Today I'm sharing some items that I've decluttered from my closet lately. I still have about 100 items of clothing, and there's a lot of things that I am just not using or wearing. I'm a huge fan of decluttering on a regular basis, and doing these closet audits helps me make sure I'm getting the most use and value out of my clothes. I'm no longer decluttering with a certain number of items in mind, but I am decluttering with the aim to be honest with myself about what I actually use vs. what I find I'm holding onto and why.
What have you decluttered lately? Let me know!

The Alexander Wang boots are a perfect example of how some items can totally fit and vibe with your style on paper but in execution they just don’t work for one reason or another. I have a number of those types of items and this just encouraged me to finally let go of them.

I was a fast fashion crazy person for about 3 years being plus size sometimes it was the only option to have anything updated in my wardrobe. At 62 I’m near retirement and working pastime so a smaller income now (a lot less money) Then I got a conscience and decided to stop buying all fast fashion. My second step was to start purchasing better quality items that I would keep forever and I had a huge yard sale to get rid of the fast fashion “crappy fabric” items I had and have money to purchase my fully thrifted quality items. This purchasing journey has been going on for over a year and declutter from my wardrobe on a weekly basis (if there are any) the items go into a garbage bag and after my roommate goes through it I will donate it after a month or 2 depending on how full it gets. I’ve pulled items out to use for upcycling on occasion and I’ve taken the bag for work friends to go through as well

I related to this video so much! Your mindset with your decluttering journey reminds me so much of mine. I used to buy so many beautiful clothes, shoes, and bags, and most of them just sat there unused. I admired them, certainly, and was proud to own them, but when it came to actually wearing them, I always had something else I preferred, some other top or dress or pair of boots I wore over and over. It took me a while to have that epiphany that I should just keep the stuff I wore over and over and looked forward to wearing and using, and let go of the “beautiful but not working for me” stuff.

Thank you so much for making videos about your journey out of debt and intentional spending. I turned to TH-cam on a whim 5 years ago when I started my self improvement journey and the first video I ever watched of yours immediately resonated so clearly with my own situation and struggles when it comes to spending on clothing as well as clothing being the main reason for being in debt. I think it was fate I found your channel and seeing someone else successfully tackle the same issues I’m currently battling has given me the strength and validation I was desperately looking for and needed. Thank you so very much, your wisdom is a blessing!

    • @lindsaysmith8522

I should say with clothing being one of the main reasons of staying in debt. Student loans would make up a significant portion of the amount owed but there is just something about clothing I have a hard time with not spending money on. I find it so thrilling and satisfying to look for vintage/used/new clothing, it’s like treasure hunting a bit.. but your channel has helped open my eyes to the emotions I’m feeling behind the over spending and what I’m avoiding addressing internally each time I feel the urge to make an impulsive purchase

Prayers for Ukraine it has to be hard trying to balance that hurt with your work on TH-cam like today that we all needed. Thank you for this video it really resonated when you talked about afraid to let go bc urge to replace will hit even though you don’t wear it. I packed away spring summer to enjoy pared down winter closet and….the volume of what I know I’ve decluttered and rebought late last fall in a low buy slipup….😳.

Christina! I absolutely LOVE your channel, especially your decluttering & low buy videos. I relate to your love of denim so much - I’m a bit of a collector of denim myself. Could you do a video where you try on and style/show off every pair of denim you’ve decided to keep? I would love to see what’s made it through all of these decluttering videos 💙

I decluttered my closet yesterday, got rid of a lot of things, but it hasn’t been as easy for me to sell them, even though they are cool, from good brands and have been hardly worn :( I guess that’s a lesson as well, that responsibly decluttering is hard and I shouldn’t take lightly buying new things in the future

    • @EmilyDickmesome
      @EmilyDickmesome 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

When I can't sell something then I gift them to my coworkers, extended family, friends etc. who are my size and like my style. I ask them first if they'd be interested ofc. I don't get any of my money back but at least I know they will be used by others anyways. Gifted one of my sundresses that I had only worn once to my younger cousin and she was over the moon. Made me happy too.🙂

I agree with the planned purchase and still for the fantasy self. I've intentionally saved and bought high quality items, but then never used/wore them because they were too nice and didn't want to get them dirty...but really they weren't authenticly "me".

  • @lizziebkennedy7505
    @lizziebkennedy7505 2 ปีที่แล้ว

So much meta insight here. I’ve got things that I did all the smart rules on - I fit it in with the rest of my robe, I waited - three weeks! I budgeted, I offset, I found it preloved. And it is a beautiful item (a Madewell tan leather tote with cross body strap). But there’s no zing. No joy sparked, it’s more logic: right colour, quality, beautifully made, thrifty, goes with everything, but that’s not the whole story). Your leadership, Christina, has provided pathways to really tune in on our sweet spots and maybe avoid some of these pitfalls in the future. In my experience, sparking joy makes for a very curated life and I love it! And you 💚

Great video. I've got some free time the next few days so I think another closet declutter is in my future. The main things I will be decluttering are clothes I bought for my "fantasy self". These are such as waste. I'm so glad I no longer shop for entertainment and out of boredom. The world has enough waste in it without me being an over consumer. I now love thrifting but only buy something if it is a WOW and I know I will use it.

So sorry about your jean debacle. I've had this happen before with a pricey pair of jeans and I was so very disappointed. Now, I take my items to Nordstrom for tailoring. The tailor I work with started adding these little darts to the back of my jeans that avoid making the pockets look too close or creating a weird angle. It's time for me to do my pre-spring declutter. Thanks for the inspiration to move forward!

I appreciate these videos so much. I long for effortless style and was thinking about why I rarely feel effortless. When you said the word "aware" it really made sense. I feel the most effortless when I am not aware and focusing on what I am wearing. When I can go out and not have what I am wearing in my headspace.. this is effortless to me. The declutter I will work on soon will include the question.. Do I feel aware when I have this item on? I am very introverted so I am easily aware of most things I wear so hopefully I won't declutter too many things.

Tailoring: next time don’t take it in as much. When it’s pinned, make sure you like where the pockets are and if you don’t, take it up less. They will still fit “better” if not “perfect”

When i have things that fit nice and feel nice but i dont use them at the moment i will store them. Items that dont really fit or with itchy material can go, i will not miss those.

👋 Hello Christina 👋 YES YOU CAN
    RECYCLE YOUR DENIM
I just looked up how to recycle denim again there is a place called blue jean go green if you don't have a location drop off center near you you can mail it to them free shipping and they will recycle it for you. I also googled locations near me to recycle textile clothing and I have a couple locations near me .I have a big black trash bag full of clothes that are really worn out or have holes in them etc that I will be dropping off soon for it to be recycled. I don't know everything that it may get recycled into I just read some if not all gets recycled in to insulation. Also some stores like h&m u can bring clothes to stores for them to recycle .
Also I have watched a few TH-cam videos on fun creative ways to recycle denim. I took some of my denim that was too long and made some in to capri and some in to shorts. Also I don't sew even though i would like to try to learn some basic sewing skills. Making them in to shorts or capris is very easy no sewing needed just scissors that are good cutting through cloth.
So just some ideas for you or anyone reading if you decide to not sell them. ❤️ hope this helps. If you do repurpose them in to something else would love to hear an update on which way your creative mind chooses to repurpose them into.

I'm not one to make maybe piles whenever I'm decluttering, but on the rare occasion when that does happen, I realize that more often than not, the real answer is just no. It could be because the item doesn't feel like me, or it's just not comfortable or flattering in some way. I remember buying a few t-shirts through ThredUP a while back because my mood then was "I just want to be casual", but for me in reality, I honestly don't mind dressing down colorful blouse or actually wearing my jeans on a day off.

A company called For Days recycles fabric and they’re closed loop! You could send in your jeans and other old clothes that are not appropriate to donate including socks! And I don’t know if you have Madewell in Canada, but they give you store credit if you bring your old jeans to them.

I love decluttering but I think I have a totally new approach. I have some stuff that I could get rid of because I'm not wearing it (some occasional dresses, some pants that I don't like anymore, some sweatpants that I think are not cute, and so on) but I didn't get rid of them. They are nicely packed and actually from time to time (like once per year) I dig into this pile because it occurs that I have an unplanned party with a particular dress code or I'm going to help with some house painting at my friend's place - from time to time that old stuff I haven't used for a half of a year become handy.
In my life, it's probably not possible to have only perfect capsule wardrobe stuff in colors I prefer (light ones) because in some activities I would totally ruin some of the pieces. Stained white tshirt with those not that cute sweatpants occurred to be cool panting and eat pizza outfit 😀

Great declutter, very mindful und thought out :)
I have been decluttering my closet and I am making good progess. However, my mum's closet is a really tough one to declutter. My mum passed away 1,5 years ago and she loved shopping. Meaning she had tons of clothes, some even unworn. I've been trying to declutter her closet in a mindful way because the amount of stuff is a burden for my dad who has to look at his passed wife's wardrobe every single day. But due to the amount of clothes my mum had, a slow declutter where I sell or donate the clothes is taking up so much time and energy.... I don't just want to give a huge amount of clothes to a charity shop because as we know, a lot of donations end up in landfills and that is not what i'm trying to do.
Any tipps on how to handle this situation would be appreciated :)

So now everytime I see a yt video regarding clothes I wonder what kind of coloring would suit that person :) I am no expert and I know that videos on the internet and seeing a person irl is def not the same. But still I wonder - have you ever done a coloranalysis? And could it be that your best colors close to your skin and hair would be cool and clear? In the "winter" season category. Like black, true white, dark cool green, navy, pink etc. To me, and maybe its just me(?), the brown colors seem to wash you out a bit? Maybe its the whole video/screen thing making it a bit distorted?

Oh totally feel you in the “wonderful” world of tailoring 🤦‍♀️ took 3 pairs of 501s to be tailored and came home with -3 pairs of jeans due to the similar looking outcome …. Never again

I'm actually looking for those Uncle Bloomers myself! Will you be selling them?

They’re unfortunately sold already - I’m so sorry! 😭 if I ever declutter my black ones I’ll find you!

Maybe those brownish red pants would look nicer turned into shorts or fouled up the bottom. I had some pants similar in look and fit and folding the bottom to a little above ankle looked way better. Or turn into high waist longer shorts

Oh I see you did try folding

Did you go to a proper tailor with experience in denim or just to the dry cleaners? their experience and expertise can vary a great deal. also, I would only trust alterations that are more than just a hem with a tailor that I have lots of experience with.

It was a long story! I went to the best rated tailor/dry cleaner in my area and she outsources her tailoring. Apparently the jeans never got sent, so when I went to pick them up and they weren’t ready, she insisted on rushing and finished the jeans herself. I wish I just asked her to wait! 😭

Girl! Your tailor did you DIRTY! I think this can still be fixed by someone who is really good with denim - I wish you
were in Vancouver, I have the perfect person for you.

I have this weird thing where i get super stressed when I have too many things of anything. Which honestly has been great in developing stress and dislike towards shopping… The problem I have noticed is that when it is time for me to get rid of certain items because I simply don’t wear them I start thinking about how no one will ever buy the items and it will just end up in the landfill so I always just end up keeping it 🥲
Btw does anyone know her Poshmark I can’t find it and I don’t see it in the description box 😭

I 😍 your Ukrainian 🌻 🇺🇦 name Stinka! 2 year pandemic declutter of beautiful, great condition clothes, some new and never worn!! All donated to Oasis clothing boxes. Initially during the pandemic these boxes were taped up. I held onto everything !! until they were reopened. I still declutter but it's hard to let go of what I love but have not worn in the past 2 years 🤨 Things I do declutter from now on I will take to Chrysta Freeland's office on Bloor W. as soon as donations reopen there as they are currently assessing needs. I don't want to sound mean because that is not my intention but the pants you decluttered and some denim don't do you justice because there seems to be too much material and they are not flattering. I am a denim pant lover too and mostly bought skinny style because I'm 5'2".

Sorry cont'd from above... and petite. But after I decluttered several pairs it was suggested by edgy TH-camr Emily Wheatly that I experiment with trying on different cuts to give me a variety of silhouettes and so far have bought a pair of NYDJ straight leg and Buffalo crop kick flare. I am a walker and so when our weather is drier I will wear them and see how I like the different looks! 🙏💙💛 Rosie 👩‍🦳 🇨🇦

And: i love pointy shoes on other people on photos. But in real life they look ridiculously long on feet and they are just HURTING because the toes get squished... Does anyone love wearing pointy shoes and is really WALKING in them, like some hours a day just for regular... Living 😁🤔 ?!?!?

Question? Why are you dressing differently for online and such? Just be yourself.

I am myself. I just play with outfits for content & playing dress up - but I don’t actually go anywhere besides work so don’t often make the chance to wear those outfits somewhere other than home - I don’t need heels for home! Lol

you can use this app or FB group called “bunz” to trade for your jeans! they have an awesome community for decluttering, building a community and being more sustainable. so it’s really awesome to let go of things and trade for something you may need :)
