Harrison Ford showed so much poise and promise in this, probably his first major film where he had a somewhat significant role. All his hallmarks are on display here - the attention to detail, the character bits, the ability to express so much while saying so little. He more than holds his own with Gene Hackman, who was like one of the biggest movies stars in the world by then and an amazing actor who was in the pocket at this point. And of course Francis Ford Coppola's brilliant staging and directing.

I actually think this is Ford's best acting part ever. And its Coppola's best film. Ford is a bad guy in the film. Everyone should watch it, its not only an intriguing story, it is beautifully made. An all star cast, with not one mediocre performance in the film. Even Cindy Williams and Teri Garr, who are really comic actors, were good.
Agreed with all of this. The Conversation was Coppola's baby, written, directed, produced by him. His intellect and eye for detail is so apparent here. As for Ford, I love that he added little details to the character, choosing the wardrobe and bringing in the cookies himself.
@@gtella31 His part in Apocalypse Now was shot BEFORE he was cast in Star Wars (1976). That's pretty much the reason why his role is so small. He was probably the most successful working actor in the film by the time it came out.

Well, he did play Elliot's Principal in "E.T.", a softly comical, disapproving authority figure rather than an outright baddie, never seen from the front so doing all his acting through voice and a single very expressive hand. It was sadly deleted because it broke the conceit of seeing everything through a kid's eyes.
