  • Grafting on Paw Paw Suckers shows how we take excess SCION wood and graft it onto paw paw suckers that we have growing in the yard. Below are some of the Amazon links to the supplies that we use.

Great video! Awesome explanation on how to graft with some relaxing bird sounds in the background.

Thanks so much for the kind words! I'll have a grafting 101 video coming out later this summer.

Hello my friend! We will be selling paw paw seedlings at the Paw Paw, WV festival this year. Neal Peterson and I will be speaking about Paw Paws throughout the day at this festival. It will be a small festival, but will hopefully be good.

I have a 7-8 year old pawpaw that I grew from seed that flowers profusely. There are no other mature pawpaw anywhere nearby. I hand pollinated from it's own flowers (though I was told they aren't self-fertile) and have a few fruit, but could I graft some of the second year pawpaw seedlings on the large tree as branches to get pollination?

You can graft onto older and larger trees. It is just a little difficult to make sure you don't trim the grafts off if you prune. Second year seedlings grafted on your older tree would likely not flower for a 3 to 5 years. You would probably do better to find someone (or in the wood) who has a tree that is already flowering. Grab a couple of pieces of that wood (first year wood off of the flowering plant) in January or February and put it in a plastic bag and put it in the refrigerator. Then graft when your 7-8 year old tree has started leafing out. The scion wood that was already flowering on the original tree could flower as soon as the following year.

@@greatescapefarms Thank you. I will try to find one. I'm in northern Ohio and grew up "in the woods" and have never seen a wild pawpaw. I have scoured the woods as an adult and can't locate any, but I did hear about someone having them in the next county so they do exist out there.

@@brooke6846 Ohio (southern) has the largest paw paw festival in the world. I would think they are all over the place in most of the state. You may want to try some of the facebook groups if you are into facebook. Try: Pawpaw Fanatics or Pawpaw Fanclub International

Where are you fetting your scionwood?

My largest order was from Englands Orchard. Some of the more unusual scion came from Red Fern Farm. I also got some from Peaceful Heritage, Cricket Hill, Fruitwood Nursery, and Walker Pawpaw Budwood. You should be able to locate all of them via google. If not, let me know and I'll get you contact info.

@@greatescapefarms never heard of walker. I spoke with Mr England and he said he didn't have any kaki varieties. I believe the other three I just had limited supply. I will check again though. thank you very much
