Geodesic dream - 01_Rough

  • This is a brief overview of building a geodesic home house that I plan to live in.
    The shell comes as a "kit" that a third company ‪@NaturalSpacesDomes78‬ made, all we needed to do is assemble it. That part was the easiest.
    What we didn't know is that pretty much everything else was harder: Foundation was a huge blow in the budget (being made up of so many segments), carpentry was also a challenge. Most carpenters are just plainly used to building squares, so you really need to find someone creative, who sees his job as an art and would dedicate to do it properly and in good taste.
    Also you need to have a separate architect. Although NSD (‪@NaturalSpacesDomes78‬ ) gives you some partial plans to use for permitting, you also need to add the electrical, mechanical and engineering, general and trade-specific notes, and everything else you might want to add. The pre-made plans don't come with any elevations, any materials schedules, any cross-section views (although I actually chose that as an option, but allegedly they lost their CAD person) etc. You need an architect to complete the plans and guide you through the process. You will likely want to make changes (asking NSD for any changes will take much longer), so an architect will make that possible.
    Also the windows are a pain to deal with. I opted to do mostly square windows and build the openings , vs going with a lot of skylights (which are very expensive). I only went with a few skylights on upper parts of the domes.
    All of these cost more by quite a bit and it is my opinion that these trades higher costs (foundation, carpentry, flooring, walls and ceiling interiors, roofing etc - both in materials and labor) offset the lower cost of the shell itself. While one part of the system is cheaper, four other parts of the same system are more expensive. The dome house will therefore be more expensive than a conventional built house. Proven fact.
    BUT, it does leave you with a stunning two-floor high living area, and a majestic interior and exterior geometry, that will likely leave you breathless . This type of construction is also very energy-efficient and insanely strong, both in windy and snow-loads situations. The hail damage is like any other house, and is mostly a function of the shingles, not the house.
    In short, I believe there's a sort of magic around this type of house, and for me it was worth trying it out. But it is painful, and you will need to learn a lot, if you want to have a level of control over the way it will end up look like.
    I bought the land in 2020 and worked on this project ever since.
    Planning and permiting took almost a year, and the construction up to this point another one. Hopefully another year to finish.
    Good luck with your dome project (if you're involved in one) and if you need any advice, just ask and I would be happy to give it. But take it on your own risk; even though I work in the trades, I am kind of a newbie when it comes to being your own GC.
    Thank you.

    I built my own dome using the Timberline hub kit. Layed 7" polystyrene slabs on top, had deep V grooves between the panels. Put rebar in the grooves, then covered the entire dome with 1x1 by 14 gauge galvinized wire fence. Hand mixed and hand applied a special low-water concrete mix with fibers in it 2-3" thick. When done, took down the Timberline kit and put it away. I believe you could drive a Mac truck over it and could not tell anything was happening! Super energy efficient. Coated the thing with Elastomeric paint. Oh, I also embedded 5/8" threaded rods at strategic places to hold the ledger boards for the upstairs floor. It is a 40 foot 3/8 sphere on a 4 foot base wall.
    Great job on your dome!

      Thank you so much! I am trying my best, this is much harder than I thought it would be. MUCH HARDER. Though it does look glamorous when filmed, I must admit :)
      Roof will be Reinke Shakes: roman gold for the two domes, slate grey for the riser walls and the verticall walls (connection beteen domes)
      All exterior trims will be black (gutters, windows, doors, deck railings). I hope it will look at least decent, since I have no designer in this...

      Thank you! I wanted to do an airbnb originally (was living downtown chicago at the time), and the initial idea was just a smaller dome, not two large ones, but after a while I realized that I want to live there. So I sold my condo and started to build this better version of my initial idea, long story short. But you are right, it gets pricey, quickly.
      best way to sort of price it is to go to the manufacturer's page. It just depends on too many variables, like the inside materials and finishes, insulation, roofing choices, earth work needed, type of heating (I did geothermal) labor prices in the area, and a lot, lot more. For example, I didn't hire any GC, and that alone can save you 50-80k on the project. I am hunting on FB marketplace for any deals I can find (interior wood covering, flooring, appliances etc).

    great video, and very useful comments...how many livable square feet/metres are in the structure(s)?
    I've spent a bit of time in a couple of domes, even built and camped in one over 3+ months, in 6 locations [1/2" tubing, about 12 feet across, 3-frequency 3/8], which worked out great, except that we needed to fix the skin a couple of times. but, the interior feels do different from a 'tent', it's amazing.

      Thank you! The main dome is 49' diameter, 1600sqft on the main floor, and 900 sqft on the second floor (that only covers around 5/8 of the dome, the rest is open to above. Then the garage dome is around 1000sqft on the main floor and around 900 on the second floor. The garage dome is a 36' diameter dome. And the connection piece between them is around 200sqft per level. It has the stairs there as well. Thanks again!

    Geodesic structure are very cool, architecturally, however, I have to seriously question the efficiency of the construction process, the use of internal space, and the difficulties of standard practices (such as drywall, finish carpentry, etc.). Nature does not have right angles, and thus we prefer to live in a home not having right angles. However, all of our construction products are made for right angles and 16 inch on center construction (which is a shame, but economically practical). Beautiful job BTW.

    • @peteram7
      @peteram7  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! You're absolutely right, everything is a pain to put together, when it comes to the shell. I still have to do all the interior paneling and outside roofing, after framing all the windows. Hard, but I do think that will be a very efficient structure (load bearing and such). And the appeal of the unique geometry, of course. Thx again!

  • @davepennington3573

    Beautiful domes, but wooden domes have historically done poorly. IF you can keep water out they will last, but that's a big if. The only geodesic domes I have seen last a long time have been covered in fiberglass, which raises the price even further. Cost per square foot is far higher than a conventional home and that is before the cost of repairs when/if water gets past your membrane. Repairing these complex structures is very expensive.

    • @joshpit2003
      @joshpit2003 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I share your concerns. I think they've done poorly (historically) because they were built by hippies. This guy wrapped the whole structure in adhesive-backed, Water and Ice Shield. It should hold up for the life of the roof so long as the origami (overlaps) were done correctly (including around windows). Hopefully the roofing is done just as well, as there is little room for error with a geodesic domes roof.

    • @peteram7
      @peteram7  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dave, I agree with you and Josh. Historically they have been done poorly because of DIY-ers (read hippies, haha). I feel what I am doing is legit construction that should last a long time. I have couple GCs that I constantly take advice from - and my architect. The roofing will be AL shingles from Reinke. Their motto: Roofing for the last time! I was trying to be super-paranoid when it comes to water issues. Yes, windows will also be tricky and I intend to be super careful and do it by the book. Thank you for the good points!

It just depends on too many variables, like the inside materials and finishes, insulation, roofing choices, earth work needed, labor prices in the area, and a lot, lot more. For example, I didn't hire any GC, and that alone can save you 50-80k on the project

    How is this superior to a standard stick frame? It is not. Tons of joints mean tons of leak opportunities. It's one big complex roof which make roofing more expensive and difficult.

      fair points, thank you! Yes, pricing is almost impossible: what finishes are you doing? is one of the main ones. Price of labor in the area, choices of roofing, insulation, HVAC, plumbing, lighting etc etc etc...all can be an order of magnitude apart.
      I mentioned in the comments a link where the ppl can go on for more info. It's the company I bought the domes shells from.
      Other than that, my mission is pretty much done :) Again, I'm just a guy who uploaded this more for friends and family, people that I meet in person and explain the details that way. It's just a hobby of mine, and it's not meant to be informative (in retrospect, I should have disclosed that). But I never thought it would generate that much interest outside my circle of people...hope my thought process makes sense.
