helveteca I began sewing about 2 months ago. Since I started, I have sewn my granddaughter 4 or 5 dresses, 3 tops, a couple of shorts, pillows, purses, and bags. I HATE taping patterns together, and I have a wide format printer, so I have been trying to learn about digitized patterns and how to work with them. I downloaded illustrator last night, and I just finished printing my 1st one. It ended up being about 1/8 off, so I gotta go back to the old drawing board. I’m very interested in all aspects of digital patterns, especially the grading and printing aspects. Any info you can share, would not be wasted by me! 😁
Mony2489 thank you for the reply! It is definitely hard to get the first patterns accurate, because if you don’t hold the camera at an exact perpendicular angle to the pattern, any slight tilt will distort. It takes practice. I will see what I can do

Hello, my MacBook died years ago! iPads can’t download adobe illustrator so I haven’t had the opportunity to screen film since the MacBooks been gone. I’m really hoping I get a Mac or MacBook again soon but iPad Pro has been doing everything now for me. I will definitely think about what I can do though

Hi, my blocks I do add seam allowance, just a personal preference (a bad habit I picked up years ago) but you’re supposed to do it without SA and and it later. It just depends on how I drafted the pattern.

I am actually using Adobe Photoshop Elements for Windows XP so it's a little bit of an antique with a lot of limitations - not nearly the capabilities of the Illustrator. I think I can make the patterns walk if I paste one into the other as an "object" and try to freehand rotate it. Have to see if I can keep setting a new point for walking without it getting upset or if it will even let me set a point manually to start a rotation. I didn't know the technical term since I am self-taught. I am currently looking for an older (affordable) version of Illustrator so I can work a bit more efficiently. Also, I am working on a pattern "traced" off of one of those pattern sheets from 1901 where there are 50 or so pattern pieces printed on one sheet. The lines from each piece are drawn in different forms using dots, dashes, squiggly lines, etc.
+Seasider48 Oh boy. Yeah that is definitely a prehistoric version of Photoshop (and you NEED Illustrator!) and wouldn't even know where to start. Try Craigslist (don't know what town you're in) but I can almost guarantee you can find an older (yet newer) version of Illustrator for dirt cheap since everything is moving to CC now. As long as you can get at least CS3 or CS4 (but I'm not totally sure they are compatible with XP?) it might work.
Yeah I will draft a patter first and then test it with the working pattern, which is done on pattern paper, once it's finalized and all kinks worked out, I transfer it to oak tag then I make it in the final fabric.
Sarah Todtman Hi, I add the seam allowances while I draft but I don't make much mention of it in my videos. This pattern you see here in this video I drafted from a photo of a pattern I had already made with seam allowances in it so they are included. Although sometimes when I draft I do leave seam allowances off if it's a difficult pattern, to make sure everything is right

Maybe Illustrator CC has options for a shape auto arrange. But just to be sure, I will look into it and see what I can figure out. If I find a solution, I will make a video for you. Thanks!
