I first saw him playing in a high school gym in California in 1964, He was singing alone with a guitar and harmonica. That night changed my life forever. One year later he was playing packed auditoriums and transforming music and pop culture. I loved it when he went electric and had a band. On December 17, 1965 I brought him an oil painting I had done of him. I got to the show early and watched him and The Band do a short warm up session before the show. I was the only person in the hall, sitting front row, center seat as they serenaded me. Earlier that day I had run away from an angry Marine Sargent who was trying to shanghai me into the Vietnam War. That's another day I'll never forget. Love him or hate him you have to respect his fearless integrity to his musical muse. His folk fans wanted to keep him in a box. True artist's don't fit in boxes... they break them to get out.
I first saw Bob Dylan at "The Rave" Eagles club in Milwaukee WI in the 90's. It was a small venue maybe a 2 thousand people. We were so close we could nearly smell his aftershave. He closed out the show with Highway 61 Revisited and the whole building shook from the dancing that was going on, what gave me hope for the future was the diverse age of people there, lots of teenagers, young and old!! I have seen him a couple more times since but none have topped that show. My Mom saw Dylan in SF and was sitting behind Joan Baez in a similar setup, it was very cool because I felt like I was there with her. One of my favorites!!
what a pleasure to hear him drone on endlessly, and not one obnoxious high pitch "WOOOOO" sound coming from the quiet and respectful audience. just polite applause and some random heckling at times. audiences today really suck!
This gig was performed the same evening after partying all night with John Lennon and filming the infamous "taxi" scene at 7am the same morning where he's very messed up and trying not to throw up in the cab. He must have crashed out in his hotel room for a few hours before getting sober enough to stand up and do this performance.
Lennon talked about it in an interview from 1980 saying Dylan was throwing up in the hotel lobby (which they were driving to) hence why he was hoping he wouldn't "get sick" in the taxi scene.
Please note that in his music he doesn't miss a bar, a phrase, a counter point, a name or a word. He knows exactly what he's doing. Then he's having fun performing stoned out of his mind between the songs. That's OK as long as the music is great.
True, but so did Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode) in the Devotional tour, despite having a massive drug problem. I think Bob was on a pretty dark road at this point despite being cool AF
@@_ljcarlton he probably is on some drugs, but I don't think it was only or even mainly the drugs which made him talk the way he did. He seems to have made it pretty clear at the beginning when he was drawling that he doesn't know how to write a drug song: all of this seems to be all highly ironic.
Damn. This is pretty tough to hear. I didn't realise Dylan was so gone by this point. Sounds totally frazzled and smacked out. I'm guessing he started using to take the edge off all the speed he was on just to keep going. On top of alcohol, mary jane, ten thousand cigarettes and god knows what else. Thankfully he didn't become another casualty and is still with us today! God bless you Bob x
@Zepster77 I agree. It is amazing why so many people are so quick to criticize. They are like toads, eager to jump into murky water. Thanks Zepster. ❤
Oh my goodness, I was there and have always remembered that bit about the word Rubbish which was actually a snappy and funny response to a heckler who shouted "Rubbish!". He was, though, clearly out of it and sometimes seemed to have trouble standing up. He also made a bit of an idiot of himself when he tried to play drums! I don't remember him going on for so long so at any particular point so I think various bits of talk have been edited together. I agree with another commentator that the speed has been slowed down (why?)and is prob more accurate when played at 1.25.
Well, he sure did introduce the "hawks" to all the great tradition of american music summoning them all up in Woo dstock, Levon included; made them obtain such self sense as a group that they became " THE Band" and inspired to them 2 of the most seminal records in rock; moreover paid to Mick one year and a half of salary cos he let him down by retreating after this gruelling tour, that nearly killed him creatively and phisically - I think it can be deemed grateful enough?!?
I’ve seen him live twice in 2024 alone and I haven’t actually heard him speak a single word 😂 (besides briefly introducing the band and the occasional “thank you” in between songs)
My sweet Lord, don't anybody who's trying to stay on the wagon listen to this, they gonna fall right off; Jesus help, he was intoxicating in that period, and frankly, too hot to touch
I think he was being a great actor! Why? Because he nailed every song and every word. Confused the audience for sure. If he was messed up, I'll have what he was on please!
brains are full of various bio Chemicals that are balanced 😮 can't know what was going on back then at this royal Albert concert or come to any factual conclusions about bob dylan but ❤the songs ❤
Booed for months on end and still selling out every night.....um ya I'd be a little bitter........for gods sake if you dont like the guy...dont buy tickets. Very puzzling
Glassy eyes, drawling diction, rolling stance like a bobbing boat all pretty typical of someone smacked out. Cf. Clip in the back of the limo with Lennon on the same tour - looks like a dirty hit.
@@dice1296 of course it is a judgement she is making, inferring he had shot smack! After all this time who cares anyway? Master songwriter if nothing at all else. What has she done?
A lot of speed and marijuana...but I also think part of it is an act. Imagine being super drunk or strung out and remembering all those lyrics without notes. Right when he starts singing, he doesn't sound as slurry or drunk. Marijuana high, sure; buzzed, likely. Heroin, I don't buy. That's always been a rumor, a rumor without evidence. I also think he was tired. The tour really took a toll on him physically and mentally--he was married, with children at home: Jesse had just been born. People forget how much of a 'family' guy he actually was and (likely) still is.
@@chrisyeomans5547 must be 30 years ago, but I got my hands on several bootleg from that tour. The audio on my cassettes seems the Same as this audio. Of course it's possible that the original recording of the bootleg was slowed down, but I doubt CBS would not have corrected when they released their own bootleg series
Its been slowed down, the video. Played at 1.5 speed it sounds fine and Dylan does not sound "out of it." He´s actually quite funny and nice in this. It sounds terrible at normal speed.
Stoned....for the same reason everybody gets stoned. But it is disrespectful to people who paid to see him. He needn't explain anything - just play. When you're high - you think your Bob Dylan! So did he.

Very high, amazing he can perform
I love how he uses the North of England accent to say ‘rubbish’ and he did a mighty good job.
bloke🙂
Authenticity of intention should be respected like genius. Hecklers have no hold over a divine gift. You are the best Bobbie "La noblesse oblige".

love it
PS None of the above takes an atom away from the superb, innovative music he produced on that tour.
He was just born to be. Bobby Dylan. Untouchable ....😎
Correct. It ADDS to it.
This video should be called Bob Dylan speaking whilst fucked up. Great video.

Hello Miles, thanks for that insight. Just to say that the sound isn't slowed down. The video is, but not the sound
More like 1.5 or 1.75 but the speed here seems to vary.
Holy shit, you were there!!!!! How was the concert. I saw him cleveland, ohio on november 12, 1965. Please text back to me.
He's on so much speed. high AF.
interesting to see he actually did introduce the Hawks at least once on that tour!

I’m not so sure that’s so. Can you cite examples?

I believe that’s called heroin and speed
@Paul: Idk, you sure you want heroin?
Bob Dylan 1966 was other worldly, he crept onto stage like a spider and spun a web of confusion.
Love bob
"It just means nothing!"
Never heard before never heard him so stoned?
Saw him I believe it was next time he was in RAH 2013. But he'd never appreciate what that took (out of me).

It’s not a drug song, even if I am at this moment

A lot of difference in a year

He took a lot of amphetamines during this period and I remember reading a few times he was stung out on heroin towards the end of the tour
