    This year is the 800 anniversary of Austria's biggest medieval festival in Friesach, Carinthia called "Spectaculum". That is something else, you can only pay by converting your Euros into the local currency they used back then.

    Well Kufstein´s Medieval festival + their Medieval fortress is undoubtable very very dope but the by far dopest is the Medieval Festival at the fortress Burg Hochosterwitz in Carinthia (Kärnten) ..no joke, no exerggaration and an absolute must if you like such events and sceneries...
    just to give you a picture for he scenery = to get to the fortress Hochosterwitz located on a very steep high rock you have to pass 14 - yes 14 - fortified Gate towers on the way up to the fortress (or you take the for tourists built elevator on the backside and then pass the 14 gates on the way down after the visit of that huge fortress complex which I would recommend to do).

    Wow, guys. Y'all have taken us to the top of Germany, into cemeteries in Salzburg, and old monastic breweries, all of which we've thoroughly enjoyed. But this one...gotta say...made me most jealous. Perhaps it's because of my love for a "Ren Fest" that drive this feeling (suddenly, Ren Fests here in the the "free" state of Florida kinda in comparison 😜). What an incredible fortress. Keeping geeking-out, Ben, 'cause I'm with ya there--you can see the joy you had there written all over your face! Quick question: I know most places have their "exclusive" beers in and about Bavaria/Austria--was it the same for the festival? What was the beer you were drinking? (as you might can tell...lol...I'm quite looking forward to the beers when we manage to skip across the pond to Munich one day!) Keep the great videos coming. Looking forward to the next...wherever that might be!

      Thanks so much for watching so many of our videos. We had a great time at the festival. The local beer I have seen the most in this area and featured in the beer garden in this video is Auerbräu Rosenheim! Hope you have a wonderful time!

    That festival looks amazing! I visited Kufstein in 2018 and really enjoyed the fortress and its museum. The awning is new since my visit though! Did you also hear the organ playing? Personally though, I don't think Kufstein is otherwise that incredible. The very old street is fascinating to stroll around, but (at least when I visited - maybe it's changed!) on the city's list of the top 5 attractions were 1. The Fortress 2. The Fortress Organ 3. The main old street 4. The town hall 5. A shopping mall. If you do make a video about the place, I would love to see you change my mind and find other places for me to go when I'm in the Tirol again in December, but otherwise, maybe a day-trip...

    • @NearFromHome
      @NearFromHome  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We haven't even heard about the organ. We will feature it when we eventually return.
      I agree the city is quite small, and doesn't have much going on, butttttt I think it's a great jumping off point for hiking. The Kaisertal is beautiful.

    You guys are me and my girlfriend’s favorite euro travel channel! We love that your videos are experiences and travel centered unlike a lot of TH-camrs out there that just make it about themselves. Did you guys get a new camera?

    • @NearFromHome
      @NearFromHome  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah! I’m still not great with it, but we’ve upgraded our camera somewhat recently. Frankly, I really do appreciate your comment. The goal and thesis of the channel has always been to help people get out there and find new things to explore, not to wax on about ourselves or our story. It’s about travel! Even if that typically leads to much much slower growth. So to have someone pickup on that theme and appreciate it, you’ve honestly made our day :)

    Nice video guys but me personally I'm not that enthusiastic about this particular festival. I've been there years ago and it was okay, but not in my eyes not great either. The castle itself is pretty amazing but the festival to me is too comercialized. Also the really interesting parts, like the camp of the groups is kinda locked up.
    If you like this kind of event, which you obviously do, try the Burgfest in Karpun. It's also on a historic castle, but one that is not as impressive as the one in Kufstein. I also think food is not as good there, but pretty okay.
    But there are two things that make Kaprun really cool in my eyes. First there is sports event taking place where there is real close combat fighting. It's called Buhurt or medieval armored full contact combat. The second thing is the camp, which is completely open. You can walk through there, look at what the people there are doing and talk to them. Most of them are really nice and friendly, will answer your questions and some even let you try armour and weaponry.

    • @NearFromHome
      @NearFromHome  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for the suggestion! This is only our second medieval festival like this, so it's great to hear other opinions. I am looking at the festival site, and it looks awesome. We have a free day that weekend, so we might go, but it does look a little far from Munich.

      Lol you know, I never thought about that. They are so common in the US, I just assumed they are here as well, even though I've never seen one after five years of living in the area. haha

      I was also a bit confused. There are cockroaches in Austria (Küchenschabe, Waldschabe etc) but the ones in the video seem to be Madagascar hissing cockroaches which are not endemic to Austria and are probably store bought

    Hey Guys! I see you're back to Austria. If you guys are a bit into this stuff, from what i saw, i highly recommend a tour along the danube, through the beaultiful "Wachau" that streches from vienna troughout hole Lower Austria, where you will see more castles than you can digest (also they're more "anarchistic robbery fortesses" on steep mountain tops, looking really evil, because they robbed the Habsburgs and other rulers transports per ship along the danube to Vienna). Oh, and while you're in Vienna - Vienna is known for it's morbid sence of humor, gothic metal, aso, aso - i'm sure you will find great stuff regardiiing to your fetishes there (for example one of the biggest and by far most important cementary in the world with lots of gigantic names lying there and it's also the coolest imho :))

    • @NearFromHome
      @NearFromHome  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, we have been wanting to do this! However, we are thinking about doing a bike/cruise along the Danube. :O Glad to hear that it is recommended.
      We also plan to make video on Vienna at some point, but haven't heard about their cemetery. We will definitely check that out once we make it over there! Thanks!

    • @andreashofer4442
      @andreashofer4442 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NearFromHome It's the "Zentralfriedhof" and the bike tour is the absolute perfect way to experience the danube along the Wachau, it's castles and "Wein-Heurigen", where the farmers sell their own wine and farm products up in the wine hills. They are great and the cost of the foods is laughable for their quality! (don't mix them up with the Heurigen near Vienna, they are more touristic and fancy and fake, because they don't sell their own products and are really expensive!)
      PS: I'm living in Vienna and "Scheibbs", in the beautiful Erlauftal. So if you wanna take a break from going along the Danube and wanna see some more mountains, going along a beautiful mountain river you can drink from, go swimming and camp there (without any legal consequences - we allow it under the radar in Erlauftal), and of course see some more castles, ruins and great buildings, like Scheibbs, what's one of the very oldest cities, the "Kartause in Gaming" and the "Türkensturz" (Turk-fall??), where the turkish attackers were led over a cliff by the last defender who sacrificed himself.... then just go these 20km into the mountains at Ybbs/Persenbeug, towards the "Ötscher", along the Erlauftal. You will propably also make local friends there, because camping on a nice spot along the Erlauf is a must for us, everytime it's warm👌There is also a lot to discover if you wanna go further in the mointains until Steirmark. (IMHO the Erlauftal, Erlaufsee and hole Styria are some of the most underrated places in Austria)✌

    • @cookiesareakatherinefood
      @cookiesareakatherinefood ปีที่แล้ว

      Many of them do, particularly the younger ones (although they will often apologise for their poor language skills, and then speak it almost faultlessly). How to get there depends where you're coming from. You can do a direct train from Munich or one from Innsbruck.

    • @NearFromHome
