    This is why I love Aloy so much. So often in games, shows, etc, characters hold their tongue while I’m shouting at the TV, begging them to say what we all want them to say. What everyone needs to hear them say. I cheered when Aloy called them all out. It was so powerful.

    I love that Teersa, out of the three leaders, doesn't use any prefects nor does she immediately bow down to Aloy. She talks with her directly and seems to be aware that, for as monumental as what's going on in front of her is, Aloy is still young and overwhelmed by everything. She also understands the hypocrisy of the tribe in their actions here, but knows that now isn't the time for some sort of reformation. They need to use Aloy's newfound power in the tribe to get everyone on board and focused for the upcoming fight.

      There's so many layers to this scene. Her translating what's happened into a religion that she doesn't believe in yet isn't completely detached from reality and she's suddenly a central figure. Her wrestling with the weight of what she learnt and it sinking in what she has to do - remember, she was focused in the previous scene on the implications on her parentage and you somewhat get the impression that the implications of GAIA's mission didn't sink in until here - followed by accepting the burden placed upon her. Her being both accepted by the tribe and yet immediately distanced by their worship and her utter rejection of this. Her declaration of how she wasn't doing it for the Nora but for everyone. In three minutes, she goes through all of these emotions, all of these thoughts, and you see it played out in brilliant animation and vocal works. Throw in how the crowd evolves, throw in the payoff of blue-orange contrast, throw in the way the music evolves (listen for the cello as she declares there's more than just the Nora followed by how the music adjusts again when Teersa once again leads), it's an incredibly complex and beautiful scene.

    This is where I totally feel in love with the game and her character. The village kept shunning her, and she doesn't owe them anything, but only has a purpose of her own to help them.
    Neither she became the person to burn the village to feel it's warmth, but just told them she'll never truely be one of theirs as she knows the treatment they gave her. She just remained focused on her purpose and never used herself and her stature as a way to control people.

  • @zackcook5123
    @zackcook5123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +106

    This is why I really enjoy Aloy. She should be the textbook example for strong female characters. She avoids being a Mary Sue brilliantly.
    Aloy was an outcast from birth and she actually calls people out on mistreating her and doesn't roll over.
    They only change tune because she's the "chosen one" and she hates it.
    When she got lost in the ruins she showed intuition. A thing that saved people. Avoiding the machines as a kid was due to a tool not because "she was just that good".
    But when she saw means to improve herself she wasn't heaped with gifts. She earned everything with hard work. Even parts of her equipment she made.
    A less thought out character would have been widely beloved immediately.
    Or would have been given the focus because she was "chosen" as a child.
    Everything earned she struggles, tries and succeeds.

      Imo this is probably the one time aloy shows raw emotion. Other than this part she’s pretty much your typical main character. But u are right this is how they should do female characters

    • @yiklongtay6029
      @yiklongtay6029 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think she is a mary sue by the common definition that she can do everything. Compassionate, combative, prodigious with her skills, and everybody besides the Nora lover her. And that is OK. A lot of stories pull off the hyper competent protagonist easily. I think the more accurate and useful definition of mary sue is one that unrealistically warp everyone's characterization around her.
      So like Rei was probably not a mary sue UNTIL she met Han Solo who had to regress into a smuggler and contradict his character growth into a war hero in order to become her supporting cast

    • @yiklongtay6029
      @yiklongtay6029 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Nightlizard1564 Mary sue is less concerned about origins and justifications of powers. Most discourse focus on how they do not have any current flaws or shortcomings. Even if you throw as many training montages towards young Rei before the events of E7, people will still regard her function in the plot as a mary sue

    • @Whimsy3692
      @Whimsy3692 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Nightlizard1564 Yeah, but it's a montage. Would you be interested in knowing more about how long it took (about 6 years) for Aloy to get to that mature point as a learning experience, or would you just want to skedaddle right to the gameplay?
      If you chose the latter, it means you don't really care for Aloy's character, and just want to go on a adventure with an independent woman.
      And the game knows this. That's why it sells.
      If you ever found yourself saying in video games, "come onnnn, I get it. She's strong. Let's just get to the game," it means you don't care for a character deeper than that. You _have to_ admit that.
      Mary Sues don't cry. They don't do that. Ew. And they can never be wrong. They automatically know everything.
      The game immediately jumps right into Aloy being able to do "anything and everything" because catering to "strong and independent" women, is what's truly important for the game's -earnings- uh, success.

    This was my favorite moment of the game and a watershed moment for Aloy. Her whole life these people have treated her like garbage just because of the insignificant fact she had no mother. Now they treat her like a god now that they know what she really is but she doesn’t want their respect and she doesn’t save them because it was her reason for being born, she saves them because it’s the right thing to do.
