  • In 2004, I flew to Kokoda and walked The Track with three grandsons of men who fought with the Australian 2/14th Battalion and 2/16th Battalion in World War II. My Dad, brother, and several good friends were also in the group. I took a camera and tripod with me to film the emotional trip.
At the time, I was working as a news reporter for Channel Ten in Melbourne. My news director encouraged me to write a documentary. This video is the first draft of our edit; the doco never went to air because I departed Channel Ten for the ABC.
With hindsight I can see the mistakes I made in the storytelling. I would love to have another go at the edit. But I was young and inexperienced. Overall, I'm really proud of the entire experience. I'm posting it here for my family and friends 20 years after we finished out walk.
The interview with the great Stan Bisset was shot in his Noosa home. He died six years later.
I went back to Kokoda in 2005 with my good friend and star lensman Anthony Fitzpatrick. We walked from Kokoda Village to Isurava to shoot the first ANZAC Day service on the The Track. Allan Border and Mal Meninga were there as part of a trek. Fitzy and I got a helicopter ride out of the mountains and fed the story back to Sydney from Port Morseby for the midday news.
