How to make wire spirals - step by step beginner tutorial

- Let me show you how to create wire spirals... perfect for your jewellery pieces. Easy to follow beginner friendly tutorial. You can make them in various sizes, with various guage wires, and various materials, such as copper, craft wire, and aluminium wire.
Equipment needed:
Wire (either copper, craft wire, or aluminium, silver etc)
Flush cutters
Round nose pliers, or six-step bail making pliers
Chain nose pliers
Ruler

hi Samantha! thank you for the tutorial. I was so happy my first spiral turned out pretty good, even and flat. I made it with Benecreat 0.8 mm permanetly coloured wire. Copper I think. But then I messed it up when I hammered it.... perhaps because I don't have the proper tools, I used the rubber handle part of my cutters with mouse mat under. Oh well, for a first try I suppose its fine.
You’re so very welcome! 🙏 I’m thinking the issue could have been that I think the Benecreat wire can be on the softer side, so maybe your hammering was a little heavy for it? Just a thought. You can bash copper pretty heavily (which is good for the soul lol). As you progress, you can invest in a relatively inexpensive chasing hammer and block, which you’ll find much easier to use. I’m really happy you made your first spiral! Aren’t they fab!!? You’ll make so many from here on out and use them for all sorts of jewellery pieces 🌀 ❤️

Absolutely 💯 If you don’t want the flattened look, than hammering with a nylon hammer will keep the shape, whilst work hardening the spirals ☺️
Great video, excellent tutorial. Would it be possible to insert a smallish bead in the center of the spiral? Have you tried it? Just curious.
You absolutely can! I’d suggest using a lighter gauge wire if you choose to, as 1) the heavier gauge wires tend not to fit through bead holes, and 2) a lighter gauge is less likely to damage or crack your bead as you’re creating your spirals 🥰

In the tutorial, I use aluminium wire. 1.2mm or 16g. For the copper wire spirals, I use dead soft in 1mm (18g) and 1.25mm (approx 16g). The principle is the same for any gauge wire, but the dead soft is easier to manipulate. Hope that helps ☺️

Hi Samantha, can I ask a question? The wire I currently have is plated and tarnish resistant. I've only just learned that the tarnish resistance is due to some kind of polymer coating. I think this wire will be ok for wrapping but it doesn't look great after being worked with a hammer. I think hammering may damage the integrity of the wire. Do you have an opinion on this ?? Thanks.
Hi Susan. Although I’m no expert, I would say that you’re quite correct, in that, hammering coated wire is a no go, really. The coating gets damaged and it leaves the wire susceptible to tarnish. This leaves some parts untarnished and others tarnished, which doesn’t look good.

Can you help me with gauges? I am only familiar with gauges. I went to order some from Scientific and I am completly confused. They do offer a conversion sheet, bu still confused. The copper wire used on your video of wire wrapped beads with copper wire, what gauge of wire is used and how do I find it on their web site. Small quantities not commercial ? Can you help me?
Of course! I’ll try and help as much as I can. What can I help you with? Do you mean the tutorial with the 6mm beads where the wire is wrapped over the bead?
Ah ok I saw your other comment on that video. So if you look in the description box you’ll see I give you the gauge equivalents to the mm measurements of the wire you can use. You can use 20, 21, or 22 gauge wire for these links. You don’t have to purchase from scientific wire, but from any local craft store or large online retailers. And this way, you can purchase in much smaller amounts. Have a look at your local craft store. Are you US?
