Angelina has a way of presenting a cover that forever changes the way people look at the song. This is a wonderful example of her genius. The arrangement, which was a collaboration between her and pianist Rob Christie, transforms the message from a call for honesty and fidelity in a romance to a prescription for healing the ills of the human race. Breathtaking. Wonderful reaction, Mike!

Thank you for returning to Angelina. Your reactions to her performances are always worth watching.
The song was written by Mark James, an American singer/songwriter, who recorded it the year it was written. The best known version, however, was that done by Elvis Presley. It was his last No 1 song. In the Wikipedia entry of the origins of the song, Mark James is said to have remarked "That late one night, he was fooling around on his Fender guitar and using his Hammond organ pedals for a bass line and came up with what he thought was a catchy melody. At the time, he was married to his first wife but still had feelings for his childhood sweetheart, who was married back in Houston. James's wife had suspicions about his feelings. He felt it was a confusing time for him and that all three were "caught in this trap that they could not walk out of."
Other singers covering this song invariably base their performance on that of Elvis, in that it is very "upbeat". Angelina took a very different path in that she read and understood the lyrics and what Mark James intended when writing them. To my mind, her rendition is much truer to the emotions of the song.
The children appearing in the video were Angelina's cousins Aurora (first) and then Athena - daughters of her uncle Michael Astar, and then her sister Juliette. I would hazard a guess that they were included to emphasise that children are very important to Angelina and her family.
Confession! I have never been a great fan of Elvis Presley, although I do like some of his earlier recordings, and I had never heard of the song "Suspicious minds" but knew that Angelina would completely take ownership of it, and she did. It was beautiful. After listening to it several times, I decided to download the lyrics to see whether she kept to the original structure. She didn't, and the song is all the better for it. For me, that she started with the Bridge of the song is very significant and, I feel, very indicative of Angelina's "up front" transparency. She was declaring that it was important that their love did not die, and then carries on to say why she feels as she does. Others first say how they feel and then, almost as an afterthought, assure their love they don't want it to end. For me, it is whether I feel the singer is genuine about the situation and wishes it could be resolved or whether the singer understands the situation but thinks the blame is on her/his partner but feels the need to assure them they don't want it to end (until somebody else comes along).

Great reaction. I love how the song really takes on a new meaning the way she sings it.

Great reaction! Angelina likes to slow down the music to give more space for the lyrics. As you say, with those breathy sounds, she brings a sort of warm melancholy feel to the story. To hear her live in concert is the real treat. In her last summer concert in Norway last year she had been very emotional, just before this song she had been wiping away the tears from her eyes, soon to be reflected in the lyrics. Of course, we in the audience, also had issues with our own joyful tears...

You said, "haunting and beautiful"... nailed it!
okay so you've played this a hundred times and know the song inside and out... just let me say, Angelina's version is the one that I actually heard the story in the song for the first time. Her version for me, is gut wrenching. Elvis' was fun.

My interpretation of the symbolism of this music video: First, and foremost; Angelina Jordan at 16 is the epitome of a Storytelling ARTIST, and she has the ability to take us by the hand and lead us down an imaginary path that we visualize as reality. The remarkable fact is that we experience this in each of her performances. In this video we see her as a married woman in her mid to late 20s. As the video starts out, we see dishes, and it is a symbol of a home. As AJ sings the phrase “Were caught in a trap, I can’t walk out” we see 3 small children, this to me is a marriage where the children come first. If it were AJ by herself, she would not stay in a relation without trust. © Larry D. Pifer

Nice reaction. I don't know if this was recorded live, but it is a produced video, so it may have been prerecorded audio. I do know she plays guitar and would probably follow along with the video anyway. Either way, it is a fantastic rendition of this song. Looking forward to more Angelina on your channel. Peace.

This is clearly a full music video and not a live from studio! There's a pre-recorded track and then the video with different takes, cuts, etc.
The important thing is how amazing this rearrangement is and how Angelina's voice shines in it.

I really enjoy your review of our angel. I have been following Angelina for a very long time. If you really want to get Blown Away start from the real beginning when she was only six years old and her first trip, To a recording studio.
She is singing “I who have nothing “. Another one that’ll really throw you is when she was 10 years old, saying “feeling good“ listen to the very end of this song and see what you think.
She was singing “I have nothing “

The baby and very little girl are Angelina's cousins - the preteen girl is Angelina's sister Juliette and the Piano Player is Rob Christie Director of the Republic Records Los Angeles Studio which is the record label that Angelina has been signed with since she was 14 years old.

Angelina fully embodies each song. It is all about telling the story of the song and conveying the emotions. While I liked Elvis's version of this Mark James song, it was all about the energy Elvis put into it. I didn't fully understand the story of the song until I heard Angelina's version. There are many such classic songs, Angelina has 'covered', that I can say the same. Angelina will be performing at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony on December 11, nine years after she first sang at that event with "What a Wonderful World" when she was 8 years old. She has promised a Christmas EP.

👣Early Christmas this year Andy. Starting at the 11th 🤗 - Well, as long as she don`t send us the EP even earlier, that is. We never quite know with our 🌟- angel, do we. She is masterfull even in delivering surprices. And I even love that side by her too 👣

As with most music videos, there is little doubt in my mind that this was recorded in studio. The glorious tone of the piano couldn't possibly be coming from the piano in the video. While Angelina can play some on the guitar, I suspect the palm muted section was played by Rob Christie. We angels know she is capable of a performance of this quality, anytime, anywhere, but it only makes sense that this was prerecorded.

Angelina really does make songs her own, and she makes you understand the meaning of the lyrics in a way the original singers never tried to do. And while we get Angelina’s very different take on iconic songs, there is always respect for the original song and singer. We have very overt visual nods to Elvis (and Priscilla), but there’s also reminiscences to Elvis’s vocals. I love this video. It hits on all cylinders: visually, musically, vocally, and with the beautiful videography. As with many of her covers, Suspicious Minds is now Angelina’s song for me.

Beautiful reaction, thanks Mike. From the very first words, the warmth, tone, passion and sweetness that Angelina manages to instill in this mythical song are truly incredible, you just wish the song was much longer. Her phrasing, backed by her wonderful use of breath and her peculiar jazz tone, always fascinates me and gives me chills every time, I love this absolutely amazing, so personal rewrite of this iconic song, with so many Elvis tribute details. Now it's a different song, but it's also the same, it still has that harmony, but somehow (in a way only Angelina can process) it's even more emotional, it's slower, but it's so close to your soul flow that kidnaps you. 💛🧡❤

Well done Mike....Angelina seemingly will always put her own take on songs and artists she loves, as is the case here. Beautiful arrangement by the 16 year old and of course the simply mesmerizing vocals she brings to every thing. Thought I saw a little smile at the end when she put in the Elvis "Oh Yeah" at the very end. She always respects the original artist. Happy Holidays. 🥰🥰

Very nice reaction: with regard to the chord variation you mention I wonder if that is just with respect to Elvis's cover - or to the original version of the song (I forgot who that was by but it wasn't Elvis... Mark something or other )

Mark James never really liked what Elvis did to this song. I've listened to Mark's version and of all three, Angelina's just seems to tap into the emotion of this song about a declining relationship. That opening phrase is so powerful and heart felt it never fails to bring tears to my eyes. I've been in dying relationships and it is very sad thing to go through. She nailed it.
