The Ohio State Penitentiary was abandoned in 1984. It was eventually torn down. The land is now occupied by Nationwide Arena and surrounding buildings.

My great uncle served more than one sentence there from the 1940s-1970s. He finally got his act together in the early 70s when the nicest and most gracious lady ever agreed to marry him. They were so ill matched it was insane, but they remained married for over 40 years til they each passed. I miss them both, but I especially miss his hilarious prison stories. He actually managed to escape from every prison he was ever in which were several. What a character he was!

I always found it to be a very handsome building, at least the front on W Spring St, and I felt it was a shame that it was demolished. So much of our history is destroyed in the name of progress. The other beautiful prison in Ohio is the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, which still exists as a museum. Mansfield was where the movie The Shawshank Redemption was filmed.

John Adam's and John Q. Adams are my two youngest daughters, I believe,5th and 4th great grandfathers on their late father's mother's mother's side as their great grandmother was indeed an Adams.
