    Drove from eastern Washington over pass into seattle one year for Thanksgiving. Arrived at 5pm and it was like driving into a deserted city. didn't pass 100 cars from snoqaulmie pass to the hotel in the university district. there was about 4 " of snow in seattle, I was driving an 85 ford tempo with no snow tires. poor girl at the desk had been there for 36 hours because her relief couldn't make it in.

    What people don't understand about Seattle. It's typically not freezing cold here consistently like other parts of the country. It usually snows, starts to melt OR rains....then freezes overnight and turns to sheets of ice. Repeat process and streets are like an ice skating rink WITH HILLS.

    • @nemo78
      @nemo78 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Erin-Thor I disagree. As long as you're not locking up your tires you'll be able to control your car at least in some way. When it's that slippery, and the hill is steep, you probably won't be able to stop it, but just keep tapping your brakes gently without locking up and you'll be at least able to steer your car. It's always better to have a little control to where you're going instead of just sliding down uncontrollably.

      Jim Nguyen It's very, very rare for us to get more than a short little flurry very late in the season (I remember one happening in May). It doesn't usually stay cold enough for long enough, and when it does stay cold for a while it's usually too dry. Unfortunately those mild temperatures are part of why it's so difficult to drive in it. The temperature hovers around freezing and creates this snow-melt-freeze-snow cycle. The result is a disgusting mass of compacted snow and ice that has roughly the same texture and consistency as wet cement.

    From East Washington here, was taught to drive in the snow. East WA tends to laugh at West WA for having difficulty driving in snow. But then I married a West WA resident and moved over there. Oh it's no joke. I have driven in the deepest, slickest Spokane snow without a problem. The first snowfall in Mukilteo, I slid. I did everything right, I did everything I was taught, and still slid, and smacked into a curb. And another car slid and went right toward me, and the front of his car hit the front of mine. I never laughed at West WA snow again. This was 2011. I'm commenting in 2023 and I see this is 11 years ago so this must have been that same snowfall.

And as long as you're not locking or spinning your tires, you'll have at least some traction.

    To preface this I have driven in the snow in other states including Wyoming and North Dakota. Seattle is far more difficult to drive in. There is almost always ice on or barely under the snow. It usually will warm up just enough to make the snow soft and then freeze it. Plus, Seattle isn't equipped like other cities where snow is common. Come here without snow tires and chains and try to drive on any of our hills and Seattle will make you look foolish.

    Seattle rarely gets snow therefore: drivers are naturally unfamiliar with conditions, vehicles are not equipped to deal with it and the city can't clear it from all the streets that very same day. It will melt soon.
    I just moved from Wisconsin to Fairbanks, Alaska and drive a semi on the Alaska Highway, including portions of that road in the Yukon Territory, Canada. I also make trips to Valdez, AK. The roads have been snow covered and icy the majority of the days since the end of October!

  • @USSAKiwi
    @USSAKiwi 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Seattle "snow" is different: it is snow on ICE. Don't judge if you have not driven in Seattle during an ice storm: ICE + HILLS = NO CONTROL. I have driven in snow all over the world: Seattle roads are the worst during a snow and ice storm. I think it has something to do with the fact that the snow in Seattle is of a wet quality, then melts during the day and then freezes again overnight. Then just before the morning commute you get some snow to make you believe it is "only" snow on the road.

    @forkliftninjaz People typically don't buy snow tires in Seattle because it rarely snows here. That's also why the city has very little snow removal equipment. We'll get this kind of snow maybe once every 2-3 years. Not to mention we also have VERY steep hills. I don't think the best of snow tires would help much on some of our steepest, unplowed, unsalted hills.

  • @barryc261

    @CeceCabading We get the same 'wet' snow here in mid to eastern NC. We have on average 2-3 winter storms consisting of any or all of the following: freezing rain, sleet, snow (usually the wet variety), and black ice. Most people get in wrecks because either they go out when they should have stayed at home, drove down a road that was too dangerous, or they were driving too fast/braking too hard.

    I dunno what'd be scarier; driving in Seattle in snow or in Duluth.

    the guy in the bronco was not too smart......locking the brakes is a surefire way to continue sliding out of control.

    Im from upstate (way upstate..with a lot more hills and mountains) NY and I lived in Seattle for about 5 years. its not the snow or the ice, its the tires. from what I have seen and experienced, people do not get the right tires on their cars. they buy mostly tires for rain, not all seasons. an all season radial would solve the problem.... that and better preparation by the city....

    two words; Studded tyres. here in sweden (northern) we often get snowy conditions like yours during the beginning and end of winter. i've been driving in it for a looong time. hills or no hills, if you use your brain and REMEMBER that it is slippery as fukk under that fresh snow, you won't start sliding. that is unless you do like everybody in my age around here. you start going sideways, for fun.

    @issamisha only 30 plows because we don't get that much snow here compared to Ohio. We cant blow our city's budget on plows for a few days of heavy snow. Best bet is to stay home. Also, we get black ice and I don't think plows can do much about those.

    Lol! Even the guy with snowchains has trouble! Like the person sledding down the hill and the person skiing. Feel sorry for the people in the cars, I imagine they didn't have as much fun as the guy on the toboggan!

    i understand that wet snow on top of ice sucks to drive in. then add hills to make it worse. but thes people are not event trying to gain control after sliding. they jusk lock up the brakes and hope it stops somewhere.

    If you gots FOUR wheel DRIVE, the laws of physics do NOT apply to you! And remember - when you begin to slide, hold your foot on the brake pedal and keep the steering cranked all the way to one side. That way, you eliminate any possibility of control when you have the chance.

  • @sarahandthings
    @sarahandthings 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @daniel343ful city only has 30 plows. we don't get a lot of snow so budget is restricted. plus, with hills and packed snow, it's impossible to "stop" your car. the people climbing the slope think that just bec they have 4wd, they can.

    @nanarobin1 COMMON SENSE should OBVIOUSLY dictate here! Yes Seattle has Hills, Hills, and more HILLS and snow every other year as you put it. If that is the case, when it snows in Seattle or anywhere else in this state, why in the hell are you getting behind the wheel of a vehicle you already know you can't control? After all, you've already asked the question "And when do you "learn to drive" in this when it's every other year and bad snow, every 5-10 years?" YOU DON'T, YOU LEAVE IT PARKED!
