  • Divorce Iranian Style
A film by Kim Longinotto and Ziba Mir-Hosseini
    England, 1998, 80 minutes, Color, 16mm/DVD
Hilarious, tragic, stirring, this fly-on-the-wall look at several weeks in an Iranian divorce court provides a unique window into the intimate circumstances of Iranian women’s lives. Following Jamileh, whose husband beats her; Ziba, a 16-year-old trying to divorce her 38-year-old husband; and Maryam, who is desperately fighting to gain custody of her daughters, this deadpan chronicle showcases the strength, ingenuity, and guile with which they confront biased laws, a Kafaka-esque administrative system, and their husbands’ and families’ rage to gain divorces.

I’m Muslim, I never seek permission but I’ve always told them where I’m going. I don’t even think majority of Muslim women seek permission explicitly, the husband just knows what’s up. But then it depends on family

Interesting. I was in the middle of divorce 30 years ago in America and I experienced similar treatment when I sought religious counsel with my husband at that time. It was assumed that there was something I could have done to turn the situation around. I felt they were saying it was my fault that my husband no longer wanted to be married to me. Thirty years later I realize that marriage is not as much a right as a responsibility based on the choice made to enter the covenant relationship.. MARRIAGE IS BOTH CULTURALY AND RELIGIUOSLY DEFINED, We need more teaching on how to keep the covenant of marriage.....WHATEVER IT IS UNDERSTOOD TO INVOLVE.

"You must make yourself attractive" wtf? well he's not that handsome either even if she was cheating on him I would blame her, and what if she would have been the one filing for divorce? would the judge have told him, "YOU MUST MAKE YOUR SELF HANDSOME AND GROW HAIR?" I mean if it's based on looks I think it would be fair.

I thought this was an excellent documentary. Great camera work and sequencing of the information. I also just like gathering information and am slow to make judgement. In a way I think the West could learn something from the court procedure. This court was much more right brained - everyone was free to express themselves and change their minds - very different to the left brained courts in the West.

It is so sad to see descendents of Ancient Persians end up in this extreme conservatism. Persians were open, innovative and civilised, inspiring East Asia with its gorgeous music and dance, art and religion. Hope one day, Iranians can stand up on its own feet following Persian Heritage, not soly Arab or Islamic. I would like to see in my life the renaissance of Persian Culture~!

You are absolutely right. The Iranian people are a great people with an ancient and valuable culture. The women are brave, getting braver, and the men are keeping a low profile, because it is good for men, let's face it.

Gosh, don't these people see that everyone could look beautiful and they need to stand up for their rights? How sad these women are so brainwashed, into thinking beauty is wrong, or trying to make ones self appear good is okay!

They don’t or didn’t have much of a choice though did they?! And these women do beautify themselves with makeup and fashion but it’s done at weddings, at home, at family events, not for random men on the street or a court!!! Although nowadays the younger generation of Iranian women ate more likely to get surgery done and go out with load of makeup and fashionable style and try and get away with the dress code as much as they can!

Oh, I don't know, a lot of it is not just the Qur'an, but also interpretations of the Hadith. The attitudes to women comes from this.

Im a Muslim, and it sort of is though… I think this is the closest to Islamic law than most muslim countries. I must be the only one who doesn’t find it extreme at all 😭
