  • Your hearing cannot be replaced. Once it's diminished, a hearing aid may help you make the most of what you have left, but it's not the same as your "factory original" hearing capacity. Andrew Wright from SureFire joins Caleb to tell us about SureFire's Sonic Defenders EP series of highly effective AND very affordable ear plugs. They're made of soft polymer that easily molds to the "concha bowl" of your ear - the part of the outer ear where you put ear plugs. This produces a tight seal to keep those harmful gunshot decibels from turning you into that guy/gal who constantly says, "Eh, what did ya say?"
With SureFire's EP4 plugs, you can choose between two levels of noise reduction: 24 dB with the filter cap closed and 12 dB with the filter cap open. The 12 dB setting is handy when you're a good distance away from the firing line and want to hear conversation but still want some hearing protection. EP5 plugs delete the filter cap, making them solid to provide a straight 26 dB of noise reduction. Like the EP4s, they have soft polymer cups, so they're easy to insert into and remove from the ear while still producing a tight seal.
EP7 plugs have the filter caps like the EP4s, but they also have soft memory foam Canal Comply Tips that expand to fit tightly in the ear. Roll and squeeze the tip, then pop it into your ear and hold it while it inflates to produce a super tight seal. This adds up to a 28 dB NRR (noise reduction rating) with the filter cap in. EP7 plugs are extremely comfortable - great for all-day wear. For maximum protection, EP10 plugs are solid like the EP5s and have the EP7 expanding Comply foam tips. They are SureFire's most quieting plugs of all, with a 30 dB NRR.
Sonic Defender EP plugs fit comfortably UNDER muff protectors, making them great for times when you're dealing with really loud gunfire and want to double up on your hearing protection.
These SureFire plugs are also very affordable, between $15 and $25, depending on model. At these prices, there's no excuse for NOT having good hearing protection!

Motorcycle hearing protection! I found and use these on all my motorcycles. It filters out the dangerous low frequency engine and wind noise but I can still hear my comms and EMS on the road. All day comfortable and stays in place taking helmet on and off. Great product.

My personal favorite is the EP5 and I own several pairs. I keep one in my range bag, one in my go bag, one in my camping bag, and one in my rifle bag. These are by and far superior to even many over the ear hearing protection. There are no gaps created by sunglasses or getting pushed off slightly by your cheek weld.

It's not enough. I own those very headphones. And they only range to at most 24 NRR.
Shooting unsuppressed, especially indoors, one should double up on ear protection, which to my knowledge is whatever NRR is hire + 5.
My advice if you do regular shooting, especially around others also shooting is to double up for at least a 35 nrr.

I have several sets of the EP7’s. I keep one in my semi for when I have to go into a factory. One is in my travel bag and is used on planes or concerts (usually with the filter open). One is in my range bag for obvious reasons and one stays in my hunting bag just in case I’m not using my “whisper pickle” or my Walker’s die. I love them because they won’t slide out with sweat and they just the right mix of block out and bleed through. Also, I have Rx glasses and muffs can get uncomfortable after a while.

I have one set of EP4s in my range bag as backup for my electronic ear pro. But I also have two or three for motorcycling. With the cap open it has enough NRR to cut wind noise. I cut the caps off since they’d otherwise run on the helmet liner.

I've been wearing EP10's for about 8 years... before that I was using over ear hearing protection. The EP10's are tip-top, and I will not use anything else... wash the outer retention rings with soap/water, wipe the Comply Canal Tips regularly, and replace them when they start to fall apart (that is expected with ANY soft foam canal tips). In my opinion, these are best inner ear protection you can buy.

Target practice people - I'm an old man and I've been target practice all my life and it only took one time and probably 20 rounds to damage my hearing, I went target practice and instead of taking my good quality hearing protection I took the orange looking ear plugs you buy for $5 dollars and for some reason I didn't push in all the way into my ears and on the way home I noticed what sounded like a broken radio speaker and yes it was my hearing, so now I need hearing aids, I'm just saying people please always use the best quality hearing protection you can buy and use it properly and use it every time you go target practiceing.

I just bought a pair of these recently and used them while fishing. The report from NATO fish hooks was rather comfortable with them in. I did, however, find them a bit difficult to insert them effectively as there isn't much to grab onto with the fingertips.
