    Incredible video Alex! It was a great snapshot of a life as a Analyst! I have 2 questions:
    I have a BS in Finance, 14yrs of Banking experience, 16yrs of Restaurant Mgmt. and because of Covid I was let go and I have decided to pursue the IT Path. After applying for a random good online IT school back in April 2020, I am set to finish school end of Jan 2021. However i am seeing that all these certifications I am retrieving are basically just pushing me into the Tech/help desk areas. I want to do Data Analyst as of last month. I found a online school that will BOOT CAMP me for 4 months with them (part of their payment structure ) will find me a job but take a % from my 1st month salary.
    1) How do you feel about IT Boot Camp Schools in general and with those strategies ?
    2) Do I just hustle myself with learning the SQL, Python, etc all the basics, scrub the resume and hit the normal traffic of job hunting?
    I appreciate any feedback. Thanks

      1. I have a whole video on bootcamps if you want to check it out, but for the most part I think they're way too expensive for what you're getting.

      Hey Savannah, I spend probably 4-5 hours at my desk per day (when we are at the office/when we go back to the office). The other time is spent in meetings, at coworkers desks, getting lunch downstairs, etc. I would say that I talk with my coworkers every day and we chat about some work and some non-work things. It's usually pretty chill. Some days/weeks it can be the same work, but with the team I'm on we often get requests that are fairly out of the ordinary and get to use some new software or try new things in Python or Azure - which I love. So it seemed (at least to me) that you actually spent a lot of time in meetings as opposed to time actually compiling and reporting data. Is that typical? I am looking into going to school for cloud computing, while I simultaneously hit a data analysis course at a local uni. I have only manual labor experience, so I am hoping this gets me out of the rain and into an office seat. I'd honestly be happy with an entry level job making 40-45k. good to see there is no 8 hours of coding :x Im done with become data analyst and getting soon a job. But im still scared what is expected from a junior analyst. I love meetings (: how long would you say from 8 hours do you really spend in coding like: prepare data, eda, sda, visualisation etc ?

    • @everydaydatanalyst
      @everydaydatanalyst ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi @Game_Lab_Germany. I am also a data analyst, have been for about 6 years now. To answer your question:
      1. From the 8 hour work day, you would usually spend about around 1 to 1.5 hrs of actualy coding, but this honestly can be more or less depending on the day, your tasks and focus for that week or sprint. Since, most analyst will work on some kind of sprint methodology, if your current tasks require the building of scrips, pipeline, etc, some days will be heavier on code and some less.
      2. You do tend to spend more time on visualizations, but the main problem is depends on what company you work for. If you have a central data engineering team, you wont need to clean your data as much, but if you work for a smaller company, then you are most likely part of a one or two or three man show, which means you will need to wear more hats than just simply being an analyst.
      Overall, the majority of time is spent on dealing and understanding stakeholder requests, cleaning your data, and getting said data ready to be used in some kind of report, dash or viz.
      Hope this helped!

How much sql knowledge is expected from me or how advance of a query is expected for me to be able to execute in a data analyst position or what would an employer expect from me as a junior/entry level hire in the sql aspect of it. I know different positions ask for different responsibilities but is there a minimum threshold of knowledge that an entry level should know across all data analyst jobs? My background is from a coding bootcamp where I learned python and sql for data science and I'm trying to land a first position as a Data Analyst since I found that it is usually the most efficient path to get experience in data analytics for data science without work experience in it.

    • @AlexTheAnalyst
      @AlexTheAnalyst 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lynwood Productions I think you’re right. It is hard to determine how much you need or how advanced you need to be. I think overall if you’re really good at the basics (select, from, where, group by, order by) and have some knowledge of intermediate sql (joins, Unions, case statements, etc.) you should be good enough to get an Entry Level job. It sounds like you already have knowledge in these areas with your bootcamp, but I do have a course right now going through the basics and intermediate concepts of SQL if you’re interested in seeing what I deem “intermediate”. Hope that helps!

    • @AlexTheAnalyst

      Hey Anurag, sounds like you already have the core skills down which is great. I don't know if there are any other programs that you "should" learn since the core skills you mentioned can be enough in a lot of cases. Some other options may be learning R, Power BI (just another visualization tool that some companies may use instead of Tabeau), SPSS, and Cloud Platforms (Google, Azure, and AWS are the top ones to learn). For math concepts I would look into regression analysis if you don't already know about that. There are several different types and are used often.

    • @AlexTheAnalyst
      @AlexTheAnalyst 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Really good question. From my experience, online certificates don't have much weight in getting a job. They can be helpful, but doesn't pull half as much weight as a bachelors or masters degree. With that being said I had a bachelors in something completely random, but was still able to land a job focusing really hard on the core skills. I think even if you have no certifications or degrees you can still become a data analyst. It will just be more difficult especially when starting out. I hope that helps!

For the most part, you'll need some type of college degree to get into America to work, unless you're coming here for school or family. If you are looking to work you may start off working remote and gain credibility and experience working for a US company. That may be helpful when trying to get a job in North America. I think business can lead to becoming a data analyst, but depends on the classes that you take. There are definitely business classes that lean towards analytics.
      With that being said you can always get a business degree while learning the necessary data analyst skills and have a great combination of degree and skillset. I'm not a data scientist, but I work with many. The majority of data scientists I work with have STEM backgrounds, one has a financial background. So it is possible, but I think it would be harder to attain. Never impossible though.

I lap am about to release a series on DA Interviews starting next Thursday that I think will be helpful. Another big thing you can do is to make sure you have the necessary marketable skills. I would make sure you know the basics of SQL very well. I have a tutorial if you’re interested. If you can learn some more advanced things than the basics that would be even better. I would also learn some Python (my personal preference, there are other options) and start with learning DataFrames in Pandas and some Data visualization. I think those are the really big things to start with!

      @AlexTheAnalyst 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think you absolutely need one, but it does make it a lot harder without one. A lot of jobs require that as a minimum and a lot of Job sites will filter you out without one on your resume. If you are able to gain experience (internship, volunteering, entry level position), that would be one of the biggest things you can do if you don't have a degree.
