items say at Walmart. Beware.
Instead of focusing on America manufacturers becoming more competitive by installing tariffs, why don’t we focus on making American companies more effective in their manufacturing and is distribution processes? Every dollar saved in those areas goes to the bottom line. Adding tariffs allows those same companies to coast along and not be challenged by countries that did find ways to improve their production, quality and delivery metrics. Think Toyota.
Ok, just so I understand let me ask you a question. Are you saying that it is better to allow an adversarial nations government to destroy our nations industries by subsidizing its own industries giving them an unfair competitive advantage rather than asking our citizens to accept a fair price for the purchases they make? From China's point of view we are allowing them to make economic war against the US at a very low cost. American manufacturing industries are a shadow of what they once were because of foolish trade policy that has been in place for decades and has seen one industry after another disappear. I am old enough to remember when American Industrial might was the envy of the world. Now that the economic war is a fait accompli politicians have finally begun to admit how wrong they were.
As a small business owner, I hate tariffs as well. Vote in November.

Look in you cupboard anything that is not 100% US made.
Also make imported items less competitively priced and you remove the incentive for local products to price match as you have reduced competition to keep them honest.
They certainly dont make anything cheaper. So tell me what is his plan to magically make things cheaper. If the government is not raking cash in off the consumer as a result what is the point of a tariff. Manufacturers are not paying the tariff
