This was so fun! I'm so glad you loved Sylvia's Lovers! Elizabeth Gaskell is amazing. You definitely sold me on Jezebel’s Daughter. I'm going to read that asap.
So lovely to hear about your amazing reading month, Miriam! I'm sooo excited you loved Sylvia's Lovers! I just adored it so much when I read it. Instantly put a hold on that Jaime Jo Wright!
I really want to read that JJW as well as her two most recent ones. I'm really behind on her books. So fun to hear your thoughts on Sylvia's Lovers. You described everything so beautifully!
You've made me so excited to pick up Sylvia's Lovers! I've been going back and forth about putting it on my list for 2025, but now it's definitely going on!
Dear Miriam….everything you said about Premonition at Withers Farm was so on point. I finished it about two months ago and still think about what a compelling read it was. I, too, read parts before I went to sleep and was always stressing when Perliette went out at night on a medical errand!
Great wrap-up! I read Sylvia's Lovers in September and loved it as well. I highlighted that same passage about Phillip and his prayers. I felt so bad for Hester.
Ooh, I can’t wait to read Jezebels Daughter. I read The Woman in White several months back, loved it, and have been wanting to read some more of Wilkie Collin’s writings. Victorian era books are my favorite, so this video was perfect!
That Jaime Jo Wright book was my first book of hers to read and it’s still my favorite after reading them all. I loved the characters from the past timeline so much.
I read North and South for the first time this Victober and I loved it so much that Elizabeth Gaskell is going to be my female author of the year next year. I just my copy of Sylvia’s Lovers yesterday and now I’m so excited to read it! Thanks for your thoughts on all the books!
You have almost sold me on trying a Gaskell book. I am on the fence because I know, or at least I think I know, how much so admired and loved George Eliot's works and I did NOT enjoy Middlemarch last year.
I’ve only read Silas Marner by Eliot and didn’t like it, I’m nervous to try Middlemarch, I do think Gaskell is very different from Eliot in her writing! And she writes such compelling and complex characters, I can’t help but adore her!
@miriamelizabethreads We had to read Silas in high school, and I vehemently disliked it. Any recommendations on where to start with Gaskell? Middlemarch for me was just an overly long, rambling story with a plot and characters I could not connect with.
@ It’s so hard to say, each of her books are so different! I know most people recommend starting with North and South as it’s more balanced in terms of pacing, characterization, etc. I think it’s amazing! Ruth is tragic and a lot more melancholic but I adored it - it’s similar to Tess of the D’Urbervilles. I probably wouldn’t start with Sylvia’s Lovers.
That’s a hard one! North and South is often recommended as the first to try and I would agree - it’s definitely on the melancholic side but there are some moments that feel Austen-esque although I disagree that it’s like Pride and Prejudice… Ruth is super sad and reminds me a lot of Tess of the D’Urbervilles so if you’ve read and enjoyed Tess then maybe Ruth is a good place to start. Cranford doesn’t have much of a plot but it’s short, cozy, and beautifully written!

SL was just beautiful! Heartbreaking but beautiful! I hope you enjoy Premonition at Withers Farm!
"Slimy" is being kind to Crosbie 🤣 I loved the way Mrs Dale and the Squire resolved their differences by the end of the novel.
😂😂😂 He was something else!! And yes I loved that as well!
Coffee DOES make anything and everything better!!
😄☕️
I really enjoyed The Premonition at Wither's Farm! I think it's my favorite Jaime Jo book so far.
The consolation for Victober ending is that it is almost time to break out everything Christmas! 🎄
YES!! Just decorated my bookshelves for Christmas 😅😅

Yesss so compelling!

I felt for Hester too! 😢
I'm glad you loved Sylvia's Lovers. I really want to read it. I'm reading The Moorland Cottage by her right now and enjoying it. 😊
I’ve heard great things about The Moorland Cottage!
I’ve never read The Old Nurse’s Story. That sounds good!

I love all things Victorian era too! Yessss! I loved it so much I don’t know if I will love any of her other books as much! 😅
Love The Old Nurse's Story! And looking forward to more Gaskell!
❤

I’m so glad you loved North and South! I hope you love SL! ❤️ it’s quite different in tone but just as masterful as North and South!
I love Elizabeth Gaskell but haven’t read Sylvia’s Lovers yet, thanks for recommending. And yes, you are going to love Wives and Daughters 😊
I’m so looking forward to it!
A snow storm and a manor house, say less!

I didn't love Middlemarch, either, but I love Gaskell!
I struggled with Middlemarch and love Gaskell.

@@miriamelizabethreads thank you for the recommendations. I look forward to checking out her writing!
Wormwood Abbey sounds fantastic, except for an irritating main character 😊
