    Yes I offer power ranking for my customers well as detaching and like you said depending on the area of the size of the yard you have to price it accordingly because so much working out to do. Thank you for the information it was very informative 👍👍👍 I live in Virginia Beach Virginia this time of year I'm putting down a lot of rye grass because the clients want their seasonal grass to make they probably look good for Christmas

    Im in Ottawa Canada...i fertilize regularly & in the later fall i cut grass short, dethatch it then seed in 1st week of Nov.
    When snow comes its weight pushes dormant seed to contact level...Then in spring it melts providing water to begin germination, once the ground is no longer soft i fertilize it with Scotts Max green.

    Awesome video! We offer dethatching, I think it’s the main difference between us and the main weed n feed guys. It’s so good for any lawn, clear the shit out. We do our main chemical kill in august, either in the mornings or later august for temps. Then come back 4 weeks later and do the dethatch, aerate, seed, fert/nutrients, topdress. I feel like we don’t make a great profit off of dethatching just because we price it like aeration, but it really does take more time and effort. I’ll try raising prices. Thanks for the knowledge

      For sure try to raise your price. Out here Midwest area $60 and up to aerate 5k sft property. I will be doing detaching this year as my first time and I’m thinking $125-$150 would be a good starting point to detach and clean up. Power rake like he mentions going in deeper of course the price will change. There is more work to be done and it will take longer,. Best of luck

    I've used a gas-powered thatcher followed up with a gas-powered aerator to remove moss in the PNW. I then threw down starter fertilizer, seed and covered with a light top dressing of compost and raked it all in. Took days and lasted about 2 yrs...and the moss was back. I have too much shade and way too much rain (months of it) for a healthy lawn, so I'm just trying to upkeep it until I sell and move somewhere that has more appealing weather.🤣

      Yup sounds about right. Here in the PNW moss is always a challenge. I always tell my clients “you know what they say about the only things guaranteed in life are death and taxes. Well here in the PNW it’s death, taxes and the moss will come back.” 😂 Thanks for watching.

    • @LawnCareBusinessSuccess
      @LawnCareBusinessSuccess 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry I’m not familiar with Bermuda lawns and the ideal times to power rake them. Usually power raking is not done in the summer months as it can be to stressful for the lawn or new seed to recover or grow. Thanks for watching.

  • @delinquense
    @delinquense ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hmm, ...not so sure about that
    ... tynes are for the scarifying, which can prepare the lawn for overseeding by leaving the slits in the ground. Or aerating, as it certainly does open up the lawn to a lower level.
    Completely different attachment than what the power rake uses.
    Power raking doesn't have tynes, it uses the wire/springs to take a layer of lawn debris off the surface, not the thatch. The thatch is below the grass. There is no way to remove the thatch easily without damaging the grass since the thatch is below the level of the grass.
    As for dethatching, the name for dethatching is a bit of a misnomer.
    True dethatching can really only be done using a chemical process... unless you use scarifier and rip up a lot or most of your grass.

    Great video man. One question...What does the lime do?

    • @LawnCareBusinessSuccess
      @LawnCareBusinessSuccess 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A quick Google search brings up this explanation. Lawns need lime when low soil pH starts inhibiting the availability of nutrients. Soil pH preferences vary between regional lawn grasses, but most grasses prefer soil pH between 5.8 and 7.2. Warm-season grasses tolerate slightly lower pH, while cool-season grasses prefer pH slightly higher.1,2 When within preferred pH ranges, the nutrients lawn grasses need most - including added nitrogen from lawn fertilizers - stay available for grass to use. When pH strays too far in either direction, even plentiful nutrients are restricted. Lime restores balance in overly acidic soil to bring pH back to optimal growing levels. Furthermore here in the pacific north west where I am the constant rain always effects the soils ph level so we add lime to every lawn every year. Thanks for watching.

    If I’m going to dethatch, then scarify, then aerate before I bring in sand to level and overseed! Is it best to give the lawn a good deep watering a few days in advance so the lawn/soil is damp when I do it or is it best for it to be dryer? I’ve heard some people say you don’t want the lawn/soil to be damp when you dethatch but you do want it to be damp for when you both scarify and aerate! Your opinion on that? Thanks in advance

    • @LawnCareBusinessSuccess
      @LawnCareBusinessSuccess 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer it to be dry for using the power rake, otherwise it just makes a huge mess and is hard to clean up as the debris is mixed with mud basically. The aerating is best when damp but I’ve never had an issue unless it’s like the middle of a dry summer. The rest of the year it seems to core fine. Thanks for watching.

    • @LawnCareBusinessSuccess
      @LawnCareBusinessSuccess 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure if you have enough areas to justify the rental, otherwise I would just manually rake the spots. Then I would aerate, overseed, put down a starter fertilizer and top dress for best results. Thanks for watching.

  • @halflife82
    @halflife82 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Your terms are backwards. A Power Rake is just that, a POWERED RAKE. Just like a hand rake removes dead grass off the top, so does a power rake. It ONLY removes dead grass and does NOT touch the thatch layer which is the top portion of the actual soil where shallow root-balls, and partially broken down grass sits. If you’re removing this actual thatch layer, it’s known as DETHATCHING because that’s what you’re doing. You are “SCARIFYING” the thatch layer, deep down into the soil. Remember, dead grass that is visible to the eye down between the grass blades is NOT thatch. You measure your thatch thickness by taking a soil sample plug, which is located in the upper part of the soil.

    • @rwgeach
      @rwgeach 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, scarify is just a fancy word for cut that includes the result of the cutting.
      rake unfortunately can also include scratching and scraping, so the words are interchangeable and products like thatching rakes only further muddy the waters.
      dethatching is a general term that shouldn't really be defined when contrasting scarifying/raking.

      I bought it at a local tool rental place about 14 years ago that was selling off ex-rental units for $300. It needed new wheels when I got it. I bought the new wheels and used the machine for a few years as is with minimal maintenance and belts. I bought all new tines for it 2 years ago. After I bought it I wanted to find an aerator as well. So I started going to other tool rental places and just asking if they had any old rental units for sale. Since it was the fall season at the time and aerations are not as popular here in the fall they were willing to sell me a nice used aerator that needed nothing for $1000. What would be the cost of this entire process? The dethatching, seeding and topsoil? Approximately. Say for half an acre.

    • @LawnCareBusinessSuccess
      @LawnCareBusinessSuccess 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I service typically 1/4 acre or less sized properties, and it all depends on how thick the moss in my case is and how many passes to get it out would take. Also when I’m doing the complete package it consists of putting a moss control down first and waiting at least a week. Then I mow it extra short and start doing the power rake and cleanup along with an aeration and hauling debris to the dump. Then I return to put down the seed, lime, starter fertilizer and top dress with soil. For an average city lot anywhere from $1500 to $2000 for the entire job start to finish. Thanks for watching.

If so is hard to match some one who will use a very low cost pre emergent like prodiamine and then when crabgrass and other annuals are reduced 85% or more and the owner has never seen any thing like it, he becomes the best word of mouth advertising.
    Does this go on? I have no clue but I wonder if they all have some 2-4,D available if they sense its profitable enough.
    Similar to 15 years ago the cable guy would hook you up with some extra channels not in your package for free if you left him $50 on the table, but didn't officially hand it to him.

    • @LawnCareBusinessSuccess
      @LawnCareBusinessSuccess 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven’t used herbicides in my business in over 12 years. Most people know the products are banned here. When I chat with clients about their lawns most express no interest in having chemical weed killers used on there lawns because of pets of kids. The biggest issue here on the west coast is moss. It grows very quickly with all the rain we get. Putting iron on the lawn kills the moss. Literally turns it black within a few hours. Makes it safe to power rake out of the lawn without worry of spreading through air born spores from the agitation created when power raking. Thanks for watching.

    For dethatch what setting do you place the machine?

    • @LawnCareBusinessSuccess
      @LawnCareBusinessSuccess 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      For dethatching you just want the tines to lightly touch the surface. So put the machine on a hard surface like a sidewalk or driveway. With the machine off, turn the times by hand until they are hanging at there lowest point. From there use the height adjustment knob to raise or lower the times until they just touch the surface of the pavement. That will give you a good starting point. From there you can start dethatching and use the adjustment knob to micro adjust the height as needed. Thanks for watching.

      I just get belts from a local equipment dealer. Took the old one in and they matched the size. In the past I also got them from a local tractor supply type store. Good luck with it.

    Wrong, scarifying digs into the soil to let oxygen and water in, dethatching and power raking pull out the thatch to expose the soil between the blades of grass

    • @Rex69Rutherford
      @Rex69Rutherford 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bruh, take a look at the pics.... a typical power raker will beat the sheeite out of the soil also... so, there's no difference when you scarify

      Not happy with the first landscapers that did my lawn and we are new to Tennessee. I am afraid that I might have to start over with seeding I am seeing patch spots. Of dirt

      Oh ok. I was not expecting a home owner to be watching my videos. I guess I forgot that it’s not just other lawn Care business owners that can watch my videos on TH-cam. 😂 Best of luck finding a company that better suits your needs.
