    I went and listened to Shops and Circus in Korean, and Mackenzie is meant to come across as a boy. I thought that in "shops" it was intended on the voice actress to sound more masculine. Wasn't certain though until Circus as Korean doesn't use pronouns. In it, when Coco asks Bluey to demand Mackenzie to be her husband, she uses the word nampyeon, which is literally husband, and is used for men. Earlier in the scene she used "yeobo" which is more like honey or darling and is gender neutral.

      I tried to watch Bluey in Korean dub as a half-korean myself, but I couldn't even get halfway through one episode. I don't know what it is, but hearing a native language of mine being dubbed over a show that is naturally spoken in English makes me cringe so hard😂. But seeing Makenzie is voiced by a female doesn't surprise me. A ton of Korean media has women voice male characters. Do you know if the VA for Korea tries to sound masculine for MacKenzie?

    • @laceyjo89
      @laceyjo89 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@matthewchi5292 it's sounded to me like they tried to sound more masculine. there wasn't a huge difference between the voice tones of all the children though. i looked up the korean VA cast, and there's less actors, so there's actors doing a lot more parts (like 8+), so that's why each character didn't sound as distinct as in the original english version. at least to me.

  • @VibinWitch
    @VibinWitch 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +54

    It's pretty normal for girl VAs to voice male children, as they tend to retain that high pitch for longer (especially if the show takes longer to age the characters. You can't very well have a tween boy voicing a 5 year old). I always thought of Makenzie as a boy but I could see him as being either gender easily. The pups play games that are gender neutral most of the time so I can see the confusion

    Mackenzie is a boy here in the US but touching on the Japanese version, when some characters in anime are under the ages of 12 to 17, sometimes 18, Depending on when the voice fully cracks for a young man, it's easier for an adult woman to voice a young boy child. Think of it like the Ash Ketchum effect. Yeah. He's been 10 years old for over 20 years, but has had only two female voice actors in the US in those years. But that came with a change of studios. But in Japan, Ash is voiced by a girl as well. So there is that logic as well for the whole voice acting aspect for one of our other favorite animated border colie.

      Never been surprised by hearing the JP version uses female VA for young boys, it's just so common for them to do so XD. They even have VAs like Romi Park and Megumi Ogata who are well known to take VA roles of young boys. Extreme example is Megumi Ogata takes the role of Yuta Okkotsu in Jujutsu Kaisen, a 17 years old young man.

    I thought Mackenzie was male the first time around... namely just from context clues.
    In cartoon dubs its actually very common for kids, even male characters, to be voiced by women. It avoids some of the difficulty of working with children, you're more likely to find an experienced voice actor and avoids a common problem of having a young boy voicing a character in a long-running show... if the show lasts for a long time that voice actor is going to age and his voice will change drastically. You can hear it in shows like for instance Steven Universe where they basically just have the character age with the VA so its less of an issue.
    You see it in anime too. In fact most popular shonen anime characters like Naruto, Edward Elric and Monkey D Luffy are voiced by women.

    As a Finnish person, I was very confused when I saw Mackenzie's name being Mäkelä in the dub :D (because its a family name)
    But I understand the decision because Mackenzie as a name don't fit for Finnish language kinda at all.
    Also he isn't the only one whose name is different, for example Bandit's name is Rontti in the dub
    Edit: I forgot to correct that Mäkelä as a name doesn't have any gender, its a surname. The name itself doesn't have anything which could show it being female.
    I understand if the ä-ending might get the vibe because it looks like a, but its a different sound and also in Finnish language the a-ending of a name doesn't make it female like it does in many other languages. if voiced by an adult female, they still might be going for male. A lot of adolescents male cartoon characters are voiced by adult Females. (written before it came up in the video.) so cartoons do use children voice actors and sometimes when they grow up the males voices tend to crack... depending on age of the viewers and type of cartoon they would change out voice actors... I think the studios doing the dubbing are granted some freedom regarding the side characters. Because most of the time it doesn't really matter. So they choose whatever they think works best. Be it for reasons within the show, or them not having another voice actor, or whatever else they might come up with.
    Like I remember a show "Alfred J. Kwak" (totally worth a watch by the way) where in the original Dutch version a Magpie side character is male and in the German dub they are female, without it making any difference, because they are a side character and only appear occasionally anyway. Perhaps a similar deal with Mackenzie, especially in season 1, where he only has small appearances and only later gets more into the spotlight. like getting basically an entire episode for himself. Perhaps also coming with more fleshed out plans what would happen with him in the future (like him becoming Bluey's husband and them having a child, or something). So the higher ups stepped in, so that would get remedied. Leading to Mackenzie changing to a boy in some dubs from season 2 forward. Like if memory serves me right, his gender only somewhat would matter in "Mums and Dads" in Season 1, so it would make a little more sense for Indie to ask him to play the dad (though to my understanding that doesn't necessarily matter all that much to kids anyway), but as he has no real interest in that either way, and doesn't actually play the part, it's of little to no consequence.

If his name was supposed to be "Mikayla", it would be written as "Mikaela" in Finnish (which is pronounced way differently than Mäkelä). Mäkelä is indeed a common lastname in Finland and I think that might be the point here. Instead of it being meant as his first name, they probably meant to have it as his last name and everyone just calls him by his last name. That is fairly common in Finland to call your friends by their last name (often in a joking manner, but especially in situations where friendgroup has multiple people with same first name), using it in a same way as you would a nickname. It might be just also them giving him a random name to keep it more genderneutral, after all Bluey does have some other characters who don't have actual human names (like Muffin and Socks as a good example) so it would make sense. Othen than the name and the voice actor being a girl, its really hard to tell when someone is supposed to be a girl or a boy in Finnish because we only have genderneutral pronouns, but I had to go and check and it does seem that he has more masculine voice in the second season compared to the first season in the Finnish dub too. In conclusion: I'm fairly sure Mackenzie is supposed to be a boy in the Finnish dub too.

    This actually happens in tv shows a lot more than you think. Especially with characters with more gender neutral names, take Thomas and friends for example where Duck is definitely a guy but in the greek dub for series 2-5 he was a girl and Rusty depending on dub and series has been male, female and gender neutral.
    I do believe most finnish dubs give their characters traditional names, i think this is both for grammar and culture reasons.

    If makenzie is a boy or girl, I think makenzie is a boy for these reasons:
    Makenzie was with jack and rusty- both boys.
    Makenzie and Bluey were shipped in the episode Barry boats. winton would not ship those because they seem less competent than that (I guess) Makenzie and Coco were husband and wife in circus.
    Makenzie is voiced by a male voice actor
    Makenzie used/s male pronouns
    I think Makenzie is non-binary or both because:
    Makenzie fits in with the boys and the girls
    Makenzie's pronouns are varied
    They seem to feel comfortable with both
    Makenzie's voice actors vary
    I doubt that if Makenzie is nonbinary/both it will be shown much in the show due to controversy

    I'm woman and I have lower voice (probably alt). When I was at maby secend class of primary school (probably 8 years old) we went on school trip. At the bus two older boys started talk about me "do you see, that girl? She have voice like boy" (which I've heard) and then they started trying to get my attencion. With iritated I responded "what?" which unexpectedly sounded much lower than normal and one of boys said to his friend "wow, you were right, she does sound like a boy". I was too shy to tell them that accually they sounded like girls because they were before voice mutation ;-;
    In most animations young boys are play by female actreses and thats normal (but sometimes its turns funny like in original Dragon Ball, where main caracter grows up and no one wanted to change his voice actress).

    Greetings from Russia! In the original dubbing of the first season, Mackenzie himself and the characters used feminine pronouns and verbs in relation to him. That's why I thought Mackenzie was a girl. Then the translators and actors corrected it. But still, I realized it was better to watch the original dubbing with subtitles, I'm in love with voices and their accents.

    I guess whether or not you pick up on the children's genders has a lot to do with your own upbringing. I will admit I'm a bit more in that traditional boat where I expect boys and girls to have different mannerisms. Bluey has a ton of female mannerisms as does Honey, who is also often misgendered. McKenzie always came across to me as a boy. But also when I see Winton saying that "Bluey is going to marry McKenzie", I follow the cues of the show and err towards the show not attempting to put an LGBT+ reference in there. But many people are either happy to see characters they find gender neutral, or are pre-emptively upset that there is an agenda. That comes down to upbringing. A child can be taught to look for things that might not be there, or to be open minded just enough to second guess their initial thought. But mistaking the genders of children is really not the issue. The issue is with those who harbour hate in their hearts and use this show as evidence of an agenda. In the end, while it is fun to dissect all the things the creators put into this show, this show is still for kids and it's going to reflect typical childhood experiences.

    I got into Bluey from TH-cam videos (specifically yours and Pugly's!) and when I heard there was a kid named Mackenzie I was excited because that's my name! Because of that, I assumed they were a girl but then I heard them talk and realized they were a boy. I knew Mackenzie was a Scottish name originally and that it typically was used for boys (and as a last name) and the fact that Mackenzie is a Border Collie, which is traditionally seen as a Scottish breed, it made more sense that they were a boy.
    I think the same issue occurs with Bluey herself. Initially, hearing the name Bluey you would typically expect that to be a boy's name, but both Bluey and Bingo are girls! I think it's really neat that more and more people are realizing that the connotations to a name do not mean they are correct. Names are just the things that we call people, it doesn't dictate what gender they are.

There’s a difference between actually watching and just overhearing it while your kid is watching and you’re doing something else. There are questions asked so often in the group I’m not sure how they still get approved. It’s not hard to figure out simple things like the sex of a damn character.

    Hello a finnish person here!
    I was just watching some Bluey episodes in Finnish where Mackenzie is featured and yes they do call him Mäkelä which is a surname
    It's most likely do to Mackenzie sounding kind of similar to the surname but it made me think this time when I was younger and for some reason every kid in school was refferd by their surname as a nickname (Once this one boy in my class was often called by a very typical femine name since it was part of his surname, and he liked that name so much he used it himself as well xD) so I like to think they do the same for the Finnish Mackenzie
    Other thing that is a bit hard to point out id his gender since Finnish doesn't have a gendered pronouns when reffering to others, but in circus however Coco calls him her husband which would mean he would be a boy (or that he just isn't comftroble being called a husband)
    Also Winton still teases Bluey and Mackenzie in Barky Boats and says they'll get married
    Which ever still works I like Mackenzie no matter what gender crises they'd have xD

      @lucianochaisson9224 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I feel it's unpopular because of the high care requirements.
      It's not an easy lazy family pet, like a shih tzu. It's active and intelligent and WILL make up things to do (no matter how destructive) if not kept busy, so that probably deters a good number of folks. Also, long fur means lots of brushing and maintenance to avoid painful matting. (Not that shih tzus don't have high requirements for their fur.)
      A lot of people just don't have the time or energy for such a hyper & clever pup. (Though there are absolutely the outliers, as I've heard of some lazy collies before. It all depends on the dog's personality.)

    Okay actually I can confirm in Finland the voice actor is trying to sound like young boy cause we have lot of women voice actor doing boy voice to just like you said some do it deeper but I can understand why it would be hard to know if the character is boy or girl and in Finland it doesn’t help than she and he are same for example hän(she) and hän(he) so that makes it confusing to some who uses pronouns cause our pronouns don’t have different for female or male so in Finnish languages you have to say like him as boy or her as girl in Finland if some one want to be Pacific what gender we are talking about off course my example could be wrong I’m bad at explaining thing but hopefully this helps for the Finnish side of bluey fans

    When I started watching Bluey with my kids, I spent a couple of episodes thinking *Bluey* was a boy... but it was always obvious that MacKenzie was a boy. I understand that non-English countries could have had a different experience based on voice actors, but if they didn't change the script, the show goes a very long way to both set up MacKenzie as a boy and constantly hint at a "Bluey + MacKenzie" relationship in the future.

    Hello! I’m an Indonesian watcher who is a member of the LGBTQ+ community (to clarify: I identify as a biromantic, demisexual demigirl, but to make things easier, you can think of me as a bisexual woman instead - also I’m technically closeted but a lot of my close friends already know, I think the only people who don’t are my parents and extended family) who understands Japanese and wants to clear up some of the stuff regarding both:
    In Japan, there are no kid voice actors. As far as I’m aware, they have adults voice everyone - so for children, who need to sound more childlike, they hire female voice actors. For example, lots of the younger Links in The Legend of Zelda series are voiced by women and I think Ash from Pokémon is voiced by a female voice actor as well. Like mentioned, since Mackenzie uses “僕” (boku), he’s a boy.
    I’m not as familiar with Indonesian voice acting practices since I (and many other Indonesians) prefer to watch the original version of the media with subtitles since Indonesian dubbing is usually… bad. We were basically trained since childhood to read subtitles and lots of other kids shows were shown in their original language + subtitles. This is standard practice in the cinemas too, even for family friendly and kid movies. I can’t comment on the quality for Bluey’s dub though, since I watch it in English. Indonesia also doesn’t have gendered pronouns (everyone is “dia” here, with plural being “mereka”) which keeps a lot of things gender neutral. So, for this case, I think most kids watching Bluey in Indonesia, subbed or dubbed, know that he’s a boy, especially if the voice clips have him act/sound more masculine. Still would be interesting to know what happens in the later timeskip episodes though.
    With regard to Indonesia’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws… yeah that sucks. There’s a lot of really bigoted people and most of the hate comes from those who are either uneducated/unaware about why people are LGBTQ+ (like my parents) or those who are really religious (side note: I don’t think all religious people hate the LGBTQ+ community, but it is unfortunately the norm in Indonesia). There’s a ton of LGBTQ+ people in Indonesia as well (lots of recorded trans people but I’m sure there’s plenty of us hiding around there). I’m also pretty sure the law only applies to:
    1) Extremely religious provinces (I noticed Aceh was used in the photos and that is a very notorious Muslim province. Technically it’s an autonomous region in Indonesia that has its own laws outside of our secular government. I think alcohol is outlawed there as well).
    2) Indonesian citizens (if you’re a foreigner, you’re safe). Still sucks, but please don’t let the law discourage you from visiting us - we are a beautiful and diverse country full of amazing scenery (not just Bali). Just please be respectful of our historic and natural sites.
    Law enforcement here is also trash so I doubt they’ll care for something minor as someone being LGBTQ+ (not to mention the law is super vague as well) when we have… so many more issues. I say this because a lot of movies still keep some LGBTQ+ scenes in it without raising the age rating (unlike in Russia). Many Indonesians also hate this law - we really value freedom of speech and any restrictive law, even those that don’t affect them - is disliked by a vast (silent) majority of us. We have a lot of recorded trans people here after all. Indonesians have a trend of hating any restrictive law - there were riots on the streets for days over censorship in media I think at one point.
    Thanks for getting to the bottom of my essay! I made a few more edits for clarity and formatting for easier reading.

    Most male children voices are done by women so that's another thing that makes it hard to distinguish whether or not mackenzie's a boy or girl. But since these are all child actors there's no way that would happen. But there is a thing I noticed that might make it optional to be that McKenzie is transgender or is a boy or girl by the coloration of his legs. That they are opposite of each other so he could be a yin and yang thing going on. Or they don't know yet kind of a thing going on with the coloring.
    Also yes when I hear Mackenzie I was like a boy's name really? I know of a girl in my class named was Mackenzie.

    I'm not sure why there was such confusion in season 1. In the episode "Mums and Dads", Indy was told to go play with Mackenzie, so she told him to be the Dad. She didn't pick any of the girls to play with afterwards - Snickers, the Terrier, and Winton - because she was looking for a dad specifically because the dad stays home and she had to work. So it makes sense that Mackenzie would follow that trend.
    Also, if we have to be super stereotyped, his room was very boyish in "Fruit Bat". I never once had a doubt Mackenzie was a boy, so all of this confusion is just baffling to me. Same thing with Bluey, she just always seemed to be a girl to me.
    Maybe it's because I worked with kids and I can hear the difference in the voices. I don't know.

    There are a lot of shows that have female voice actors for young male characters, especially if the characters are going to stay young or development of the show would take a while. If a child actor went through puberty and their voice changed during recording/the shows development before the character was due to grow up it would be difficult for them to continue working and the actor may need to be replaced. In this case if Noone called out that Mackensie as he until season 2 its possible that it was overlooked during localisation in the areas where Mackensie does use female leaning language so the localisation team adapted and continued to use it?

    Here in Portugal in the first season of Bluey they used femenin pronouns for mackenzie on some episodes and also for Socks! They used male pronouns for socks on one episode but in the previous one Muffin called her sister not brother. And in season 2 and 3 they were normal again.

    In my country Makenzie is a boy and I have decided since I've seen two versions of the spelling of the name Makenzie is Makenzie without a C and then Mackenzie with a C.
    So in my opinion the one without a C Makenzie is the masculine version and the one with a C Mackenzie is the feminine version.
    But that's just my opinion I don't know if that's like officially what the human race thinks that's just what I think lol.

    Being and Indonesian living in Australia I always thought Mackenzie was a boy. Even though the Indonesian dub is a female actress for Mackenzie, the dubbing and character lean more to masculinity. However I'm not sure on this whole situation regarding Mackenzie's gender in the Indonesian dub as i stick to the Aussie version when at home in Australia.
