    "You say with the benefit of hindsight, but they had the scripts. They could read them."
    That is genuinely one of the best quotes I've ever heard for why so much bad writing these days is inexcusable. We always hear "they're going to learn from their mistakes last season. So it'll be better this time." But... they could have learned from their mistakes... by writing a second draft. And before someone says "oh but they couldn't have known how to do it right until they got audience feedback", they, are, WRITERS. They are supposed to be BETTER at this than a bunch of TH-camrs. They shouldn't need the input of reviewers to know how to write a good story. The whole point of having a writing TEAM (aside from splitting the workload) is to have enough separate opinions to catch each other's mistakes. And if that's not enough, they could employ strategies similar to beta readers for novels.
    This is literally their job. The fact that they didn't understand their mistakes when they examined their draft means they won't understand why they're being criticised. So they'll either repeat these mistakes in Season 3 or over-correct. They're not going to 'get it'.

      Thank you. So many people have been saying the Writers strike was the big problem but in all honesty what we saw was the first draft ideas of what they wanted these characters to do this season and the Strike just revealed the issues without allowing them to change it.
      The whitewashing of Rhaenrya and Alicent is unforgivable and my final straw with this show.

      Yeah, but when the writing team comes from the factory assembly line, with the same exact mindset, skillset and talent, while clapping for themselves because their skin colors, genitals and who they sleep with are “diverse”, that’s what you get.

      @@lawendameowDid anyone address that ? Did they confront Rhaenyra about letting the smallfolk die to Vermithor ? Because I was under the impression that not a single character thought that it was an evil act
      Mysaria even absolved Rhaenyra of the terrible things she would have to put the smallfolk through in order to win this war. Like it's not even subtle at this point

    • @Timquan.

      I hated how decisive they made the smallfolk as well. Rheanys slaughters 100 plus people for her girl boss moment but when Cole walks through with Meleys's head they go, "oh nooo the Dragon who killed my cousin is dead I am sad and scared now because they are supposed to be God's, even though I worship the seven...." like wtf.
      Then there was the whole blockade bs. "OH no we don't have food because of Rheanyra's blockade. And now some strange lady who has been boldly talking against the crown is now saying that the Red Keep are feasting nightly despite us knowing how conservative Prince Aemond is and he is in charge now, oh well if she said it must be true... Oh what's this! Rheanyra the child slayer has graciously delivered us food after starving us by the God's and Dragons I guess, she is so cool...." seriously like wtf.

    • @yamatonadeshiko567
      @yamatonadeshiko567 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@doctorjames6197 Let's not expect much from Mysaria. That woman sold young women to pleasure men just so she could earn a fortune. So she obviously had no problem sacrificing the group of people that she was supposed to represent just for the sake of whatever her goal is.
      The show also has a habit of not addressing team black's crimes the way they do team green's, especially Aegon's. Daemon is the only one from the blacks that got called out a lot or had consequences for his crimes.
      For example, Rhaenys' mass murder in season 1 was just as bad as Aegon, Aemond and Daemon's crimes but you don't see that get talked about. It's even worse that the showrunners admitted to adding it just because they want to see Rhaenys doing something cool. That mass murder part was never in the book. And the dragon pit was supposed to have side exits that can be used without the casualties.
      But oh well, the show still has two more seasons. They can still use these unaddressed crimes as a build up for the smallfolk finally getting fed up because they will eventually.

  • @diegocamacho6477
    @diegocamacho6477 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

    One of the problems is that Alicent and Rhaenyra aren't really active protagonists in the source material once the war actually starts while they mostly dominated the prologue (It's also a problem in F&B. Like I remember doing a double take when Aegon dueled Baela because I straight up forgot who she was. Why do you always make the people actively doing things the false-leads George).
    When you invest so much time in them in season 1, you have to either change the story to make them more active and hope it works or stick to it and audiences have to make do with characters that didn't really get that much focus. This season kind of tried to do both and failed. Aegon II proved that shifting the focus to the more active characters could have worked.

    It’s an unfortunate sign of the times we’re living in, that you can’t have two women fighting each other. The story works better as originally written (an ‘evil’ step mom vs her bratty stepdaughter.) Alternatively, if they wanted to go the tortured best friends route, they needed to give viewers an actual villain to root against (maybe the “evil maester” conspiracy theory.) This season was boring, minus the Jurassic Park Vermithor scene.

    100% agree on the bottle episode idea but I thought it was super obvious it was Hugh and Ulf. As soon as the idea to recruit bastards came up my wife and I were joking about who the new dragon riders could possibly be.
    The way they were forced into the plot was so contrived that it _HAD_ to be them.
    Two guys with silver hair, one who openly said he was a Targaryen, and we had no other reason to care about them. It felt very paint by numbers. "Ok, we have to introduce these guys before they become dragonriders so let's start following them earlier and they can represent the plight of the smallfolk."
    Except the writers forget to make us care. We never got a sense of loss, we were just told everyone was struggling. Every time they were on the screen my wife was like, "No one cares about this. Go back to the story". Which is probably why we remembered them (but also didn't know their names).

    I was so excited when this show was in preproduction for getting my Cersei with strategic acumen moment in Alicent. Cersei is compared to Alicent by George and in the text.
    Alicent, a woman based off of historical powerhouses like Eleanor of Aquitaine and Isabella of France. Women who learned how to work the patriarchy to their advantage and very much knew how to manipulate their children. They grasped power for their children unabashedly and in turn grasped it for themselves.
    We could have had Eleanor of Aquitaine versus Empress Matilda, a blood thirsty woman over qualified for the position her chuckle-fuck relative usurped with the manipulation from far smarter people.
    Instead we got this. Crafting female characters with limited flaws, especially in this kind of conflict, seems extremely anti-feminist imo. We went from having female villains who do evil things for petty reasons to women who do nothing. When Cersei, Queen of Thorns, Margery, Dany I'm George's work to emulate. You know, fucking people and not idols. Even mother Theresa had flaws ffs.

  • @Timquan.
    @Timquan. 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    Another part about S1 Alicent is that it wasnt just the insult to her religion that began her mobilization against Rheanyra. It was the implication of how immoral and wanton she truly was and it instilled the belief in Alicent, that Rheanyra was capable of hurting her children to ensure her claim, a claim up to that point that she has not acted on strengthing when given the CHOICE to choose her own husband, as well as Alicent who supported her claim and believed her harmless up to that point. This was proven at Driftmark.

      She wrote for orange is the new black. She’s a lesbian and married to a woman irl. She’s obsessed either way injecting lesbian stuff into everything. It worked for orange is the new black because the setting was a women’s prison but this is not the same setting or story in HotD. Not that there aren’t gay romances in the asoiaf series but it literally never happened between Alicent and Rhaenyra or Rhaenyra and Mysaria ever in the story or George would have included it. If she wanted to write about lesbians she could’ve written about the story of Rhaena Targaryen (daughter of Aenys) and her lover Elissa Farman during a maegor’s rebellion show. It’s just self jerk fan fiction to force it into the dance of the dragons for no reason. It’s like how there are stories of poc characters and yet they always choose to turn the white characters into poc instead of the actually poc characters with authentic poc stories (cough cough, the Velaryons vs Nettles)

    People say that fans hated the ending because it didn't have battles bit it's way more than that.
    Writing decisions are made only in order not to repeat the source material and compete with the author of the book in the ability to write characters and stories. Only they are noticeably losing and I now understand exactly why George was so disappointed and refused to participate in writing the third season.
    Writers make changes without thinking why the plot was written this way in the first place in the book. They also lose cause-consequences relation and motivations of the charachers, while doing it.
    But to be fair, I'm asking too much from this show-because I would remark that the characters are not consistent with the SHOW canon either. For example: They made Alicent and Rhaenyra hate each other for 20 years (just like in the book) but suddenly both of them want peace? Both of them don't care about the deaths of their son&grandson? Really? Then why didn't they try to make peace BEFORE everything got worse? Previously, way smaller things made them ignore each other for years but now they don't care about safety or their children. Alicent for 10 years was holding a grudge because her father got fired but here we are - nobody cares for Jaehaerys! Apparently, Rhaenyra even forgot that Luke was avenged ! She wants another son! Brilliant! ( By the way, the writers already confirmed that the sept reunion was a fanservice,I suspect this meeting is too. Very bad the show was ready to sacrifice all the logic just to please fans)
    Even Aemond&Helaena small scene ruined Helaena's characher and broke the lore - from what point did she start to understand her prophecies soo clearly and why did she want to run away with Alicent 5 minutes ago if she saw everyone's fate already? Doesn't she care for her family ? Because it looked like she wants to use her powers only for herself.And how long have dreamers been astrally moving into other people's heads?
    I really don't want to discuss this episode much and I can't. The only scenes I like were with Cole, Gwayne , Ulf, and Tyland. And I know the reason why: the secondary characters have a superficial description and little screen time, so it's impossible to screw it up. By in the mix with good acting (and it must be admitted that almost all of the actors in the show are excellent) it gives these characters advantages of being interestingly and consistently written. Also, note that all those listed characters are all male, which means they are allowed to have flaws in this show. Yes, that's right, for some reason "women don't want blood, they are all peaceful" narrative is repeated over and over again. It made them all bland and illogical.Even Alys, as other women in this season, is just another smallfolk champion because "women want peace, men are violent". Seriously, why can't women be just people? You know, have flaws, desires and bad habits?
    The only main character that got fair treatment turned out to be Aegon, and I suspect that happened thanks to incredible work of the actor Tom Glynn-Carney. Because other charachers just don't make sense, so he must be an exception. I mean, deaths don't have any affect on charachers, previous motivations were forgotten or replaced with prophecy stuff. This season feels like a huge filler because nothing has consequences, we see the same scenes over again, and the show refuses to show both sides of the story equally bad.
    I don't know if season 3 , even with incredible writers and help of GRRM, will be able get out of this hole. I think the damage have been made and it is useless to hope that the story will become better, only if not on the condition that they ignore season 2 almost completely.
    This episode deserves 2/10. The season as a whole 5,-8 or 6/10 and I'm being generous.

    This season is summed up in a phrase "Buried up an entire Moutain. Found a normal Mouse."
    Ive lost alot of interest in series tbh. Way too many changes,deviations,and cut moments and characters all sacrificed to focus on Rhaenrya and Alicent by removing all of their villanous attributes. They are not willing to potray these characters as the villanous snakes that revealed their venom as things got more desperate.
    Imagine the rivalry between Lucretia and Illithyia from Spartacus Blood and Sand and thats what we missed out on.
    Another issue that no one talks about is how rushed Season 1 was to get us all hyped for the war to start,only for season 2 to immediately take hard pump on the brakes and go "but wait,SEASON 3 is when the war will start."
    We spent all 8 episodes at the same 3 locations with same characters going over the same shit.
    They turned Daemon,the most interesting and dangerous character of the entire Dance of Dragons and he spent all his time at Harrenhal like a dad who got kicked out of his house by his wife.
    They refused to show us anything interesting like him courting the lords of the Riverlands and then they had to remind us about the ending of Game of thrones AGAIN?
    Alicent has gone down as one the most Butchered characters in Book to Screen.

      I generally enjoy how George has shown prophecy in ASOIAF. not so much about the prophecy itself but how people interpret it and react. It's why I'm always suspect that people think Lightbringer is up like it's going to be Jon or Dany or any combo, facing down the Others. It will be messy and dark, most likely. • @siyamafuya7163

      That or what I was thinking still on the storyline of rhaenrya blaming rhaena i think there will be more of a build towards rhaena and daemons relationship (both his daughters) and I think it will be a situation where (of course with what happens at the gullet and also baby viserys) daemon will be torn because he could also blame her but because it is his daughter he will have a harder time of fully resenting her. Rhaena i think will feel completely guilty her whole life because of this and if they mesh both rhaena and nettles stories (from what I know I think rhaena does remain in the vale with Joffrey until the end of the war) daemon will allow her to leave back to the vale to hide out create a new identity. Or another option is when he returns back to harrenhal rhaena joins him but the sends her back to the vale to flee before the battle with aemond. I like the idea of adding the element of daemon still being a father and choose his loyalty to his wife or not wanting harm to his daughter because why can’t it be both? He will still be loyal to her till the end but that’s his blood as well. Him knowing about the prophecy adds another layer. Him wanting a win for his house and family means she must sit the iron throne. He won’t turn back now and even not knowing what will exactly happen there is still that bit of hope he has that somewhere along the line (I.e their bloodline with dany but he doesn’t know that) their house is restored
      I think rhaenryas paranoid will play into this towards end of S3 and going into S4 and since they’ve already covered the “trust” aspect of daemon and rhaenryas relationship now rather than later (though it could still come back up but for different reasons) daemon will start to see her going more deep into her paranoia and I think this could be when he tells rhaena to leave and then maybe that’s when she feels like he betrayed her and knowing daemon the idea that rhaenrya not trusting him AGAIN is the final straw and goes and faces aemond in proving that he is. And when you have their reunion in the finale and making it clear that she doesn’t want him to leave her again and him saying he couldn’t even if he tried it could one of those situations where him leaving her meant that he had no other choice but it was for her to finally grant her the wish of wanting aemond Targaryen. And they could change it to her knowing why he left
      Coming back to the rhaena topic. I think if they mesh the storylines I wouldn’t be mad at it because if rhaena does get sent her away by daemons order/follows him to harrenhal then flees it would work with why (spoilers😅) after the war she returns back to kinglanding with baby viserys. If I remember I think the baela who writes to her to find viserys and bring the brothers back again. I could be wrong of the whole events but something like that

      This version of Rhaenyra wouldn't do that, though. She was still talking peace with Alicent after the Greens killed her son Luc and caused her to have a miscarriage from the stress. And I doubt she'd be shocked that Daemon would protect his daughter. In the books, Nettles was either Daemon's young mistress or bastard daughter, so Rhaenyra did not think of her as family and had reason to distrust her and want her gone. So she was shocked when Damon's loyalty was with Nettles, sparking yet another devastating blow to her reign and making her more paranoid and unstable. If she thinks Daemon would just let her kill Rhaena, it would be more delusional than her getting upset and surprised when Alicent was protecting her son Aegon from getting executed by her.

      not nearly as compelling. of course daemon will choose his daughter unless he's a psychopath. him choosing a lowborn girl is groundbreaking tho. besides there's a point to rhaena in the book that is gone from the show

      I’m increasingly worried that the remaining seasons of the show are just going to make me fed up with it. Have to admit to being a Book Fundamentalist and, having since re-read the portions of F&B, feel they are producing a much inferior story. Starting with Blood & Cheese - the absence of Maelor and Alicent not being there but in bed with Cole instead!

      Guys, absolutely agree with all you’ve said in a video. Huge disappointment, if they do not change narrative, I am afraid we will end up with the final scene of A and R dying in each other’s arms with a kiss. All dynamic between characters reminds me of fan fiction but not a professional writing.

    And the story is wrong because rhaenyra wouldnt kill innocents and NEVER DID even when they deserved it and should have burned the characters and the story is very different im being soo negative because the show could have been great if they adapted it right.. even with their own version its contradicting and confusing in which i wouod ask why did the character do this but then fire and blood counterpart would never do this.. like he so weak and the show STASTES THE BLOODY OBVIOUS WHICH ANNOYS ME... with otto saying errors were made and haelena saying you were swallowed up in the gods eye and y'know your part pulling a whole different character out the blue from episode 7 i mean haelena is queen her mother remains to call her "MY QUEEN" she isnt weak just vulnerable because of what daemon did devastating the whole of the greens with one blow that is why he my favorite character his blow isnt without great impact and damage but they ruined the show for me...

    I just want the blood-covered, boar-stabbing, white stag-affirmed Rae back. I'm team black and I've hated her this season. I think Harwin would have disliked this version of her too.
    Edit: WAIT, the writers thought the staircase scene showed them being on the same page??? 😂 wow they're out of touch in how the scenes come across. A looks at H angrily bc he just randomly remembered she exists for a sec and they walk away from each other, that scene? I don't have any hope for S3.

    Most of this season's lack of action is George's fault. He wrote a book in which most of the characters do basically nothing between just major events. If the writers haven't invented a few bits -which led most to complain that they were not being faithful to the material - this would have been even MORE boring. Rhaenyra just crying in sadness in Dragonstone, Daemon just standing by in Harrenhal while the army is mustered, Alicent wandering about in KL, etc.
    I just think the writers need to have even more freedom to strand away from the book to make a more interesting season 3. And if George complains about the faithfulness, then he should have written a better book.

    • @madhistoryn
      @madhistoryn 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      Or they could focus on other interesting characters instead of focusing on the boring Rhaenyra, Alicent and Damon. And news flash, this story would not exist without GRRM so if they are weak writers perhaps they are the wrong people to adapt the show.

    • @Xbitrate
      @Xbitrate 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@madhistoryn Agreed. He is the mastermind behind all of this and should be praised for it. All I'm saying is that F&B is a very weak book in regards to character action/motivation, thus, some deviation from the material should be mostly welcomed.

    I dislike the show the story and characters arent the same, rhaenyra was already heir so she is defending her throne and the greens becomes more impactful when they took it from her i kean the actions is sensless even they really weakened the characters and now soon more death will come and they minimize it all by not showing us their reactions and the people speaking on rhaenyra killing the heir but her son was killed though its rightfully so she would become more ruthless i mean the characters have the wrong emotions in the middle of war i dont even like that the war is being made into a comedy causing tye ear to be more invaluable especially with prophecy they are even speeding up the story what of the gopd of kingslanding, aegon and larys shouldnt leave kingslanding yet and they dont go to ESSOS THEY WENT TO A BRILLIANT PLACE UNDERNEATH EVERYONE NOSE THIS WAR IS GREAT BECAUSE THE CHARACTERS DOES THINGS THAT ARE VERY CUNNING AND STRATEGIC YET UNTHINKABLE and honestly the character could have had these emotions earlier on they couod have spent time with jace and his visits i feel like season 2 is very messy.. the fact the war begins NOT because alicents motivation for securing the throne or usurping it from her stepdaughter...for her son Aegon because there were no friendship the love or whatever respect they had for each other was lost because alicent had the kings children and viserys kept rhaenyra as heir...
