    Great experiment

    Interesting... and a very valid point. It never would have occurred to me to consider that some weight loss can be attributed to worms eating & converting it into metabolic activity 👍🏻 That is the reason you find so little frass / poop after black soldier fly larvae eat something - a very large part of what they consume is converted into body growth and physical activity

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly! If this experiment was with BSF I would have to weigh the larvae.

      On that note... it reminds me of what I saw on another worm farming channel. I don't recall which channel it was... but they always launch their systems with the same exact amount (weight) of worms - then when some set period of time ends, they weigh the worms again to determine how much the population had grown over time. In your case I don't recall... were the worms weighed? And was it in the game plan to weight them at the end to see the delta??

      @@A-V I don't remember maybe Emily or Lilia? Yes worms were weighed. I'll have to weigh the castings and worms at the end.

      It was Da Kine Garden Stuff's channel. The video I was thinking about is this one: th-cam.com/video/DgTqONWUmrI/w-d-xo.html The way she explains it, a bin with approx 1 lb of worms is fed twice per week for a month - with each feeding consisting of 3 tablespoons of moistened chicken feed + dolomite lime + mosquito dunks. After a month the worms are sifted out & weighed again. She reports that typically their weight increases by 6 to 8 ounces - which seems like some serious growth

    I think moisture loss is evaporation

    Hi Ann, I'm voting for evaporation as the reason. I just wish I could evaporate my hips 🤣

    I’m not sure about weight, but I would guess 2.5 gallons (9.5L) of castings by the time you decide to harvest. Fun experiment!

    the bedding should have the most weight loss. they eat the bedding en this ends in castings wich contains moisture, if you close your bin with plastic, not so much moisture will lose

    I guess 98% is a water loss. I predict castings will be around 5%

    Moisture and evaporation are the number-one weight variables. The next is CO2 then a negligible amount of VOCs.
    The movements of a worm uses energy and they breath through their skin, taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide out.
    The food eaten is broken into carbon compounds, one of the most simple being glucose (C6H12O6). When that reacts with oxygen (O2) in the cells, it produces carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). C6H12O6 plus 6O2 gives 6CO2 plus 6H2O plus energy. We use the energy and the carbon dioxide is expelled as gas.
    Most people grasp that if they want to lose body fat, they need to exercise and it is said to 'burn-it-off' but in reality, only the energy was used, everything else is a byproduct. Fat is converted to carbon dioxide and water. You exhale the carbon dioxide and the water mixes into your circulation until it's lost as urine or sweat. If you lose 10kg of fat, precisely 8.4kg comes out through your lungs and the remaining 1.6kg turns into water. The same is for the worm.
    If the food rots, VOCs are more likely to exhaust but otherwise are consumed as fuel for the microbes, worms and other fauna.
    The only other thing off the top of my head that would contribute to weight loss is flies, escaping the bin with whatever they ate.

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hope it was not loss of flies that would be hard to track. Lol

  • @theunskoch4256
    @theunskoch4256 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I could be wrong but my guess would be about 10 kg's mayb 10.5 kg's roughly in that area, as for the loss in volume it could be that the cardbord is turning into castings, it could be evaporation, can't think of other factors

    I will say the most weight is lost by evaporation.

    I really admire your project. Like Charles Hesston said in "True Lies" a 1994 an American film. "Do you have any hard data?" It's a difficult project. Count the paper material among weights and measures with the food. Put in fudge factor for moisture. Log the temperature daily dew point. Call AV about spreadsheets! Minus some things out like egg shells. It's imputes Vs. outputs (castings). High science; and life going on! really cool.

    Will you harvest before a year, if need? Or wait? I guess I will say 13 lbs of castings. I think the water will fluctuate the weight more in the beginning but as the worms make more castings I think the moisture and weight will stay more stable. 😁🪱💩
    I really want to say 20lbs of castings.

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At sifting moisture it will be lower so hard to say.. I'll need to determine what percentage that really is.

  • @Vermicompost
    @Vermicompost 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think it was mostly moisture contributing to the loss of weight. My guess is you will have about 40 pounds of castings by the end of the year if you don't fill the whole thing up with castings before the year is up!! Very interesting experiment!!!🪱🪱🪱

      People ask how much "stuff" does it take to make 1 pound of castings. We shall see!!
