I don’t care what anyone thinks or says, I use to love easing through the woods with a little 410 piping bushy tails. I learned to do it at a very young age, and learned to excel at it, just easing through the woods, napping when you felt like it. And now taking my kids and just watching them and teaching them, taking them to a small area and telling them not to cross certain areas and just letting them go a little while keeping a distance and watching them learn is something magical. And I’m dying to try Steve’s buffalo hot legs recipe.

Up here in BC Canada it's the Grey Squirrel that is destroying the range of the pine squirrel. Pine Squirrels are actually protected by law against hunting (but not trapping) but the Grey Squirrel that was introduced and considered invasive is hunt-able 365 days a year and no license required.

#unpopularopinon Red squirrels are 100% worthy targets! can't argue that it's a little hassle for the meat, there's more than enough to be worth it and its just as delicious as grey squirrels. They're also pretty challenging to hunt when they get into the tops of pine trees they all but disappear. Shot one under 5 yards with 20ga and still was enough meat.

I heard the old tale growing up about pineys harassing the fox squirrels, and when I came into some property it was perfect squirrell territory. However I didnt see a fox squirrel all season long, but it was abundant with pineys. The following season I harvested five or six pineys, and literally within a month I seen several fox squirrels cutting walnuts. Coincidence? It may be, but on more than one occasion I have drawn a red squirrel far out of the crotch of a tree by doing the mouse squeaker noise most guys do hunting for fox or coyotes. Give it a shot the next time you see one of those awnry red squirrels poking about. I feel like they are drawn to the noise to attack some young nesting fox squirrels when they hear it.
