Just got my r 12 and did the update. Thanks for the easy to follow guide. Very interested in any f/u videos on the update , particularly using an ipad as the touch screen. Love your demos and channel.
Thanks for the kind words! And yes, I definitely have more R12 & R20 videos planned. I've just been a little slow posting content this year due to all kind of stuff. But looking to get a R12 video up within the next week if I can.
Which makes me wonder why they spent all that development effort and then implement remote control on the iPad. It somewhat undermines the entire concept of a standalone multitrack recorder, when you are back at a tethered DAW.
Hi, Gaz...question for you. I have the R20 and was wondering if I could switch the same SD card between my R20 and an R12? My plan is: I could record drums on the 20 and then record guitars, in another room, with the 12. Assuming the 20 to 12 setup would work, but would require some file moving etc....would a 20 to 20 setup be seamless? As in, the second R20 would automatically read the info, no tweaking of files etc? I hope that made sense. Thanks. BTW, the freezing up of these units is a pain when recording over the same area repeatedly. It can be avoided, even lessened, but it's still a pain for my personal process.
You can move your recorded files back and forth between the R20 and the R12, but it isn't going to be as simple as you want it to be. For starters, the R12 uses a micro SD card and the R20 uses an SD card. That can be remedied by sticking with a microSD card and using an adapter sleeve to turn it into a full sized SD card. But that's hardly the problem. The problem is that the R12 and R20 have their own project naming conventions. The R20 records files into R20 named folders and has .prjz meta data that is different than the R12's named folders and meta data. They have to specific for the specific devices because if you recorded something onto Track 14 of the R20, the R12 wouldn't know how to read that since the R12 only has eight tracks. So you could use the microSD card and adapter sleeve. Record drums on the R20. You'd then have to goto a computer and move those .WAV files into an AUDIO folder that is part of the R12's folder tree. Then create a new project in the R12 and manually import those files into the new R12 project. Record your guitars. Then go back to the computer and move those .WAV files into the AUDIO folder of the R20 folder tree. Pop the SD card into the R20 and open your original project there, then manually import the guitar tracks. Now you could record bass and vocals or something. So yes, it is possible, but it's a bit of a hassle. If you already have the R20, you don't really need the R12. I bought the R20 when it came out because I needed an upgrade from my old R8. I bought the R12 mostly because my TH-cam channel was on the verge of hitting 1,000 subs and I could monetize the channel. I still haven't paid off the R12 or the Canon camera I bought for the channel, but I'm slowly getting there. But if you have the R20 already and you're looking for a second recorder, I would suggest something even more portable has different functionality, like the H4n, H5, or H6 instead. You can record those in 24-bit / 44.1kHz and then import those files into your R20 for bigger projects. But because of the meta data and folder tree names, you won't be able to use a single SD card for all of those devices without first going to a computer to move files around.
I'm not entirely sure without seeing the tracks, but I'm guessing the most likely explanation is that you accidentally muted some tracks or put a track on solo. While in Track View, swipe from the left side of the screen to the middle of the screen to open the track controls (kinda like how you would swipe top-down on your phone to open notifications...just in this case swiping inward from the track numbers on the left side). There you can choose to mute tracks, which will gray them out, or you can solo a track, which will gray out all the other tracks. See if that's the cause. If not lemme know and I'll try to help.
Not a dumb question at all, but you have a couple different options: A) You can take your microSD card out of the R12 and pop it into your computer. From there you can find all your individual tracks and can further mix/sample/master them in a DAW program if you want. B) You can go to the Fader view on the R12's touchscreen and there is an option to Mix down at the top. Simply go to the beginning of your song, activate Mix down, and hit record. Once you play your project you can adjust the faders in real time to create your mix. Try to keep your Master output primarily between -12 and -8 dB. Hit stop when you are done. The R12 just mixed down your project into a L-R stereo .WAV file that you can find in the AUDIO folder of the SD card. Just take that .WAV file and load it on anything - you can burn a CD or email the file to your phone or load it onto a USB stick or something and then hook that up to the stereo in your car to play it. C) You can also apply an effects patch with the Mix down option in "B". You might want to create a patch that has some combo of EQ-Compression-Exciter or EQ-Compression-Reverb and then go into your individual tracks and turn up the send effect level to specific amounts (or leave some tracks at 0). That might help brighten up your mix.

The R12's firmware update to v2.00 adds support for an iPad control app. I'll cover the the functions of the iPad app in an upcoming video.
Where is this video?

Thank You Gaz !
You're welcome...and thanks for watching!

I had the same question, thank you for your response Gaz ! Also, I just updated my R12 to 2.00 following your vid and it went great
@@GazRendar Much appreciated.
My quest for simplicity isn't as simple as I'd wished for. 🙂
I am working a project on my R12, and some of the tracks are ‘greyed out”. Any advice to restore them?

I updated to version 2.3. Now loops and drum styles do not work for me. When listening, it says Error.
Лучшие бы я этого не делал.
I am sorry to hear that. I have not experienced that problem. You could try to factory reset the R12 to see if that fixes the problem.
