- In celebration of Super Mario Bros. turning 35, Nintendo released a Ninji speedrun dedicated to the occasion. However, the top 35 players in North America by the end of the week will actually receive a physical coin. I have achieved this goal.

For the next ninji you could wait at the goal and touch the flag at the last possible moment. This would give you the lowest rank and you'd know how many people have completed the ninji.
What does this mean?
@@Usith If you have the slowest speedrun your rank will = the number of speedrunners.
When he got the time of 55.9 seconds Panga was around 49k rank, i.e. approximately 49k people had completed the speeedrun faster than him.
With multiple accounts and carefully placed speedruns you can get a lot of data on how many people are running in certain times.
I think it already says how many people completed it though

Agreed. If two people are tied for 3rd place then it shows a 3 for both. In this case all the auto people were tied for the higher place so you don't get to see the lower bound.

One theory about about your position at 22:44. It could be the case that 51793 is tied between many many thousands of players, so what you really should have tried initially is to hold left for a bit. Maybe then you would have gotten a placement around 100k.

100k? based on that graph it should've been around 200k, it was definitely like 3x as many people who just did the auto than who actually tried for faster.
@@codetaku 100k was pretty much just a guess (and 100k is a nice round number of roughly the correct size).
I'm not really sure how to interpret the small black bars in the graph. By counting pixels I would say 200k is about the upper limit of what the true value could be. It all depends on how one should interpret the small black bars.
@@codetaku Just did some more research. At 21:20 you can see that the total number of players that have played the course (regardless of if they've cleared it or not) is 145256. So the true answer is probably around 140k.
@@hej100 If rank 51793 is the people tied in the auto and there were 145256 people competing, isn't it simply 145256 - 51792 = ~93.4k people who just played the auto or did worse?

I have gotten between top 80 and top 300 on all the ninjis, this one I couldn’t break 1000 except for early in the week. I grinded it for HOURS and couldn’t get close I was so upset. I really wanted that coin!! Imagine being one of a few people who got one, that was the driving force behind this one

I spent almost the entire week trying to reach the top 35 players to get that coin. I ended up getting eye strain and a bit of nausea and failed miserably. You may not have reached Number 1 but you have earned my respect for trying this hard and being lucky. You’ve earned that coin.

the problem with your experiment was that with your autoplay, you tied every1 else. you all get to be 51k rank. you had to be 1 frame SLOWER first. and then beat it auto to see the difference.
The reason your thought excitement didn’t work as you had planned, is because Mario Maker 2 leaderboards including Ninji leaderboards settle ties at the highest rank. This means that even though it only looks like you passed 6,000 people, in actuality you likely passed 50,000. Your experiment would’ve worked much better if you had gone a frame slower than the auto, and then a frame faster. Thanks for the great video!

The fact that Panga's incredible og WR run time became not even close to being top 35 within a few days makes me really glad I gave the grind up myself.

@slicer4ever: this might be weird, but what if u remapped jump to a shoulder button?
that's exactly what I always do in emulators, I remap the jump and run to shoulder buttons to be more comfortable

It’s so amazing to watch a really great player grind this godawful, congested mess of a level. Well done!
The real question is:
If the players let the level play even just once without doing anything then the highest time should be the time of the auto-play.
So if the auto level gives you a time of 56.x seconds without doing anything, then how are there lots of people with a time worse than that?

@@lyzder7298 Yes, but the that ranking shows only a player's best ranking. So if they simply let the auto-level play itself just once any ranking above 57 seconds would disappear.
And you would try to let the auto level play at least once to get the default reference time you need to beat.
As such how come some people do not even do that?
That is what I find amusing about those times.
@@xyavdast5554 basically there are people who likes to explore the whole level and then they don't care about playing again.
That 1000 only jump was because you got placed As "Best" player Among the auto ones, so the huge gap is AFTER the autó part if you go slighty slowrr

You want to be one frame SLOWER than auto-time. If you have 10 people tied in 2nd, let's say, next best time would be 12th place (big jump), and only one person would be in 1st (small jump)

i only had a short time with this ninji because i forgot to do it until the last 20 mins but looking at this makes me realize how awful i am at this game because theres no way i could do some do half of this at my current skill level :c

Nice work on all of these. Really amazing to see SRs attention to detail & grinding. I don't understand how anyone has that kind of muscle memory (and I used to compete as a saber fencer).
The problem is, there are a shit ton of people tied at the same time/rank. So basically, imagine if you had 1 person each at a time of 1-99, but 50 people tied at 100. Slightly beating the time of one hundred(say, getting a 99) will only move you up one spot. The only way your idea would work is if those 50 people with times of 100 were all ranked 150, instead of 100(if you follow me.)
Also, congrats on the great time. I can't even imagine grinding a level that much. And even if I did, I couldn't get anywhere close to your time.

I think if lots of people tie then it gives you the lowest number position. so if there are 10 people tied for 10th place all 10 of them get 10th place.
That would explain why improving your time by one second didn't help. You were already given the lowest place for everybody who tied.
If you tried adding one frame to the auto time you might see the number jump way up.
My guess is if you held left, your place would have that huge difference you were looking for. My guess is the auto place was determined by 1 rank worse than the next best time and the next worst time WAS that huge difference.
I think if you finished a tick slower than the auto time, you would see how many people's best time was the auto-time.
When talking about where to save frames, I think landing at the very beginning of the red conveyor belt would save a bunch.

Im watching this video and im just failing to understand how this level takes longer then the any% speedrun of mr krabs overdoses on ketamine.
tbh I‘d really enjoy if you came back near the end for all the ninji speedruns, just to see how the strats evolved since the first day. Might be too much of a time sink though

I feel like next time you try to see how congested the "auto" time is (if there's ever another ninji that's auto), the best strat would be to beat the time by a hair, and then lose the time by a hair, and take the difference.
Thanks to this video, I don't feel so bad about giving up on this trick now and just keeping it at a 20.968 time. The first light tap jump is fine for me, but the one on the right of the fire flower (and then immediately jumping again) was just too much

i think you would see a bigger difference in the ranking if you would be at first slower than the auto section.

For your experiment, you should have done 1 second slower, then the auto, then 1 second faster
