This was a bit of a fun jam done in a James Brown style with a touch of Otis Redding (Ain't gonna call me 'Mr. Pitiful'). Robert sings to "take it to the bridge" (a la James Brown) with the joke being that this song doesn't have a bridge. Also, Jimmy had wanted to include a sheet in the album of printed dance steps for a made up dance called "the crunge" but it would take too long to produce/print, etc. and would delay the album release too much. Sometimes they would include a bit of The Crunge during their "Whole Lotta Love medley" in concert with Robert calling out "I can't...I can't...I can't find the bridge".
yes! the song was actually in response to critics who said you can’t dance to their music - and (at least by the time the CD came out) the inside of the case DID have “dance steps” haha
I think true Zeppelin fans are for one thing somewhat musically inclined or collectors, if not actual musicians because they are open to the diversity and understand the complexities of this song even if it is not their favourite. True Zeppelin fans will never categorize any of their songs as BAD because there is always something new or innovative involved. If a song is not GREAT which most Zeppelin songs are, they are still interesting, cool, creative and there is always elements to like. I for one have always been a fan of this song.
I’ve been watching your videos bro for 3 years and still dig them. I swear these guys could play under water with no instruments and still make it sound Great!!! Rock on!!¡
My favorite part is the end. When they were finishing the song and there was no musical bridge during their playing, and they asked, "Where's the bridge?" At the end.
I'm actually shocked that ppl hate this 😂...how could you NOT like this funk?!? To each his own but I LOOOOVE this one...."where's that confounded bridge?"
First time in *ages* I'd heard this song. At first, I couldn't remember what it was from the title, but if it says Led Zep, I'm all about it. As soon as I heard, I remembered "Where's that confounded bridge?" and busted out laughing. This is a fun-ass song!
The keyboards (synth, I think on "The Crunge" are played by Bassist John Paul Jones. Their first album has the song "Your Time Is Gonna Come" which features him on organ extensively. Great reaction/review!
For years I didn’t realize it was a sorta “tip of the hat” to James Brown, and was really happy to learn it was, as James will always be Soul Brother #1, Mr. Dynamite, The Godfather of Funk and easily one of the greatest performers in the history of American Music.
LOLOL... Listened to Led Zep growing up. I never thought about them as the great grandfather of hip hop, but yeah, I see what you're saying. It does fit! :) When I hear The Crunge, I totally hear James Brown singing over the top.
Nice dance scenes. I never realized how Plant's vocals were so seamless, like another instrument cruising in and around the other guys with his own melodies. A band full of goats.
Plants vocals always suited whatever genre song they did, my opinion, that’s one reason he’s the greatest singer. He could make singing the phone book sound amazing, his range tone & textures are so amazing.
Anyone who digs Rock/Funk mix should check out Deep Purple's "Stormbringer" and "Come Taste the Band" albums. Glenn Hughes had a huge influence on those and Jon Lord brings a very different organ sound into his setup. Very different from their more well known stuff. Unlike me, that's my woman's favorite period from Purple.
I love your videos... There are a ton of Zeppelin songs with piano/keyboards - Which played brilliantly by John Paul Jones, who plays bass pedals along with them... That's what makes him so talented and them so successful! Stairway to Heaven, Since I've been Loving You, No Quarter, Misty Mountain Hop, trampled under foot, Kashmir - just to name a few!
I find this song to be incredible so put me in the "he loved it" column. I may have found it a bit strange when I first heard it years ago but it WILL hit you at some point. So completely unique like the rest of the album Houses of the Holy. Sure, props to J.P. Jones for his bass part but his keyboard line is great as well. Plant's vocal extremely unique (imo) Imagine if they had succeeded in finding that confounded bridge : )
Not my favorite Zep song but I did laugh when I first heard it. My high school garage band played it. We took turns blurting out "Where's that confounded bridge?"
Ya know I read in Stairway To Heaven book by Richard Cole that.....D'YER MAKER is an accented question of a kinda groovy slang asking...😊😊 Did you Make Her. We all know what that means😅😅
For FEMALE FRIDAYS!!! MARY CUTRUFELLO "Goodnight Dark Angel''; "Miss You #3'''; "Sunny Day" ALL Studio Versions. A Soul-Sister who RAWHKSSS!! On Guitar and Vocals!! Give her listens-SEE what you Missed Since the mid 1990s. TOMMY BOLIN "Dreamer" A MUST!; "Wild Dogs"; "Post Toastee" and The James Gang "Alexis". Tommy on Guitars, Vocals and Songwriting on "Alexis". I'm "Betting" that WHEN you hear ALL 4 That You Too will be a forever Tommy Bolin Fan!!
When I heard this for the first time was in the 90’s I thought it was the Red Hot Chili Peppers until I heard the singer(definitely not Anthony Kiedis)..back then I wasn’t a Zep fan but that song opened me up to them..btw John Bohnam’s fav music wasn’t rock, It was R&B
Tom Petty heard the Aerosmith Run-DMC track . Thought it sounded good, so they did a dance mix to " Forget about me , make it better" They didn't know what Looping was. If you listen to it you'll think it's looped . It's not !
You have to understand the joke Led Zeppelin offered us. It is a tribute to James Brown but the song keeps cycling, there is no bridge in the song. Plant says "Take it".....the bridge never comes. Where's that confounded bridge?
I love that song, one of my favorite ! Its catchy, but rythmically its a nightmare . 9/8,-6/4,4/4 kind of thing .. Like Lets Boots by Jeff Beck, or Cosmic Strut by Mahavishnu Orchestra , both with drummer Nadara michael walden. Its very deceiving.

Interesting trivia about the dance steps!
@@antarcticorb9197 I've heard bootlegs where they'd start playing it and Robert would say something like "Let's do 'the crunge'."
yes! the song was actually in response to critics who said you can’t dance to their music - and (at least by the time the CD came out) the inside of the case DID have “dance steps” haha
I actually enjoy this cut, the homage to James Brown, the humor of Zep, and quite the groove
Searching for The Bridge of the song at the End lol
never would have expected this from led zeppelin

Agreed…I am musically inclined….and a huge LZ fan!
Yup. Still tryin to find the bridge
Great points. Even ‘bad’ Zeppelin song are better than most other bands best songs.
@@edwardcoit9748 i can only think of two bad zeppelin tunes, and they're on the same album
This song is fucking awesome either way haha
One of my favorite Zeppelin songs
I’ve been watching your videos bro for 3 years and still dig them. I swear these guys could play under water with no instruments and still make it sound Great!!! Rock on!!¡
This is a tribute to James Brown! Absolutely love it! 😎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
John Paul Jones and John Bonham (rhythm section) were big on RnB.
Yes, Motown fans right?
My favorite part is the end. When they were finishing the song and there was no musical bridge during their playing, and they asked, "Where's the bridge?" At the end.
Exactly!! We used to jam this & use that line for everything
I'm actually shocked that ppl hate this 😂...how could you NOT like this funk?!? To each his own but I LOOOOVE this one...."where's that confounded bridge?"
Yes sir!
Exactly
I don’t believe anyone can listen to this without being entranced by the groove.
I hope they found the confounded bridge by now!
I'm getting tired!

Zeppelin doesn’t have a BAD song been jamming Zep for 43 great yrs this is a very upbeat jamming song
This song is no "miss." This is high-level homage to James Brown, executed by master musicians.
This is an homage to James Brown quite explicitly.
This song is funky as heck and I love it! Thank you for reacting to this.
Where's that confounded bridge??😁
For years I didn’t realize it was a sorta “tip of the hat” to James Brown, and was really happy to learn it was, as James will always be Soul Brother #1, Mr. Dynamite, The Godfather of Funk and easily one of the greatest performers in the history of American Music.
Absolutely right. No bad Led Zeppelin songs. Love the funky beat. Used to drive to the beach listening to this song. Memories.
I like it but I love all zepp songs cause they are so unique in what they do. A little bit of everything. That's what keeps your interest.
LOLOL... Listened to Led Zep growing up. I never thought about them as the great grandfather of hip hop, but yeah, I see what you're saying. It does fit! :) When I hear The Crunge, I totally hear James Brown singing over the top.
This song is sick! I love it! The Crunge!!!!Zeppelin is #1
Love how you included the video of old skool break dance synched up with the groove beat,
Good job and well noted 👍🏽🎶✊🏾🎵🤘🏼
Good stuff T! Wheres that confounded bridge!
one of my favorite zeppelin songs!!! sooooo funky
Nice dance scenes. I never realized how Plant's vocals were so seamless, like another instrument cruising in and around the other guys with his own melodies. A band full of goats.

Absolutely love this song!
Where's that confounded bridge?

My favorite! Thanks!
Houses of the holy is certainly eclectic - am deeply fond of it and this track no less
This song was a shout out to the hardest working man in show biz, James "take it to the bridge ' Brown.
Okay blew my mind. Zep is my favorite band. That song never sounded better those men break dancing to it ,that was rad.
What?! There are ppl that dont like this song?? Man, that groove tho 🤘🤘
This is a bad ass song🤘❤️

D'er Maker is Reggae from Zeppelin!
I've always liked this Zep song, I like 70s funk as well as 70s Rock
I love it!!
It's unique!
This was Led Zep trying to make their own version of James Brown's "Get Up Offa That Thing."
Doesn't matter the song man. It's Led Zeppelin baby! 🤟🤟👍👍
One of my faves

Great choice, a personal favorite!
Reminiscent of James Brown.

It was a keyboard!
Exellent funky 👏👏👏👏👏🇧🇷
Not my favorite Zep song but I did laugh when I first heard it. My high school garage band played it. We took turns blurting out "Where's that confounded bridge?"
They were doing their best James Brown. Can I get to the bridge?
Sounds like pure funk to me
Nice Coalition to the development of other styles. Including Rap.
Part of this sounds like the music from the opening of Sanford and Son, or maybe it's just me.
They liked playing outside of the box.
Ya know I read in Stairway To Heaven book by Richard Cole that.....D'YER MAKER is an accented question of a kinda groovy slang asking...😊😊 Did you Make Her. We all know what that means😅😅
Yes, you’re talking about funk….which was becoming a popular genre at this time.
This is tribute song to JAMES BROWN.
