I strongly believe the GIA can determine origin of many minerals. Vincent Pardieu has for years, collected specimens and samples directly from many mines around the world for GIA's geo-chemical laboratories. He likes to go directly to the source to see it come out of the ground with his own eyes. This way he can verify whether it's a Primary or Secondary source of the mineral. You can see Vincent's videos on TH-cam on his channel called "Field Gemology by Vincent Pardieu". As well he's in many GIA TH-cam video. He's been pretty much everywhere where any valuable minerals (mostly gemstones) are being extracted. As such, I believe they have an extensive database of tested materials and can likely identify the general location if not the specific mine that a gem comes from.
Many people do not buy gemstones/jewellery with long-term investment in mind. For example, you have a nice diamond ring that one of the diamonds has gone missing. Sometimes the person is happy knowing that the man-made diamond is a genuine diamond in every way and will display all the same scintillation and are thus happy with man-made. Most of the people I know buy jewellery for it's beauty and sentimental meaning rather than for a long-term investment.
Lab diamonds will clearly take over... bought one myself and have zero interest in selling it. I bought it directly from the manufacturer so zero ethical issues and even had the cutter show me the stone straight after completion. D, excellent cut and perfect to the eye... easily 80k if looking for a natural and i paid no where close to that. Diamonds are not an investment... buy gold if your looking to invest.
Rubies, Sapphire and garnets are easy to find in Southern Ontario. The idea that they are rare is kind of silly. Maybe huge absolutely perfect ones. But that's not different than anything in life. Not just those gemstones though... moonstone, sunstone, labradorite, opals, most varieties of quartz, all the black stones, carmelian, agate, jaspers... I could go on forever. I just want people to realize we have more than we could ever need or want. Go find some. Legally and ethically of course.
I found carborundum from a bucket from n.carolina. some are star ruby some are star sapphire. I had the star ruby cut and cabbed. It came out to be 3 carats. Was my first stone cut. Very cool to see this channel

Rubies fluoresce under black light, as sapphires do. Wish you had mentioned this as well as demonstrated it. Also, I would have loved to have seen the Schiller effect of certain types of stones.

i found a agate in the rock drive way behind the shop at my work . i didnt know what it was at first but it looked cool an it had a soft sheen to it i looked up different types of rocks just to see what it was an to my surprise it as a agate ... its not very big maybe a half dollar coin size at best in a potatoish shape . i thought it was a cool find .

Just think, synthetic diamonds must be many times cheaper than natural. Pretty much the bulk of diamond dealers are now offering them. There will be little to no resale value. They must be close too free as to uproot an entire industry almost overnight.

They don't look like that when they come out of the ground. Well sorry on occasion they do. Usually they are covered in sediments or growing on or I side of a host rock. Basically they are everywhere. They just look like dull coloured normal stones that you are used to seeing everywhere. It's once they are washed and this stuff is removed that they look like the rocks that are shown as rough here. Learn the shapes of crystals and then you will recognise the patterns when you look at stones. Check out anywhere there is gravel as long as it's not illegal. Usually gravel is the discarded rock from mining and it's full of crystals. I think some people want this to be a secret. It's frustrating.. everyone who is interested should know you can find detailed these easily on your own. Look into the types of rock in your area and then what geological conditions are required to form the rock minerals that you are most interested in. Go to where that specific activity has happened and look down. You can't find every crystal everywhere... but most. Why? Because minerals are global.
