It's quite disturbing to realise that there is an whole industry out there, who's business appears to be, slowly churning through the historical stock of gold coins and defacing them all.
Thank you so much for the video and providing such vital information. I'm learning so much from you so please keep posting! You're also quite humorous at times too which keeps things very conversational and engaging 😂

The coins were all genuine. We did not have enough time to take and process DSLR photos of a selection of them, but will add them when we publish the complementary blog for this video.
This is because when you buy it the shop/dealer "sells it to you as a coin" - but when you sell it back to the shop/dealer they consider it scrap metal, just weight & carat. It's the only business I know of that can get away with it. Not to mention the VAT & CGT . . .
What I do not understand about H&T is why they can not have a Sigma Precious Metal Verifier in each store thus no need to damage the coins. They can be had for about £1000 each so about £280k in total. The Shops made just under £10m Pre-tax Profit in the 1st half of 2024. They other way around is to have better training of their Staff especially the Manager in each store
@ Thanks for that I did look at the prices and it must be out of range for every amateur but possibly in the future with mass sales the price could be affordable. There must be a huge demand not just for coins but testing peoples metal content. This kind of analysis to me reminds me of the progress over the past seventy years when this would take a weeks work and need a whole coin to sacrifice.
If you think gold is a problem even 1 pound coins are counterfeited one in sixteen a lot of forgers out there. The Chinese and Indians are very dodgy so when you buy gold and if it's too cheap it's Tungsten wrapped around in gold .
What’s the point of the new Hatton Garden branch, no website and not available to the general public, with Sharps Pixley you can just turn up and buy with cash or card. ??
@@Jimmyredcab It does not need its own website, and it's only a representative office, not intended to replicate our Blackpool head office. I bought 5/6 sovereigns from H+T about 4years ago. They all seem to have a different finish than usual sovereigns. I would describe the finish on these coins as gloss rather than matt. They are all the older variety, not the rose gold type. I checked their weights and did a “ping” test and all seemed ok. I came to the conclusion that they had been gold plated. However, ‘I could be wrong’. Very interesting video cheers.
@@tattoedmatthanks for your reply. No, definitely not proof coins….unfortunately! If they were I would be a very rich man. The coins I am describing have all the usual marks and scratches too. Something not right about them though. Cheers
They are likely to have been ex jewellery sovereigns that at one point have been mounted in a pendant, thus they will have a polished look to the surface.
@leo-v8yex jewellery sovereigns are usually polished in the centre and matt around the perimeter accompanied with minor damage to the edges. Whilst I understand your theory, this does not describe the coins I am talking about. Cheers
Ive had some good bargains from H&T , but same i asked the other day what they buy sovs for and it was £30pg £240 😮 made them double check that wasn't for a half.
I’ve been buying from chards and atkinsons bullion since I started my journey, it’s pleasing to know you are trustworthy in what you do which is why I will always come back to you for business, thanks
Yes, we fully understand that, and would prefer to shoot in a different room. Perhaps it's time we got a third Niton XRF machine, because this one is needed frequently, and we hook up a notebook PC to show the readings.
But it sounds like your staff are either clumsily dropping heavy objects or working a forge ! If you pay their wages, just tell them to be quiet , for heaven's sake.
This is silly. Pawnbrokers offer a credit service. They obviously require collateral and must surely protect their business by validating the collateral. This could have been done many years ago. When were those expensive machines even available commercially ? A long time ago, my father pawned jewellery without my mums permission when he needed instant cash. He redeemed it within time and paid the pawnbroker's charges at the agreed price. That was a legal transaction entered into by one party- to keep away the bailiffs, and by the other party to make a profit. I have no love of pawnbrokers but I am suprised you are misrepresenting the facts. You are much older than me and I cannot believe you don't understand why people use the very ancient trade of pawnbroking . Please just wear a smart shirt in future, your attire makes you look like the caretaker. I admire your knowledge, please dress with dignity. From Yorkshire, you're favourite county . Best wishes for new year.
I am not misrepresenting the facts. Apart from making loans at high interest rates, most pawnbrokers also buy and sell as in this example. I feel I have earned the luxury of wearing what I choose to wear, and the tee-shirts and sweatshirts I wear in TH-cam videos are custom designed with some of my mantras. The next will be a photo of our unique 2023 brockage gold sovereign, once I have chosen the colourways. 😎
A polo shirt perhaps? Anything with a collar will do. Yes, indeed , you are right, and I have never stepped foot in a pawnbroker's shop and hope I never will. Keep up your good work and maybe if your videos were too polished, it would be like watching the BBC, heaven forbid. Keep well , stay free
Just another reason i stick to pure 9.999 gold... I love British sovereign coins, and history behind them, and monarch history, but pure gold is as good - as it gets in purest form! 🪙
All pawnbrokers in the UK offer awful prices for gold, and sell poor quality coins with a huge mark up. Complete rip off merchants!

Sigma testers are useful and quick, but not infallible. I guess they are too tight to buy them. 😎
What was the machine you used?
Its a Niton XRF Machine. Let us know if there is anything else you want to see tested in a video!

what do you do with the scratched and acid test ones then?
I think I said in the video that we would designate then as "Grade C". 😎

what percentage of sovereign coins that you get are fakes? is it very common to get one?
We have never tried to log the percentages, but overall it is probably around 1%.

@lawrencechard5914 scandalous 🤬
First time veiwer here and great little video. What is the name of that instrument that you're using to do a metal analysis?
It is a Niton XRF Machine.
@lawrencechard5914 thank you! Ah wow that you have XRF. I am a chemist so I was wondering what kind of instrument it was. Thanks again.
It is a sigma tester

Damm 55% of the value for a full sovereign so if you go sell a half sovereign how much the going to 30%??? What scammers I'm getting angry now!!!
Apparently, they also pay 55% of intrinsic, so pro rata with the sovereigns.
👍🏴
