You're not alone. Many of us have been there. I look at it as I've spent the last 3 years catching up with all the 4k titles I've missed out on since 2016. At this point, it's not a big deal if I take a month break. A hobby is only rewarding when it creates personal satisfaction without stress. Take a break and appreciate your awesome collection. Resume collecting when financially prepared. Very little released this month is going OOP tomorrow.

The biggest thing I’ve learned in over 25 years of buying movies is patience is key it’s a collection not a race. If we all had unlimited budgets we’d buy everything and enjoy nothing. Keeping up with the joneses is a struggle too many cool things to stay focused on your own personal wants and collection needs. Since January I’ve limited my self to 1-2 studio releases a month and focusing on getting the the cooler versions saving up for the big ticket items.
And all that went out the window the other day😂 damn you Fifth Element!

That’s great advice for any hobby and collection. I’m much more into saving and investing my money so I have it for emergencies. Just before the pandemic I got into a pretty good place and when I’d go out I’d buy roughly 1 film a week on average. I could get 100 purchases a year then decided to scale back and slow down simply because I didn’t want to have no space.

I’m a filmmaker and long time physical media collector. You have to look at the hobby as a long term investment in ensuring you have access to your favourite movies. It’s a wonderful time to collect physical media and I love everyone who buys and collects actual physical media. It’s because of us the format has lasted this long and we have to ensure it lasts as long as possible. The dystopian future where movies may only exist on streaming services haunts me and I don’t want to live in that world.
Keep collecting movies, as you can. Make sure your hobby brings you joy and satisfaction. Don’t worry about what others are buying that you don’t have. Be glad they are buying those discs and keeping the format viable. Get them when you can. Most of all, make sure the movies you love will never be taken from you by having it on your shelf to enjoy. I applaud your decision to collect physical media.

I love the honesty, so many people online don’t talk about this aspect of collecting. I’m currently in a situation where my collecting is at a halt and it’s so nice to be going through and watching/rewatching what I own, it made me remember that I have a collection because of my love for film not just for purchasing films. Sometimes I find myself forgetting that.

I now only buy what I genuinely like and know that most "Limited Edition " titles are usually released again within a Year.
I sold My DVD Collection to upgrade for Blu Ray amd did the same with My Blu Ray Collection for 4K which it's more expensive to keep up with and now I just use VUDU and Tubi and only buy a 4K if it's a steelbook I want of a Movie I know I'll watch yearly.

  • @mothmanmedia8511
    @mothmanmedia8511 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I’ve collected so many things and what I really had to learn after being in that same situation is that sometimes collecting can be a disease. And you realize you have a lot of things that you’ve collected because that’s rare and expensive, but I wouldn’t watch it or play it or truly appreciate it. So I did the unthinkable and paired down my collections dramatically and try to focus on things that made my collection feel more personal to me. So for myself I am Horror Head through and through so I got rid of most of my other movies and only make exceptions to buy things that aren’t horror if they get a boutique release such as a criterion or an arrow or a steelbook. If it doesn’t than I can live with watching it digitally. I know it sounds like sacrilege for a physical collector, but it truly is freeing when you can not only limit the amount of things taking up your space, but also make the ones that are taking up your space extremely special versions or editions that make your collection stand out even more.

You expressed exactly how i feel. I've been collecting movie media since the early 1980s starting with VHS and got caught up with upgrading to DVD to Blu Ray (to include the director's cuts) and now the siren call of 4K. Instead of expanding my collection, i was quad-dipping what I already had. Finally, I realized that I was spinning my wheels, and denying myself of different movies. And, my Social Security check can only go so far. So, now I stop, think, sleep on it and limit myself to "$X" a month. Sale next month? Don't buy anything until then. I’ve also developed an interest in the custom action figures that are based on a lot of these movies, so believe me, the struggle for self discipline is real when it comes to finances.

Been there. It's a balance, the hunt is great fun and that purchase dopamine hit is sweet but its too easy to just buy releases for the sake of it and end up over buying. A few rules can be really powerful and make collecting more focused. In the past I've bought way too many records, books and films by not having some sensible guidelines.
These days I purchase blurays only to fill a great title I never upgraded from DVD, or its a favourite being upgraded to 4K, or I'm just adding something new I really enjoyed streamed or at cinema. I've stopped the random and blind buys, and now the spending is much more manageable. Anything that gets replaced or is not enjoyed gets sold on.
To me a collection isn't a static ever growing library anymore, it shifts and mutates as I replace and remove things i don't connect to personally.

Always wait for sales unless it’s a move you absolutely know you love to death, and/or it’s going to be hard to get if you don’t get it now. I’ve come to terms with only buying films I KNOW I will rewatch more than a few times. Most movies, like 95% of them, are not worth a second watch, so I tell myself they aren’t worth it to own, we only have a limited time on this planet, we can’t take these movies with us when we go. Relax, breathe, be happy for others when they get things they want, and they should be happy when you get things you want, it should be a fun experience, not a stressful race to the finish.

Hi. Thank you for being honest. Not many people would have admitted what you just did. It's a real problem, and I've been there myself more than once. I live in South Africa and don't have access to all the stuff you do. The last 4K movies I got, I ordered from Amazon. I pre-ordered True Lies and Aliens, but had to cancel The Abyss. It was fairly expensive with shipping included. Until a month before that, I didn't even own a 4K display. I literally bought a high-end 4K gaming monitor to watch True Lies, one of my favorite movies of all time. I'm a huge James Cameron fan, so I had to go big or go home. Well, I still don't have The Abyss, but I've had to scale down even more than usual. I've been collecting 4K Blu-Ray discs since about 2018, but I watched the included Blu-Ray discs on my own 1080p display or watched the 4K Blu-Ray discs on my brother's 4K TV.

What pisses me off is that some of the youtubers get stuff for free and pretend like they bought them. Makes us all think it's possible. It's not. Slow down, make a plan, stick to it, be good. You will enjoy collecting more, when you can buy less. When you have to choose. I bought The Cranes Are Flying this month. Really looking forward to it coming home. Watch more of the videos of people talking about this addiction, not people getting free film and try to make you buy more. If one film a month is too little, do three, maybe five. Budget. I'm glad you said this because the 'haul' mentality never ever mentions the financial cost of buying in bulk, pretty much everything that comes out. Collecting as opposed to film appreciation is the key, it leads to completism and assembling a 'collection' regardless of the financial costs or necessity for every purchase. A good disc with extras, commentaries and a booklet can last several evenings and yet the tendency is to watch the feature and skip to the next disc. Most of us have some streaming too and so physical discs probably don't get played every day, and thus a small collection can suffice for most. You know it's gone too far when you're blind buying stuff you don't really care about and then leaving it on the shelf for years without watching it.

Kino is another I held out on too because again those will be there sale after sale after sale. I've come to learn that certain labels like those, and then also the standard movies that fill the shelves at WalMart every Tuesday are ones that will be there to purchase at a cheaper cost down the road so I don't need them right now. Vinegar Syndrome is kinda hard because I love the slips and some of those sell out in literally an hour or 2 sometimes each month so I kinda gotta get those immediately if I don't wanna miss out so that's what I try to focus on first. Buddy, we’ve all been there. At one point there were several sales going on simultaneously and I figured I could get 2-3 items from each sale. Big no no for me. Luckily it didnt overdraft. I got paid before a lot of the bills came out. That’s the good thing about sales. Usually they are towards the end of the month, Kino usually does that or at least theirs is a month long. I usually wait until the last two days of a sale so that I’m pushing my funds further that way. I also try waiting until the day after I get paid so I definitely know what I have to spend. Good video here. Good lucky on the no buy July. Train your mind on not jumping into every sale. I’ve had to train my mind and now I’m so behind on what I want, however I buy in moderation and I don’t just buy whatever, I buy what needs to be in my personal collection. Take care🙏🏼

You COULD be addicted to gambling, alcohol or drugs.. with the latter two making you broke AND having negative effects on your physical health, which means you'd most likely not be able to engage properly with a community like us on youtube, possibly damage close relationships with friends, fam etc
You've identified the issue though. Make it thru one day, then two.. then a week.. etc etc. Give yourself some major credit for making it thru each day. Use that free time up to watch movies you haven't watched yet.

in my area, since we got no physical media distribution anymore, missing out can really be a serious issue: import is too expensive, and nearly all "importer" here are individual online sellers so they got only 1 or 2 copies of each movie. if you want an item, you can add it to your wishlist but people can see how many others adding the same item to their wishlist. you need to buy it first before its out of stock. i thought this is less of an issue in the US or other countries that still got physical media distribution, but turns out it can affect anyone albeit probably with different triggers...

To be fair if these sales are as ongoing as they are I tune them out. I have to. I’ve learned I’m in it first the long haul not a sprint. It’s a marathon. It’s the one hobby that’s truly fun. I got waylaid and side tracked by toys. Yes I scratched that action figure (I’ll call them dolls) itch. It feels selfish. I got a few 4K titles recently, The Thing (1982), RoboCop (1987) and Frankenstein by Kenneth Branagh. Which I love all 3. My holy grail is to get Star Trek TMP 4K box set and the box set of the original crew 4K films. I’ll get them from next year over the year. I’ve planned for that and unless the economy really kick starts (in the UK it’s really rough) and I’m glad and yes I may pay over the odds a bit, unless they’re like 3x the RRP (MSRP) then I’d go like, “Yeah, I love it, I want it, but stuff paying that.” I think that mindset is pretty commonplace now.
In all honesty I have not got any physical media releases this year. I have some Doctor Who on order and some 4K titles - just the blockbuster trash like Renfield, M3gan and a few others. Last year from October I only got Oppenheimer which I loved as I’d gotten by then all Nolan’s films on 4K. Having these resets is good and I really really applaud your courage for talking about this.

Now I'm happy to have sales because usually things are priced too high at release.
But once a wise person said that poor people shop sales and rich people buy quality stuff they need when they need it.
Now that sounds bad. But what I took from this is its probably better to buy a nice 25.00 4K limited edition Blu-ray then spend $100 a month on 10 Blu-rays at 10 dollars or 20 $5 DVDs. So unless I find a hidden gem on tubi, My goal is to buy one or maybe two quality releases per month. Limit myself to 25 to 40 or maybe $50 tops a month.
And then I can maybe have one month out of the Year where I spend $100 to $200. Like a Christmas shopping spree.
But I can't spend that type of money every month. Because really the idea of a collection is to have the movies there to watch so buying is not necessary for my enjoyment of the actual movie watching experience.

Since I've started with bluray, I'm mainly just getting TV Series that I like and some movies sometimes, so that I can re-watch the TV Series I like over and over to fill the gap when not buying bluray movies. Thankfully I enjoy The Office a lot so re-watching it over and over is no problem for me. Appears to be a good method to hinder my urge to acquire more physical media since I'm already enjoying what I currently have. Gotta leave another comment, watching further, that you shouldn't ever go into debt because of this hobby. Especially when most of us have unwatched stacks enough for a few years (I know I do) 😂.
I also never feel FoMo, except for those MantaLab and HDZeta ULEs, that sell out in literal 90 seconds.
Plus my taste in movies is kinda 'trashy' relative to 'mainstream', so most titles are usually available for a while, and I never cared about o-ring slipcases.
Also all those TH-camrs with huge stacks of new releases - they receive it all for free, so you can't handle that buying all with your own money of course...

thankfully my unwatched stack is very small 😂im not MLM lol I only have maybe 20-25 unwatched in my pile. But yea this hobby should never cause you to EVER go broke & I just had 1 month where I forgot that. Im not even buying "new releases" for TH-cam, my channel isn't about highlighting everything "new". I may do it here & there if im excited about a movie & I don't see many TH-camrs talking about it but most of my purchases are harder to find or uniquely package films.

I definitely went overboard in June & wasn't even paying attention until it was too late.

I have never gotten myself into a financial hole from purchasing physical media, and I'm buying it all the time.

And TH-cam don’t pay you nothing go on go on you
It’s the devil in your money
It’s sounds like your talking yourself out of buying anything
The thing you have to do is just do it and do what you have to do for your self so you don’t lose anything
And don’t talk yourself out of it
You have to do what’s best for you and your life or you might endure up on the streets
This is what I do write down h how much you have for movies and not go over thhat limit
