I am exceptionally disappointed in our ground troops so far in 10th. The mech Aeldari build was so good for most of the edition so far that none of our boots-on-the-ground units got any adjustments to make them feasible options when other things got nerfed. Our codex can’t come fast enough in my opinion.
Still loving the Unit Focus videos. And am looking forward to the new player video as I greatly need it. All the Phoenix Lords and Harlequin's are what drew me into our pointy eared friends, Maugan Ra's model is amazing and this week picked up Jain Zar, as really like the sculpt on that model too.. Although almost all videos say that a they're not competitive, i'm not looking to try to win tournaments, I just want models that look cool and have some great lore behind them. It's just nice to know what they're capable of on the tabletop.
Always obey the rule of cool. You'll enjoy the hobby more if you build/play units you like. Most of your opponents are probably doing the same and not running meta lists. My version of this is refusing to get war walkers because they're idiotic.
@@Wybrand418 I agree, I've always liked the looks wraiths as a walker. But the War Walker looks kinda dumb. Would much prefer a Wraith inspired War walker then the baby carrier inspired.
I ran Maugan in a 10 elf reaper squad out of a Wave Serpent in a casual game against marines. They were very effective. A Solitaire, Asurmen or Karandras work quite nicely as a supporting combat character out of a second Falcon with Fire Dragons. I have two of the 2nd edition Exarchs with flail of skulls, I like to play them in in casual games as they're cool models.
That's exactly what I'm going for in my 1000 pts this week (the 10 man Reapers squad with MR in a WS). Any tips on how to use them? I was thinking maybe the WS isn't necessary since the reapers' range is so huge
@@emilefortier1688 Ok, here's something to try. If not using the Wave Serpent, deploy in cover. Preferably on a piece of terrain tall enough for plunging fire. You can still use a tempest launcher whilst not presenting a target, use Rangers or scorpions to tempt out a target, preferably Rangers as they can run away D6", then pop out, hit it with AP2/3. Fire and fade back again. If there isn't a counter threat you can stay out for a silly amount of anti-infantry overwatch shots. Although there are better options for overwatch, Warp Spiders for auto hits and the Avatar of Khaine with a fate dice.
At this point in time (March 2024) what does a competitive Eldar list look like? I know Wraithguards got nerfed and Wraithknights aren't as cheesy anymore with the nerf to how Fate Dice are used. I've also heard that a lot of our troops aren't as effective as they should be or used to be, so I'm wondering if Mechdar is the way to go now.
Essentially, competiive eldar lists rely on one durable and deadly bully unit in combination with 5-6 units of overwhelming hard target elimination and usually 3-5 scoring units. (In this case, 5)
Thanks for the video, I play very casual games as Altansar and I just picked up one of the old Maugan Ra models so this was very well timed for me. I recently used him in my first game in a while (Also my first game in 10th) and I was pretty on the fence about including him again, after this I might still consider running him with phantasm reapers. Also, I've used your website for a long time now as my only occasional touchstone with how to play/build Eldar outside of my own reading through the codex etc as none of my friends play Eldar, I really should have noticed earlier but its lovely to find you also have a youtube channel which I can look at. Thanks for the time you put into this and keep up the great work!
"If you want more reaper fire, don't spend 130 pts on Maugan Ra, spend 80 more pts and get more reapers". Ouch, I feel attacked. Even with the recent point decrease on Maugan Ra, and increase on reapers, I feel like this point STILL stands.
I ran him in a game with the big dark reaper block and it was shocking how poorly that group did. Love the models and looking to try out these new ways to play
I think you hit the nail on the head with the. Phoenix Lords. They all need that resurrection/phoenix gem ability. If they all had that I would turn out a limit in the number you can take to two. We don't want the final battle coming too soon!!
Maugan Ra is such a nice looking model, and reapers are one of my top favorite units that I have used both quite a bit. I expect nothing from them, but they have performed well enough. Can't say they've carried the game or done anything crazy. I do wish they at least felt more dangerous, or they would just make Maugan Ra's gun match the squads.
Awesome video Brent - always love the content and value your insight. The Patreon community is definitely worth the money, great group of Eldar enthusiasts!
Great video! I hope he gets better in the codex, maybe give him loan opp, more ap, or something crazy like a plus one to wound buff or being able to overwatch at 36"
I'd love to see them add a rule that lets you resurrect a phoenix lord only if it's leading a unit of it's corresponding aspect shrine. You remove the exarch from the unit and place the phoenix lord back on the table, representing the exarch stepping into the phoenix lord armour.
Cool thematic idea but that would only ever (rarely) come up if the phoenix lord were to be killed by precision weapons. Since leaders are, otherwise, always the last dudes to die in their unit.
@@aaronstorey8620 Oh, right. True enough. I haven't played much since 8th edition, so the current rules aren't really my strong suit. For my part, just some kind of thematic phoenix lord and exarch interaction would be very welcome.
Could be a niche strat or enhancement in an aspect warrior-focused detachment. Maybe not requiring the Phoenix Lord be attached. Maybe an enhancement on an Autarch, tho probably not worth it to kill an Autarch to bring back a Phoenix Lord.
Maugan Ra, the phoenix lord that is supposed to train the dark reapers in the use of the shuriken cannon... but for some unkonwn reason they decided to train in the use small rocket launchers 🙃
I think the problem with most Phoenix Lords is that they don't know what they want to do. For their points, they don't do enough damage, and they are too expensive to be a support character for their aspects. The 2 exceptions are Fuegan, and maybe Karandras (who is cheap enough with decent damage into most targets)
Really hoping aspect warriors and especially Phoenix Lords get a bit of a glow up in the codex when we eventually get it. Would love to be able to add a bit of variety to competitive lists.
Something I think isn't talked about enough is what makes a unit good or bad for the points. Maybe the death jester and maugen ra are a good example of this
I wish the phoenix lords were a bit better overall, also, not that Fuegan or fire dragons are bad, but why are they t3 now? I don’t think it would make them suddenly too powerful if they were their usual t4??? Strange
For their lore of being near primarch-powerlevel pseudo perpetuals, these Phoenix Lords sure do suck balls don't they? Shame really, I feel like Feugan's ability of getting back up on a 2+ should be a Phoenix Lord staple to begin with, as the only lore reason I know of Fuegan having it, is precisely the fact that any Exarch can don their gear in the extremely rare occasion they do fall in battle. Seems like a massive oversight. As they are now, all bar Fuegan are horrendously overcosted/underpowered. Hell, some could see up to a 50 points drop and STILL be a bit of a maybe/maybe not kind of consideration in list building. This chonker of a guy being the prime example. Why on earth spend 130 points on a guy that gets outclassed in everything he wants to do by a 90 point no-name chump with a 15 point enhancement? He himself sucks. The aspect he represents sucks. He's probably competing with Jain Zar for being the worst single "Epic Hero" in the entire game right now. She's also terrible and leading a terrible aspect. Same goes for Asurmen. Baharroth: Good aspect, awful character. Irillyth: awesome aspect, crap character. I doubt any balance dataslate changes will bring any of these up to par, so I'm really just holding out hope that when we get our codex these can finally shine.
