It was hot, people did not have water, they ran out of fuel for their cars, and that only made things worse for everyone. There were medical emergencies and people died too. When a city decides to leave, the roads are not going to deal with it well.
I am from the island of Guam. We just had a typhoon with 150 mph winds for 16 hours. We are running though my prepping inventory. Shows like this one helped me with my preparations.
Collect cardboard boxes, flatten them for storage. After you collect a few cut them and duct tape them to fit your window. Then later it a second time, glue and tape them together to make a thick insert. Use two or three layers of duct tape all around the edging to make a snug fit so it has to be tapped in. Finally cover the entire OUTER edges of the window frame (overlap) to block out light. Advanced cardboard covers can be made to create over lapping shutters with hinges so they can be opened during the day for light and ventilation. Cover the cardboard with heavy plastic (construction bags) to help water proof the card board if the window gets broken and it rains. I do A LOT of mail ordering, creativity with cardboard seems nearly endless.
Telling if apples are ripe can be hard. You can taste them, but if you look at the seeds, they tell part of the story. If the seeds are white / light color...unripe. If the seeds are dark...ripe.
I have pre cut plywood for every window. Pre-drilled with anchors installed (test fit was already done) so if there is a storm, I can have 14 windows secured in less than an hour. I am currently working on the same system to secure from the inside as well. If it was a SHTF chaos in the streets situation, I would secure both inside and out. People would be less likely to expend the energy to get through a boarded up home if all the other homes on the street are unprotected. Assuming there was a mob trying to gain entry, bullets can travel both ways through that plywood. Chances are...if you shoot one of say, 5 people trying to get in, you could expect a wall of bullets to come in before they retreat. Chances are they will set your place on fire as they exit. Do you have a plan to put out a fire? do you have someone to cover you (protection from human threat) while you are focused on a fire? If hiding in the attic is something you would consider...always make sure you have tools and a light up there. If the house was on fire, you can break through the roof or siding to escape. Smoke will fill that area the fastest, so consider N95 masks, goggles at the least to store up there. Back yard security. I have a 6' wood fence around my back yard. I added a line of screws pointing up around the perimeter as well as screws pointing through both sides about 2 inches down from the top. This will greatly slow any attempt to jump my fence. I have tarps that I can attach to the fence to stop anyone from looking in between pickets. My Generator is chained to a 4x4 post on the deck. If anyone did cut that heavy chain, I'll surely hear the chain hit the wood deck. I also keep battery operated motion sensors ready to put up, so I would have a heads up if anyone entered my back yard. Entry doors have already been reenforced with the ability to totally seal off the front door for a no access point. (we would only have to focus on the rear door and can exit the back yard through 2 gates) I keep on hand, a small gas generator that will run 7-8 hours on a single gallon of fuel. a whole home dual fuel generator that will run propane or gasoline at a rate of one 15 pound propane tank or 6.6 gallons of gasoline for 6 hours at 50% load. I have my own design solar rechargeable battery generators. (that alone can run lights, heat/AC, and recharge all other battery powered items for the long haul. On the topic of chickens... yes, egg laying hens will cackle after they lay an egg, but you don't need a noisy rooster in order to get daily eggs. (only if you plan to hatch new chicks) Rabbits breed fast and can eat the easiest to grow asian greens that will grow nearly year round. (stock up on salt licks for them) Rabbit and chicken poop are AMAZING fertilizer for gardens... they can also eat a lot of table scraps so you aren't storing expensive feeds. TH-cam and google will help you here, but you can make your own bleach to sanitize water. Non iodized salt and a battery are the main ingredients. You can also hit up youtube, google, amazon and come up with smokeless fire pits or burn barrels. There would still be a smell, but the smoke would be near a non issue. Keep a stock of tarps and drop cloths, screws, nails, basic tools, rechargeable drill/driver, rope, nylon cord, string, clothes pins, buckets etc. This can help with warmth, privacy, rain protection, rain water collection, etc. If you have the means...say a chainsaw...and some time and energy... you can reach out to many tree trimming companies. They have to pay to dispose of the trees they remove. I did this and had a dump truck arrive and drop off tons of live oak. a lot of chainsaw work and a log splitter rental and I ended up with about $5,000 worth of firewood for under $500. Some cinder blocks stacked, I made a rocket stove and fire pit. Warmth, cooking, boiling water, etc. Sometimes the cheapest things can benefit you the most.
You could also make your own methane gas for cooking , by throwing old food scraps into a vat full of water, and a water recycling system from rain buckets that could feed gardens or be filtered to drink
Wow, I think the only thing you're missing is a moat full of either alligators or razor wire. You don't have to feed the razor wire, so that would be my choice
A rocket stove is useful and cast iron cookware. I made a brick one. A fellow from YT showed how to stack the bricks. Simple. Used 28 bricks. I used twigs, dried grass, super-efficient. We had that record power outage and snow storm here in Texas. We still needed to cook. That is how we did it. I did a canned peaches and biscuits cobbler in a Dutch oven and it worked OK. My beef stew went well also. Keep lime on hand as well. Also, a toilet seat for camping. Everyone was using it out back. Once per day, I took care of the bucket with some lime, then dump it in a black plastic bag. After things got back to normal, I had to gather up everything and make a trip to the dump in the pickup. Living off the land? It took from WW2 to the 1980s for wildlife to recover post the Great Depression. Do some reading on the topic. It was terrible on wildlife.

Remember to have high quality bolt cutters to cut fences. You can cut neighbor's chain link fences and pull together to block entry to a housing addition. Extra cars behind the fencing. Hopefully people have bushes with thorns growing at their windows.
You cannot believe how much better informed you help us be. Please do not stop going over and over these video subjects. Drilling is always a good thing, especially for those of us that have never been in a true SHTF. It pushes us to get prepared, as we are able, by making these subjects key to our lives.
I'm going to disagree about boarding up windows from the inside. That's a good way to get your glass broken out, and then when the crisis abates, you have no glass in your windows and may not be able to replace it if the supply chain is down. Also, boarding from the inside allows a strong person to kick the board inward. If you board from the outside, attach your pre-cut plywood with SCREWS and make it flush to the outer frame so that it's hard to get it off without a SERIOUS crowbar. Also, it cannot be kicked in, and it will take a lot longer to get it off the window, which gives you time to get to your weapon and aim it and be ready to fire. The best thing to do is get window bars. They are not as expensive as you imagine, and there are ones that have a safety lever inside the house for fire egress. Also, they can be quite decorative. I see them as a deterrent even in the best of times, because a burglar is not going to try to break into a house that has window bars and a door grill...they will go to a house that is unprotected. I use Nightlocs for my doors at night -- they cannot be kicked in.
A crow bar (or two) can ply off a plywood board on the outside fairly quite and your window glass will be broken anyway! One way to at least slow down a would-be intruder is to plant thorn-bearing plants like roses and/or cactus at the base of your windows!
I was gone for six weeks so a friend told me to put cellophane wrap over the toilet bowl and hold it down tightened there was no odor from the toilet. The sinks I just put the covers over them and so there was no gas is coming up through the tubs for the sinks or the showers but the cellophane wrap work really good over the toilet bowl.
Yeah, I’ve had years to think about all the scenarios, I’m only as strong as my weakest link and right now my youngest is my 8 year old daughter, she’s by no means “weak” but being able to deal with what may need to be dealt with, she’s still an 8 year old. I can’t expect us to maintain a 20 mile pace a day until we get where we need to go.
Thanks for your thoughts here. A few things that seem to be good additions to your list that I have done recently. Outdoor Security Flood lighting I swapped out to solar motion activated. It deters most folks that are casing properties- they just move on to easier things. I set up a system of perimeter alarms using trip wires outside and can set them should things demand it. Also put battery-operated audible alarms on first floor windows and doors. In addition besides boarding windows and doors up, you can throw a half dozen screws into the casing and thread wire back and forth essentially making the opening a cheese cutter. Along with no lights peeking out at night I was once taught by a Dine Navaho Medicine Man to never whistle at night. A whistle carries a long way and you can't hear anything coming for you. Last for now is having a Fire Extinguisher on hand. Many things fire related were discussed but people should have one on their bug out bag, one in the car and at least one in the house. I have two video doorbells, and they both run on battery, and the app will tell you the battery life and when you need to change it. My back door is my weak spot, so I have a video doorbell, a locking storm door, a solid door with a deadbolt, and a wedge bar under the door nob. If anyone tries getting through all that, everyone in a 5 block radius will hear it. My front door has the same setup, but there's a window next to it that I have dowels set in because it's the only one that someone can get in, the others are too high up to reach without a ladder. The best part of my front entry? An 800-watt LED lightbulb! You can clearly see my front porch light from a block away. That, combined with a video doorbell means no one will knock and ambush me. The situation you told about the cop happened to me leaving a job years ago. No shotgun, but I received a blow from a 45 to the head giving me the worst concussion I've ever had and 8 staples to put my scalp back together. Also, remember that you can put a video doorbell inside on a windowsill to allow you to see other angles outside of your home. I did want to also mention that if you're covering your windows with contractors' bags, leave yourself a small piece that can be used as a flap to block the light if you need to open the windows for ventilation (and fresh air of course). I was able to pick up a couple of the camping solar showers, I've not used them camping, instead, I keep them with my blackout supplies. That way I can heat water, at least partially, without using fuel. One option for heating is found in the long haul trucking industry for semi trucks. They make a 12v powered diesel fuel heater for the sleepers. They come with electronic controls and the thermostat fires them up as needed. There is also a battery monitor built in and if the voltage drops to where you cannot start the engine it cuts off. So instead of burning a gallon a hour (that much?) idling the engine you can run for 10 hours on one to two gallons of diesel. With photo cells you can run it during daylight and if you have the capacity recharge the batteries for night. No generator noise. But you can't rely on getting enough sunlight to charge your batteries so a generator is needed. If it also runs on diesel that reduces your fuel type inventory. Generators cannot be well silenced no matter what muffler you put on them. But you can build a “baffle” housing that allows cooling air though and still significantly reduces the noise. Of course if you have a water cooled generator your sound proof housing can be ame quieter with fewer gaps that allow noise out. I did once work a construction site where the construction / sales trailer was powered by a gas turbine powered generator. Very quiet.
I figure that in an emergency, the first 3-4 days, everyone is going to be using their generators, charcoal grill, etc. and creating lots of noises and smells. At least that’s how we do it after a hurricane. After that, it’s best to lay low. With an EMP, panic will set in within a couple days and I plan to spend that time covering windows and getting the house safe. **Florida hot weather tip: after the power goes out, keep the windows closed. It might get stuffy, but it keeps the humidity low.

I live in New Mexico and we almost never have rainy or cloudy days. I have two solar generators and two panels. The large generator can be charged off the two panels combined. I'm currently restoring an old truck toolbox into an EMP shielded box. Just found out it's big enough to fit the solar panels into in addition to the generators. We also have two wells on property and multiple gas generators. One can even run on propane and we have four 100lb tanks that we use.
My research on solar panels showed, based on the effects of partial shading on panels, that polycrystaline panels would be more susceptible to an EMP than would be monocrystaline panels.

Depending on your home set up another way of getting alerted to someone walking outside your window is to have some nut shells spread out along the area outside your window where you have a chance to hear them walking
If you have no way to heat with wood I’d get a kerosene heater. You can heat water and food off the top of it while staying warm. Just get a CO2 warning monitor for the room.
EMP and solar panels. As an computer and eletronics engineer, the answer is honestly "maybe". A lot of the particulars are the going to be your device. But if it's wired to something and the wire isn't shielded, that wire turns into an antenna. I don't mean just insulated but shielded, buried. What isn't buried is exposed. The pulse hits that conductor, turns to power, and things will break. Maybe. Probably. Possibly. Same thing goes for LEDs. Maybe. For the big power boxes, though, their controllers are probably going to get smoked if it isn't disconnected in a faraday cage. Professional opinion doesn't like your odds. But then... still need to charge. Too many unknowns.

One year, some friends in FL sealed off their Laundry room ( which also had an outside door) to keep CO² out of the house, they put their jenny in the laundry room, plugged in the cables they had previously run through the house & sealed off , and last but not least they Parked their 4-Wheeldrive righ up against the door & just for good measure; they chained the genny to the all of the Truck, LOL for some reason nobody eemed to want to Challenge them for wit ...😄
The don't use walls for coverage. Our solution the we came up with for that it's kind of convenient if you have a chainsaw. Where in California and live it extremely close to Sequoia Forest. If sh-t happens our solution is to take our chainsaw go out in the forest and cut a bunch of logs about chest height 6in in diameter or thicker. We have a designated survival room AKA our living room. Our prep for it is to line it with these logs that we cut if that time ever comes and strap them together with a roll of metal plumbers tape. The idea is to not cut them ahead of time so they're green. We want them green because a average bullet of just about any caliber cannot penetrate through them at 6 inches. We want the logs to be about chest height because you can sit in chair and feel safe lay down and sleep and comfortably defend from that height. 1. Boarding windows from the inside won't make much of a difference, & likely make it easier since they can kick it in. Plus you have no protection on your windows 2. Fire Bad, especially without a fire department or little access to water. I suspect in burb & urban areas makeshift stoves will set whole neighborhoods on fire. All it takes is one careless person to set their home on fire causing the entire neighborhood to go up in flames. Best option for cooking is a small propane camping stove with a few 20 pound propane tanks and several 5-gal. buckets full of water.
Hey Don, have you done a review of the latest Coleman Guide 2-burner gas camping stove from Sportsman Guide? I got one with all the attachments for using standard propane tanks, and the one pound tanks. This stove even burns on regular unleaded gasoline and of course Coleman white gas. Its a great emergency way to cook, just set it up outside and be prepared with lots of options. Worth mentioning. You always have great content and fun to watch the live shows with Robbie.
I have wood, propane/butane, sterno, and alcohol stoves. And by far the alcohol is easiest & cheapest to buy and store. I've made my own alcohol stoves, and have given some out as gifts two friends who don't camp and only have electric stoves in their homes.
I got a Mr. Buddy heater but it will use up a small 1 lb container of propane in around 3 hours. So make sure you save up a bunch of propane tanks or get a adapter to use the your 20 pound barbeque grill tank. Since the Mr. Buddy heater has a pilot light mode, remember that it still uses up the propane in this mode. I prefer to turn the propane off at the tank and then let it burn out on it's own. That way I use all the gas for heat. If you are heating up a room, try to keep the doors closed but have a carbon monoxide detector in the space to alert you if the level builds up. You want to have some fresh air coming into the space during the time you are using the heater, but you can seal with rages under the doors when the heater is turned off. Keep it at least 3 feet away from items that will burn, you do not want to burn down your shelter.
Erect a small tent inside to sleep in, use hot water bottles or heated bricks/rocks wrapped in towels in the foot of your sleeping bags to keep you warm and cozy! No need to use a space heater!
When there is no power everything is very quit and dark. When there are no cars on a road you can hear a passing car or any gas generator from miles. When everything is black you can see any light straight away.
I’m very fortunate to live in very rural situation that has no way of my property being approached without my knowledge and it’s just the natural layout that makes it possible. I’m not going to prep to live in hell… I simply don’t won’t to do that. I am partial crippled from bad equipment accident but I can get all my stuff done just slower. Im not even interested in gun fights or living amidst thieves I just wanna go HOME at that point
When SHTF a nice big bunker sounds like the place to be to ride it out.......Wrong....everyone that knows the bunker exists will head there unless they have alternative options....then what, you throw the doors open to hundreds of people and all the others they tell along the way? Of course not you plan to bunker down, right. Trouble is there will be hundreds on the outside trying to force their way in ..and instead of providing you a comfortable safe place to adapt to events youl will find your resources devoted to monitoring and guarding.....and the moment you try opening a door you will be attacked.. A bunker is only useful if your the only person that can find it..... as no one realises telling anyone else, even family members that might let it slip is going to have a bad outcome.... and when I say bad, no amount of ammunition will ever be enough once you open that can of worms. Go to ground long before you need to is what has to happen..

I suppose the higher stuff is slightly more secure, but a desperate guy could use a ladder and get in there. In my suburban area, where you have assembly-line houses from the 1050s & 1960s, there are streets where every house has a big picture window in the front wall! A 4x6 foot door straight to your living room!
Don't put your door where someone can barricade you in. You also better hide your air intake so someone can't just pour in gasoline or some other poison. Two or more exits would be advised.
We’ve been wood dependent for heat for a few years now. Great way to quickly help wood dry out is to just stack it near the wood stove or fireplace. Just keep it away from potential sparks or flying ash!
And to think we all thought an elderly gentleman was crazy collecting wood pots pans people put out, HisSocial worker had to keep hiring skips to dispose of it all. How upset he kept getting. He died a couple of months ago but maybe just maybe he had a point really!
I found pairing good motion sensors with security cameras works extremely well. Putting the monitors where you spend most of your time is the best place for them. Steel security doors act like screen doors in the summertime and stronger than a regular door. Good luck out there.
The best thing is a 12 volt deep cycle boat batery and a 12 volt to 110 volt a.c. adapter. Most auto suppy stores sell them. A 400 watt size doesnt cost much. For a little more cash You can get one large enough to run a small microwave oven. You can run a few lights, a fan and electric blanket for about four days and nights on a fully charged boat battery. Two batteries will last over a week. Solar panels can recharge one battery while you use the other. Tea light candles cost about five cents each and burn for five hours. They store forever in a cool place. They put out enough light so you dont trip I've the furniture but not enough to read by. Light is more of a morale builder than anything else.
It was interesting you mentioned the Road a movie always lurking in the back of my mind . Most people don’t know the cannibal thing happened in China during the Great Leap Forward 50’s into 60’s and also in Cambodia during Khmer Rouge. It is unthinkable but may even be happening in Venezuela today. The thought that we could devolve into that is so frightening. I can never understand the current obsession with zombies as a cultural icon and something to parody.
Something to think about is foods kept in the freezer. We are going to start cooking raw meat before storing it in the freezer. If we had no electricity there would not be a safe way to thaw meat before it would spoil. So if all meat in freezer is cooked then we could warm up on a camp stove or a grill. But if we had to cook from a raw form then we would be depleting what little fuel we would have on hand. We are in a townhouse , so it's not like we could easily cook outside as if we lived in the country.
Be careful where you bury your trash, you don't want to contaminate water run off into your water source (damn, river) or water flow across your land where you might to grow food.

Most ppl here seem totally blinded & aren’t prepping cuz they think the govt will always take care of them 🙄 I’ve been trying to prep as much as I can on a fixed income for the last 2-3 years, so I’ll protect what I have with my life. Houses here are a lot closer together than they are in USA so the whole block would hear my petrol generator running. I do have a Jackery 1000 too so I’ll obviously use that as much as possible but it’ll be hard to disguise the smell of food, the petrol generator noise etc coming from the house 🤷🏼♀️
Longterm, you would have to make it to an island on the west coast most likely or be at sea. The only other option is to hide. People will be smashing in doors, and turning houses upside down for food, medicine and supplies. If you manage to stop 1 or 2 people, lets say you get the drop on them with a booby-trap or something, you just alert the rest that there is something worth getting. They will just set your house on fire and smoke you out. My ancestors used to hide from the English invaders - you have to think like a guerilla.
Get a tent to put up inside the house if no heat and have some wool blankets. Sleep in the tent with the blankets to stay warm. 😮If you cant have a gun or a knife due to government rules get a stick, hammer, tire tool for self defense. Wasp spray is a good defense tool.
Even hair spray is a eye irritant and a potential (but dangerous) flame thrower! As far as the smell of food, stock up on foods that don't need to be heated to cook!

A brick or block house with a metal roof is quite fire resistant! A thick layer of stacco with help make your walls fire resistance! Your doors will be the only place where stacco would not be practical, perhaps a sheet metal outer layer on your doors would help with that!
Regarding pallets, i assume they’re all pressure treated, if they’re outside for a few years does the pressure treatment dissipate?? I have about a dozen of them i was going to throw out. Not sure if it’s worth keeping them or not??
Most of them are also treated with pesticides, bugs love paper products, as well as food and plants, which is mostly what is shipped across country on pallets or used in local grocery and gardening nursery centers.
Don't worry about using pallets for firewood. Some were treated with a gas but it is long gone. Don't burn treated construction lumber in a fireplace with a metal chimney pipe. The chemicals can corrode the chimney pipe.
I can't get WD-40 to burn. I tried to spray it on something and light it and then spray it into the air and ignite the vapor. Nope. I was hoping to have an aerosol fire starter that was easy and clean to carry. What am I missing ?

I am from the island of Guam. We just had a typhoon with 150 mph winds for 16 hours. We are running though my prepping inventory. Shows like this one helped me with my preparations.
Collect cardboard boxes, flatten them for storage.
After you collect a few cut them and duct tape them to fit your window.
Then later it a second time, glue and tape them together to make a thick insert.
Use two or three layers of duct tape all around the edging to make a snug fit so it has to be tapped in.
Finally cover the entire OUTER edges of the window frame (overlap) to block out light.
Advanced cardboard covers can be made to create over lapping shutters with hinges so they can be opened during the day for light and ventilation.
Cover the cardboard with heavy plastic (construction bags) to help water proof the card board if the window gets broken and it rains.
I do A LOT of mail ordering, creativity with cardboard seems nearly endless.

I have pre cut plywood for every window. Pre-drilled with anchors installed (test fit was already done) so if there is a storm, I can have 14 windows secured in less than an hour. I am currently working on the same system to secure from the inside as well. If it was a SHTF chaos in the streets situation, I would secure both inside and out. People would be less likely to expend the energy to get through a boarded up home if all the other homes on the street are unprotected.
Assuming there was a mob trying to gain entry, bullets can travel both ways through that plywood. Chances are...if you shoot one of say, 5 people trying to get in, you could expect a wall of bullets to come in before they retreat.
Chances are they will set your place on fire as they exit. Do you have a plan to put out a fire? do you have someone to cover you (protection from human threat) while you are focused on a fire?
If hiding in the attic is something you would consider...always make sure you have tools and a light up there. If the house was on fire, you can break through the roof or siding to escape.
Smoke will fill that area the fastest, so consider N95 masks, goggles at the least to store up there.
Back yard security. I have a 6' wood fence around my back yard. I added a line of screws pointing up around the perimeter as well as screws pointing through both sides about 2 inches down from the top. This will greatly slow any attempt to jump my fence.
I have tarps that I can attach to the fence to stop anyone from looking in between pickets.
My Generator is chained to a 4x4 post on the deck. If anyone did cut that heavy chain, I'll surely hear the chain hit the wood deck.
I also keep battery operated motion sensors ready to put up, so I would have a heads up if anyone entered my back yard.
Entry doors have already been reenforced with the ability to totally seal off the front door for a no access point. (we would only have to focus on the rear door and can exit the back yard through 2 gates)
I keep on hand, a small gas generator that will run 7-8 hours on a single gallon of fuel. a whole home dual fuel generator that will run propane or gasoline at a rate of one 15 pound propane tank or 6.6 gallons of gasoline for 6 hours at 50% load.
I have my own design solar rechargeable battery generators. (that alone can run lights, heat/AC, and recharge all other battery powered items for the long haul.
On the topic of chickens... yes, egg laying hens will cackle after they lay an egg, but you don't need a noisy rooster in order to get daily eggs. (only if you plan to hatch new chicks)
Rabbits breed fast and can eat the easiest to grow asian greens that will grow nearly year round. (stock up on salt licks for them)
Rabbit and chicken poop are AMAZING fertilizer for gardens... they can also eat a lot of table scraps so you aren't storing expensive feeds.
TH-cam and google will help you here, but you can make your own bleach to sanitize water. Non iodized salt and a battery are the main ingredients.
You can also hit up youtube, google, amazon and come up with smokeless fire pits or burn barrels.
There would still be a smell, but the smoke would be near a non issue.
Keep a stock of tarps and drop cloths, screws, nails, basic tools, rechargeable drill/driver, rope, nylon cord, string, clothes pins, buckets etc. This can help with warmth, privacy, rain protection, rain water collection, etc.
If you have the means...say a chainsaw...and some time and energy... you can reach out to many tree trimming companies. They have to pay to dispose of the trees they remove.
I did this and had a dump truck arrive and drop off tons of live oak. a lot of chainsaw work and a log splitter rental and I ended up with about $5,000 worth of firewood for under $500.
Some cinder blocks stacked, I made a rocket stove and fire pit. Warmth, cooking, boiling water, etc. Sometimes the cheapest things can benefit you the most.

You could also make your own methane gas for cooking , by throwing old food scraps into a vat full of water, and a water recycling system from rain buckets that could feed gardens or be filtered to drink

A rocket stove is useful and cast iron cookware. I made a brick one. A fellow from YT showed how to stack the bricks. Simple. Used 28 bricks. I used twigs, dried grass, super-efficient. We had that record power outage and snow storm here in Texas. We still needed to cook. That is how we did it. I did a canned peaches and biscuits cobbler in a Dutch oven and it worked OK. My beef stew went well also.
Keep lime on hand as well. Also, a toilet seat for camping. Everyone was using it out back. Once per day, I took care of the bucket with some lime, then dump it in a black plastic bag. After things got back to normal, I had to gather up everything and make a trip to the dump in the pickup.
Living off the land? It took from WW2 to the 1980s for wildlife to recover post the Great Depression. Do some reading on the topic. It was terrible on wildlife.

Remember to have high quality bolt cutters to cut fences. You can cut neighbor's chain link fences and pull together to block entry to a housing addition. Extra cars behind the fencing. Hopefully people have bushes with thorns growing at their windows.
You cannot believe how much better informed you help us be. Please do not stop going over and over these video subjects. I'm going to disagree about boarding up windows from the inside. That's a good way to get your glass broken out, and then when the crisis abates, you have no glass in your windows and may not be able to replace it if the supply chain is down. Also, boarding from the inside allows a strong person to kick the board inward. If you board from the outside, attach your pre-cut plywood with SCREWS and make it flush to the outer frame so that it's hard to get it off without a SERIOUS crowbar. Also, it cannot be kicked in, and it will take a lot longer to get it off the window, which gives you time to get to your weapon and aim it and be ready to fire. The best thing to do is get window bars. They are not as expensive as you imagine, and there are ones that have a safety lever inside the house for fire egress. Also, they can be quite decorative. I see them as a deterrent even in the best of times, because a burglar is not going to try to break into a house that has window bars and a door grill...they will go to a house that is unprotected. I use Nightlocs for my doors at night -- they cannot be kicked in.
A crow bar (or two) can ply off a plywood board on the outside fairly quite and your window glass will be broken anyway! One way to at least slow down a would-be intruder is to plant thorn-bearing plants like roses and/or cactus at the base of your windows!

I was gone for six weeks so a friend told me to put cellophane wrap over the toilet bowl and hold it down tightened there was no odor from the toilet. The sinks I just put the covers over them and so there was no gas is coming up through the tubs for the sinks or the showers but the cellophane wrap work really good over the toilet bowl.
Yeah, I’ve had years to think about all the scenarios, I’m only as strong as my weakest link and right now my youngest is my 8 year old daughter, she’s by no means “weak” but being able to deal with what may need to be dealt with, she’s still an 8 year old. I can’t expect us to maintain a 20 mile pace a day until we get where we need to go.
Maybe you could use a kids’ wagon to pull her with, that or a bike she could ride beside you.

Outdoor Security Flood lighting I swapped out to solar motion activated. It deters most folks that are casing properties- they just move on to easier things.
I set up a system of perimeter alarms using trip wires outside and can set them should things demand it. Also put battery-operated audible alarms on first floor windows and doors. In addition besides boarding windows and doors up, you can throw a half dozen screws into the casing and thread wire back and forth essentially making the opening a cheese cutter.
Along with no lights peeking out at night I was once taught by a Dine Navaho Medicine Man to never whistle at night. A whistle carries a long way and you can't hear anything coming for you.
Last for now is having a Fire Extinguisher on hand. Many things fire related were discussed but people should have one on their bug out bag, one in the car and at least one in the house.

I have two video doorbells, and they both run on battery, and the app will tell you the battery life and when you need to change it. My back door is my weak spot, so I have a video doorbell, a locking storm door, a solid door with a deadbolt, and a wedge bar under the door nob. If anyone tries getting through all that, everyone in a 5 block radius will hear it. My front door has the same setup, but there's a window next to it that I have dowels set in because it's the only one that someone can get in, the others are too high up to reach without a ladder. The best part of my front entry? An 800-watt LED lightbulb! You can clearly see my front porch light from a block away. That, combined with a video doorbell means no one will knock and ambush me. The situation you told about the cop happened to me leaving a job years ago. No shotgun, but I received a blow from a 45 to the head giving me the worst concussion I've ever had and 8 staples to put my scalp back together. Also, remember that you can put a video doorbell inside on a windowsill to allow you to see other angles outside of your home.
I did want to also mention that if you're covering your windows with contractors' bags, leave yourself a small piece that can be used as a flap to block the light if you need to open the windows for ventilation (and fresh air of course). I was able to pick up a couple of the camping solar showers, I've not used them camping, instead, I keep them with my blackout supplies. That way I can heat water, at least partially, without using fuel. Food will be the most valuable thing to have in shtf. And lead to keep it.
One option for heating is found in the long haul trucking industry for semi trucks. They make a 12v powered diesel fuel heater for the sleepers. They come with electronic controls and the thermostat fires them up as needed. There is also a battery monitor built in and if the voltage drops to where you cannot start the engine it cuts off. So instead of burning a gallon a hour (that much?) idling the engine you can run for 10 hours on one to two gallons of diesel.
With photo cells you can run it during daylight and if you have the capacity recharge the batteries for night. No generator noise.
But you can't rely on getting enough sunlight to charge your batteries so a generator is needed. If it also runs on diesel that reduces your fuel type inventory.
Generators cannot be well silenced no matter what muffler you put on them. But you can build a “baffle” housing that allows cooling air though and still significantly reduces the noise. Of course if you have a water cooled generator your sound proof housing can be ame quieter with fewer gaps that allow noise out.
I did once work a construction site where the construction / sales trailer was powered by a gas turbine powered generator. Very quiet.
I figure that in an emergency, the first 3-4 days, everyone is going to be using their generators, charcoal grill, etc. and creating lots of noises and smells. At least that’s how we do it after a hurricane. After that, it’s best to lay low. With an EMP, panic will set in within a couple days and I plan to spend that time covering windows and getting the house safe. **Florida hot weather tip: after the power goes out, keep the windows closed. It might get stuffy, but it keeps the humidity low.

I live in New Mexico and we almost never have rainy or cloudy days. I have two solar generators and two panels. The large generator can be charged off the two panels combined. I'm currently restoring an old truck toolbox into an EMP shielded box. Just found out it's big enough to fit the solar panels into in addition to the generators. We also have two wells on property and multiple gas generators. One can even run on propane and we have four 100lb tanks that we use.
I use old broom sticks to saw up and wedge the windows down.
My research on solar panels showed, based on the effects of partial shading on panels, that polycrystaline panels would be more susceptible to an EMP than would be monocrystaline panels.

Depending on your home set up another way of getting alerted to someone walking outside your window is to have some nut shells spread out along the area outside your window where you have a chance to hear them walking
If you have no way to heat with wood I’d get a kerosene heater. You can heat water and food off the top of it while staying warm. Just get a CO2 warning monitor for the room.
EMP and solar panels. As an computer and eletronics engineer, the answer is honestly "maybe". A lot of the particulars are the going to be your device. But if it's wired to something and the wire isn't shielded, that wire turns into an antenna. I don't mean just insulated but shielded, buried. What isn't buried is exposed. The pulse hits that conductor, turns to power, and things will break. Maybe. Probably. Possibly. Same thing goes for LEDs. Maybe. For the big power boxes, though, their controllers are probably going to get smoked if it isn't disconnected in a faraday cage. Professional opinion doesn't like your odds. But then... still need to charge. Too many unknowns.

One year, some friends in FL sealed off their Laundry room ( which also had an outside door) to keep CO² out of the house, they put their jenny in the laundry room, plugged in the cables they had previously run through the house & sealed off , and last but not least they Parked their 4-Wheeldrive righ up against the door & just for good measure; they chained the genny to the all of the Truck, LOL for some reason nobody eemed to want to Challenge them for wit ...😄
The don't use walls for coverage. Our solution the we came up with for that it's kind of convenient if you have a chainsaw. Where in California and live it extremely close to Sequoia Forest. If sh-t happens our solution is to take our chainsaw go out in the forest and cut a bunch of logs about chest height 6in in diameter or thicker. We have a designated survival room AKA our living room. Our prep for it is to line it with these logs that we cut if that time ever comes and strap them together with a roll of metal plumbers tape. The idea is to not cut them ahead of time so they're green. We want them green because a average bullet of just about any caliber cannot penetrate through them at 6 inches. We want the logs to be about chest height because you can sit in chair and feel safe lay down and sleep and comfortably defend from that height. Just figured I would share our thoughts on how we've overcome the idea of stray bullets during shtf

What exact geiger counter were you referring to, there are so many?
1. Boarding windows from the inside won't make much of a difference, & likely make it easier since they can kick it in. Plus you have no protection on your windows
2. Fire Bad, especially without a fire department or little access to water. I suspect in burb & urban areas makeshift stoves will set whole neighborhoods on fire. All it takes is one careless person to set their home on fire causing the entire neighborhood to go up in flames. Best option for cooking is a small propane camping stove with a few 20 pound propane tanks and several 5-gal. buckets full of water.

Hey Don, have you done a review of the latest Coleman Guide 2-burner gas camping stove from Sportsman Guide? I got one with all the attachments for using standard propane tanks, and the one pound tanks. This stove even burns on regular unleaded gasoline and of course Coleman white gas. Its a great emergency way to cook, just set it up outside and be prepared with lots of options. Worth mentioning. You always have great content and fun to watch the live shows with Robbie.

I have wood, propane/butane, sterno, and alcohol stoves. And by far the alcohol is easiest & cheapest to buy and store.
I've made my own alcohol stoves, and have given some out as gifts two friends who don't camp and only have electric stoves in their homes.

I got a Mr. Buddy heater but it will use up a small 1 lb container of propane in around 3 hours. So make sure you save up a bunch of propane tanks or get a adapter to use the your 20 pound barbeque grill tank. Since the Mr. Buddy heater has a pilot light mode, remember that it still uses up the propane in this mode. I prefer to turn the propane off at the tank and then let it burn out on it's own. That way I use all the gas for heat. If you are heating up a room, try to keep the doors closed but have a carbon monoxide detector in the space to alert you if the level builds up. You want to have some fresh air coming into the space during the time you are using the heater, but you can seal with rages under the doors when the heater is turned off. Keep it at least 3 feet away from items that will burn, you do not want to burn down your shelter.
Erect a small tent inside to sleep in, use hot water bottles or heated bricks/rocks wrapped in towels in the foot of your sleeping bags to keep you warm and cozy! No need to use a space heater!

Of course not you plan to bunker down, right. Trouble is there will be hundreds on the outside trying to force their way in ..and instead of providing you a comfortable safe place to adapt to events youl will find your resources devoted to monitoring and guarding.....and the moment you try opening a door you will be attacked..

Don't put your door where someone can barricade you in. You also better hide your air intake so someone can't just pour in gasoline or some other poison. Two or more exits would be advised.
My generator is in my garafe next to the circuit set-up. It has a fan the generator powers which pushes the cm to the outside via a vent.

We’ve been wood dependent for heat for a few years now. Great way to quickly help wood dry out is to just stack it near the wood stove or fireplace. Just keep it away from potential sparks or flying ash!
And to think we all thought an elderly gentleman was crazy collecting wood pots pans people put out, HisSocial worker had to keep hiring skips to dispose of it all. How upset he kept getting. He died a couple of months ago but maybe just maybe he had a point really!

I found pairing good motion sensors with security cameras works extremely well. Putting the monitors where you spend most of your time is the best place for them. Steel security doors act like screen doors in the summertime and stronger than a regular door. Good luck out there.

You can run a few lights, a fan and electric blanket for about four days and nights on a fully charged boat battery.
Two batteries will last over a week.
Solar panels can recharge one battery while you use the other.
Tea light candles cost about five cents each and burn for five hours.

Something to think about is foods kept in the freezer. We are going to start cooking raw meat before storing it in the freezer. If we had no electricity there would not be a safe way to thaw meat before it would spoil. So if all meat in freezer is cooked then we could warm up on a camp stove or a grill. But if we had to cook from a raw form then we would be depleting what little fuel we would have on hand. We are in a townhouse , so it's not like we could easily cook outside as if we lived in the country.
Be careful where you bury your trash, you don't want to contaminate water run off into your water source (damn, river) or water flow across your land where you might to grow food.
What’s the best form of defence for us in UK since we have no guns (especially since I’m trying to buy my first house & will be living alone - although I don’t know what effect an economic crash will have on property prices)? Most ppl here seem totally blinded & aren’t prepping cuz they think the govt will always take care of them 🙄 I’ve been trying to prep as much as I can on a fixed income for the last 2-3 years, so I’ll protect what I have with my life. Houses here are a lot closer together than they are in USA so the whole block would hear my petrol generator running. I do have a Jackery 1000 too so I’ll obviously use that as much as possible but it’ll be hard to disguise the smell of food, the petrol generator noise etc coming from the house 🤷🏼♀️
Longterm, you would have to make it to an island on the west coast most likely or be at sea.
The only other option is to hide. People will be smashing in doors, and turning houses upside down for food, medicine and supplies. If you manage to stop 1 or 2 people, lets say you get the drop on them with a booby-trap or something, you just alert the rest that there is something worth getting. They will just set your house on fire and smoke you out. My ancestors used to hide from the English invaders - you have to think like a guerilla.

Get a tent to put up inside the house if no heat and have some wool blankets. Sleep in the tent with the blankets to stay warm. 😮If you cant have a gun or a knife due to government rules get a stick, hammer, tire tool for self defense. Wasp spray is a good defense tool.
Even hair spray is a eye irritant and a potential (but dangerous) flame thrower! As far as the smell of food, stock up on foods that don't need to be heated to cook!

A brick or block house with a metal roof is quite fire resistant! A thick layer of stacco with help make your walls fire resistance! Your doors will be the only place where stacco would not be practical, perhaps a sheet metal outer layer on your doors would help with that!

Regarding pallets, i assume they’re all pressure treated, if they’re outside for a few years does the pressure treatment dissipate?? I have about a dozen of them i was going to throw out. Not sure if it’s worth keeping them or not??
Most of them are also treated with pesticides, bugs love paper products, as well as food and plants, which is mostly what is shipped across country on pallets or used in local grocery and gardening nursery centers.
Don't worry about using pallets for firewood. Some were treated with a gas but it is long gone.
Don't burn treated construction lumber in a fireplace with a metal chimney pipe.
The chemicals can corrode the chimney pipe.

I can't get WD-40 to burn. I tried to spray it on something and light it and then spray it into the air and ignite the vapor. Nope. I was hoping to have an aerosol fire starter that was easy and clean to carry. What am I missing ?
