As a heterosexual woman this can be empowering to be open about sexual preferences in a metaphor and lyrical way...So wouldn't expect these two to understand it or clearly for it to be "their thing." A heterosexual Male would also be more appreciative of the lyrics. I would say however, the younger one seemed more appreciative or open (which is more common for younger people).
