Now that looks like fun.... I felt like I was there. I just started to use my fly rod after several years and forgot just how cool it is. Thanks, from Michigan ✌
That duck under the fallen tree is a textbook approach for a small Driftless Area stream like this one. Avoid walking on the high banks and keep low. Trout can sense a large dark moving shadows from a surprising distance so always strive to keep your shadow off the water. I recognize that stream, it's not far from where I grew up. Those exposed limestone bluffs are key to prime Trout water in the Driftless. The limestone provides the proper PH level for reproduction and growth. When you see that aqua green tint in the water, it's usually good Trout water. Well done Drew!
Yep, I avoid standing on the ridge as much as possible! Can't say enough, how avoiding the easy routes...trails, casting areas, and other places where that look worn has helped! Love hearing that kind of info...not many know that these days! Thank u!
I only recently discovered your channel and want to tell you how much I appreciate you getting the fish into hand and back in the water so quickly. Too many beginning fishers play them to death and don’t wet their hands before handling fish. Subbed, notified and shared.
Thank u, trying to be a better example. Many people are learning thru what they find on yt....and there's a bunch of people making videos while the learn too! Fortunately, I was taught to fish before social media by a responsible angler, my dad lol!
The one linked in the video (a card should pop up when I show the brown with the fly in its mouth) was solid and a few in the description...Pt, bwo and caddis!
Really don't have an average...I guess or look at where the fish are and adjust as necessary. 1.5xdepth is a good place to start. I'm hesitant to say, 3ft b/c...unweighted flies fished with a sz 6 spit shot might only be a foot under the surface. Where a bh nymph and sz 4 split shot might be 2.5ft under water. The best advice I can give is fish a foot deeper than u think the depth is and add weight until you snag bottom...then remove some.
I would avoid northern Michigan. The fishing is really hit or miss. Wisconsin on the other hand is always so much better. A lot more consistent. Bigger fish too.
I've had the orvis bugout system for most of the year. The front chest part that you saw is super handy when I wear waders and a waist pack. It allows me to carry tippet, floatant and several fly boxes in a easy to reach spot. The coolest part is it attaches to a backpack which I used during my 2 month road trip this summer. Been really happy with the bugout system!
Another great video. Just you, a cool stream and fishing. The editing is awesome. Always hear the water and fly line. Just like being there on the water.
Thank you, always good to hear. Makes it easy on me not searching for music...my ears use to bleed trying to find the right music and it was never right lol!
What a day! Nice size fish too! I saw that you made an effort to wet your hand before you handled the fish. A lot of anglers dont explain why it’s so important. Keep on Truckin! Alex
@@LooknFishy I guess I must have known that since I did watch that video previously. Jeez....yeah I wear the orvis pro as well and they work perfect here in western Montana. Fished the big hole river the last two days. Love watching your vids!
Just got back from a camping trip and fished a small creek all weekend. It was a blast seeing the cutthroat come out from the rocks. Certainly something to be said about small creek fishing.
Ime, has more to do with food, not stream size. A small stream with abundant, high quality and available bugs will produce big fish! This section of stream appeared to have some silting issues, which limits bug habitat. Another section a few miles away had some great quality! A good example, is my backpacking Wimineche CO video...small but had amazing quality fish!
@@leetreado3801 not sure the state, but this looks to be the drift less (or similar geography. I grew up in NE Iowa. We have some good fish, because we have some good food sources. Lots of limestone spring creeks. The key is to find areas not frequented or C&R. Caught my personal best Brown (21”) from a creek in NE IA. Didn’t even see/feel the strike, just saw the smaller fish explode from around where my bugger was and set. Miss the area, can’t wait to visit my parents and take my dad fishing.
Ah ha ! Looks like a bit more of the drift less area in Wisconsin . Some time, make sure to give bear Creek a try . SW Sauk county, and there is access of State Highway 130 . There are some good Browns there . Again, part of that area I mentioned in a response to an earlier video of yours . And there is public areas to enter the stream .
This stream or creek doesn’t look like much but the insect population could be high considering the terrain there. The only theory I have for the health and volume of fish you caught there.
Just a guess on depth. I start by trying to get to the bottom then adjust as necessary depending on what I see. This day...nymphs early but started to see occasional rises so I switched to an emerger and fished higher up. Got a video in my tips section where I walk thru nymphing a run start to finish and explain way more detail on the adjustments I make.
Haha, yah I almost titled this video, fly fishing a small stream most people would walk past searching for bigger water. But knew that wasn't really accurate. Hear it all the time though!
It is soft and silted in some spots for sure. I generally try to stay out of the stream or on the edges, which isn't bad wading. I do prefer wet wading season, just b/c hiking and wading is easier. Try to avoid waders as much as possible!
Thanks for reminding me...I forgot to add the card. One of the productive patterns was my PT variation, the fly tying vid I did a few weeks back. But with a small black glass bead. Also, a sz 18 bwo emerger...put the description and other flies in the description of the video.

How do you deal with ticks + chiggers? Do you just worry about it after you get them or do you use some sort of bug repellent?
I don't worry about them in April when the night temps are below freezing or when wearing waders. When it warms, I use a deet based repellent.
Just curious is the creek bottom soft an silty? Is it easy wading?
