Fojnica is a populated place and the center of the municipality of the same name in the central part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Administratively, it belongs to Central Bosnia Canton.
Fojnica is located in the central part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, about 50 km west of Sarajevo and 587 m above sea level. It is known for the famous Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Spirit, with a rich library and collection.
The area of the municipality is 308 km2. It borders the following municipalities: Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje, Novi Travnik, Vitez, Busovača, Kiseljak, Kreševo and Konjic. A large part of the area of the municipality of Fojnica is occupied by plateaus, pastures and fields, 46% of the total area of the municipality, of which 10% are fields, 20% are plateaus and 16% are pastures.
Today, Fojnica is best known for its spa, the radioactivity and medicinal properties of which were tested at the end of the 19th century, and exploitation began after the First World War. Fojnica radioactive mineral water belongs to weakly mineralized thermal waters, with a temperature of 31.5 °C and a radioactivity strength of about 45 Mach units. It is effective in the treatment of all forms of rheumatism, bone and muscle diseases, diseases of the peripheral nervous system, etc.
There are 4 mountains on the territory of the municipality: Vranica - 2112m, Zec - 1800m, Zahor - 1400m and Pogorelica - 1432m.
The highest peak is called Nadkrstac and has an altitude of 2112 m, it is located on the Vranica mountain. Also in Vranica is the natural Prokoško Lake at an altitude of 1670 m.
The area of the entire municipality is rich in water resources. The rivers are rich in fish throughout the year. Three rivers flow through the area of the municipality of Fojnica: Željeznica, Dragača and Fojnica.
Lake Prokoško is located at an altitude of 1670 m on the Vranica mountain. It is known for the presence of Tritons, an endemic amphibian species, and attracts a large number of tourists.
