I’m starting to finally get it…how to use all of what’s available on the farm (repurpose those grass clippings, used wood chips, etc.) Such a great idea with the chicken coop and your garden assistant looked like he was thoroughly into helping and learning from Dad!
I have a yard sweeper that you pull behind your mower to pick up the grass clippings and it is incredible for a compost pile. They are not expensive at all, you should look at getting one. Have the boys ride around after mowing and then just dump on the compost pile. Great channel thanks for sharing your lives.
Ben, don't give up on growing wheat. Once you harvest your flour corn this fall, that would be the ideal time to sow winter wheat in that plot. Just an idea. Love your channel.

Don't stop planting is my motto this year. I've pulled out all the vegetables that have produced all they can produce, snatched up some of the weeds as well. Re- amended the beds, and replanted more seeds, and potato seeds. Time to keep on keeping on with food for our family. Also need to kill off ants. Out comes the black pepper!!! Time to sprinkle pepper throughout the plants, one of the locals at a nursery suggest black pepper on the plants with ants. I hope it works!!! Going to order me some of the amendments Black Lake Organics. Life is good!!
I am doing the same thing snapping beans, and we had the long beans and new potatoes for supper! You young people are an inspiration. We have that wonderful red soil also!!

I can’t believe the way that young man backed that trailer up. I have a lawn tractor and a small wagon that was my father’s and when I get it close to where I want it I shut the tractor down, unhook the wagon and really put it in the proper place because I just decided it wasn’t worth learning my age. Lol
I looked up the #11 Cascadia Gold that you're using and it looks pretty interesting...thanks for sharing. The compost pile in the chicken yard is brilliant and no there's never enough homemade compost. 🙃

I love the way your children are involved, and they look like they are having a blast! I wish we would have found this lifestyle while our kids were still young.
For mud season, other interesting weather days, or when we didn't really want to let the chickens out (season where the wildcat was closer to the house as she moved around her territory), the chicken house stayed filled as much as possible with every bit of leaves I could acquire. Neighborhood on the way home from town didn't mind an early morning fall bagged leaf thief, not sure if that's something which is generally ok. Then any trimmings, stalks, straw, old hay, and all extra greenery/scraps/weeds plus bugs/grubs. Wood chips would help here too. They would mix and fluff that, and we just kept adding as much as possible, as often as possible. Filling one side, then adding new stuff only to the other side for a number of months. As needed we'd pull compost from the side we weren't adding to, or pull that entire half out. Provided there was anything coming in to replace what we removed. The non-chicken compost was moldy, mildewed things, old clothing (buttons removed), spiral schooling workbooks and other such where we needed to retrieve largish metal items later. Like zippers. Rounded out by small animal bedding, shredded paper/cardboards, the emptied kinda-like-bokashi buckets of everything yuck that wasn't fit for chickens. Even that pile also produced good compost!
I’m going to do this in my chicken yard! We have a 30x20 foot yard. This is an awesome idea! Of course we don’t have wood chips but we have bedding from the chicken house and yard and garden waste, also food scraps. We even have some 2 foot fence! My project for tomorrow! You are doing a great job of raising stuff, most notably some fine sons. They work so hard, plus that is an awesome job of backing a trailer for a young guy. I am impressed! As to the volume of your pile. I love the concept of the chicken tractor on steroids that is taught at Perma Pastures Farm. I will love to see how your adaptation works out. By the way, if your radius is 2 1/2 feet then the area of your circle is 19.6 square feet and at 2 feet high the volume of your pile is 1.45 yards

Perhaps plant some annual and perennial herbs/garlic around their coop so they can peck at them as they grow near the fence. I have a grape vine hanging over mine. They LOVE raisins that drop over the winter. I also put year old woodchips in the coop every week. They LOVE the centipedes and wood lice. I do have a board about a foot high around the coop so their scratching doesn’t throw compost making material out the coop. I also have a board lying flat in the coop that I move weekly. Underneath are worms that’s an extra treat.
Ben you and Meg have search young little man they are so capable of running a farm that mess men are capable of doing themselves not only can I run a farm they are so well behaved and kind. You too must be so proud the two of you have done incredible job with your incredible children!
Don't listen to the black locust haters - we moved into this house over 30 years ago, and the woods across the driveway are full of them. They smell soooo good when they bloom, and have never become invasive in our yard unless I let them - I babied one spindley one all these years that's actually in our back yard treeline. Hubs wanted to cut it dozens of time and I said no, it's the only one close enough (and short enough!) for me to walk right out and pull down a white flower clump every spring and smell that wonderful smell up close. Sort of honeysuckle-hyacinth-lilac sweet kind of smell. Well worth a few thorns. :D

Wow what a climate where you can start squash from seed this late. How wonderful! I have to start them in pots inside in the middle of winter to have a chance of harvest before the frost returns and kills them.

I love your videos. Just a thought Ben- I've had chickens for over 20 years, and I have had a compost pile in the chicken pen throughout that time. I think you are amazingly clever, but I am a bit worried about your chickens hurting themselves on the wire mesh around your compost pile. I have used two alternatives over the years, both of which have been successful. Firstly, I used wooden pallets as walls on 3 sides, with a low plank of wood across the front, so that they can't scratch all the compost out, but can easily get in. The second, I just used hay bales as walls on three sides (one to two bales high). They both worked well, but we don't get nearly the amount of rainfall as you do (South Australia), so the bales may not be such a good option for you (ie too soggy, too quickly). I didn't worry about the compost getting into the chook yard. Our chickens did free range across our half acre block, but did also spend quite a bit of time just in the pen (which was about the same size as yours). After 20 years, we had the most magnificent compost throughout the whole chook pen. It never got compacted, but we only had 12 bantam chickens or 4 large chickens, at at time. We also used sawdust in the sleeping aviary, and that made magnificent compost. We added it to the compost pile every 6 months. It never got smelly.
I'm sure hoping that the chickens will help you make compost Ben. What you did reminds me of the pallet compost bins you used to do. Nice black locust tree that you found. Nice amendments and planting winter squash sounds like an excellent idea where the wheat didn't grow. Looks like a bunch of squash plants. Nice idea of the divots so the water will go toward the seed. Thanks for this Hollars.

I want to say they were cowpeas, but not sure. Nice to put the compost in the chicken pen. I think the other compost would have worked if you had stopped watering when it started cooking. Maybe if you had covered it for more heat? More grass cutting and landscape cloth for me today. It’s not work if you’re having fun! 🤗

I have a whole fence line of black locust trees. It’s the primary shade in my yard. They propagate all over my yard. Constantly pulling them up. It’s a city yard. Lol
Good compost is gold nowadays, good plan letting your chickens earn their keep. And I’m in zone 6b and I just planted some 58 day blue lake green beans today, plenty of time left for those - they’ll be good eating in September!

They even soak their grain and put rings of hardware cloth in the pens and pan the seeds and let them sprout then let the chickens at em. They are in upstate NY. Wow what a climate where you can start squash from seed this late. How wonderful! I have to start them in pots inside in the middle of winter to have a chance of harvest before the frost returns and kills them.

I love your videos. Just a thought Ben- I've had chickens for over 20 years, and I have had a compost pile in the chicken pen throughout that time. I think you are amazingly clever, but I am a bit worried about your chickens hurting themselves on the wire mesh around your compost pile. I have used two alternatives over the years, both of which have been successful. Firstly, I used wooden pallets as walls on 3 sides, with a low plank of wood across the front, so that they can't scratch all the compost out, but can easily get in. The second, I just used hay bales as walls on three sides (one to two bales high). They both worked well, but we don't get nearly the amount of rainfall as you do (South Australia), so the bales may not be such a good option for you (ie too soggy, too quickly). I didn't worry about the compost getting into the chook yard. Our chickens did free range across our half acre block, but did also spend quite a bit of time just in the pen (which was about the same size as yours). After 20 years, we had the most magnificent compost throughout the whole chook pen. It never got compacted, but we only had 12 bantam chickens or 4 large chickens, at at time. We also used sawdust in the sleeping aviary, and that made magnificent compost. We added it to the compost pile every 6 months. It never got smelly.
I'm sure hoping that the chickens will help you make compost Ben. What you did reminds me of the pallet compost bins you used to do. Nice black locust tree that you found. Nice amendments and planting winter squash sounds like an excellent idea where the wheat didn't grow. Looks like a bunch of squash plants. Nice idea of the divots so the water will go toward the seed. Thanks for this Hollars.

Ben, I used to grow Acres of squash on our commercial vegetable farm. If you like Table King, try Table Ace. They are a very productive semi- bush type acorn squash. And tell Corbin great job on backing up that trailer!

Hi 👋🏻 Sister, and Holler family! The kids need to shell some purple hull peas so their thumbs will be purple lol. As older adults, that’s what we remembered most…fun memories! I want to say they were cowpeas, but not sure. Nice to put the compost in the chicken pen. I think the other compost would have worked if you had stopped watering when it started cooking. Maybe if you had covered it for more heat? More grass cutting and landscape cloth for me today. It’s not work if you’re having fun! 🤗
What about tilling up the chicken yard and planting something that they will eat when you put your fence back up for them? 🤔 That will save on feed for them for awhile 😉. Corn, wheat, rye..

I have a whole fence line of black locust trees. It’s the primary shade in my yard. They propagate all over my yard. Constantly pulling them up. It’s a city yard. Lol
Good compost is gold nowadays, good plan letting your chickens earn their keep. And I’m in zone 6b and I just planted some 58 day blue lake green beans today, plenty of time left for those - they’ll be good eating in September!

Hi Guys, Just watched your latest blog on friday!! I am an absolute butter when it comes to composting and wanted to tell you of another channel you might enjoy if you haven’t already. Edible Acres. He and his wife are a little out there but in the very best way. Watch his chicken composting scheme. They even soak their grain and put rings of hardware cloth in the pens and pan the seeds and let them sprout then let the chickens at em. They are in upstate NY. You will enjoy and get many new creative ideas. Take care! Love your channel and your family
